According to my dad who used to make the ingredients in sunscream to see to the big companies soltan, hawian tropic, nivea, piz buin and ambro solaire are the best. Don't think you need to paid LOADS though, most of them are the same sort of thing. Am using Asda's own brand this year and dad said it was good.

TheBlonde · 02/07/2006 20:28

That last message was a bit illiterate. I have horrific strap marks this summer v.embarrasing!

poisson · 02/07/2006 20:39

Smurfgirl · 02/07/2006 20:40

I always get burnt on my scalp along my parting, had all my hair chopped off last week and had to ask nice girl at Toni and Guy to stop giving me a scalp massage because it hurt too much.

Back is worst place to get burnt IMO, v.painful to leaon on.

tassis · 02/07/2006 20:44

A recent Which report says the boots soltan range (which is massivley poplular) and various other cheaper ranges don't provide the SPF they claim

tassis · 02/07/2006 20:44

(as TheBlonde has already pointed out...)

Smurfgirl · 02/07/2006 20:46

The way they test all suncreams is flawed so none of them are really the spf they claim. They test them by putting the cream on the skin and then not rubbing it in which is v.unrealistic. I wonder whether the more epxeinsive companies up the spf because of this?? Ie a factor 15 nivea is not really a factor 15 its a 30 but they way we use it makes it a 15.

hoxtonchick · 02/07/2006 20:46

i have got v posh dr hauschka this year which is yum. no one's burnt yet.......

scienceteacher · 02/07/2006 21:09

SPF tests are regulated by COLIPA and carried out at independent labs. They involve applying a certain volume of product over a certain area of skin, rubbing it in, and observing redness after exposure to UV. There are only a few labs that carry out the tests, so different brands are tested at the same places according to the standard protocols.

The only flaw with the test is that the amount used is probably higher than the average consumer would think to use.

A large volume product, including Soltan, is fairly believable. Boots isn't going to risk cutting corners. The brands to worry about are the ones with a low volume, so anything that is not considered mass market. They may well take magazine formulations and not even bother to test them, especially if the brands are not TV-advertised. The tests are expensive, so it's only large volume brands that can afford them.

I always use P20 which is £20 and I havent burnt for 4 years after 20 years of burning even with the strongest sunblock on...so yes I would def say so..I tell everyone about P20 its is fab!!

dkdad · 03/07/2006 20:49

As I understand it, P20 is not recommended as it does not block any UVA. So, whilst you won't burn as the UVB is being blocked, the UVA is what can cause skin ageing, cancer etc.

Many/some people suffer reactions to P20 in the form of rashes. I´ve also heard it stains clothes.

Disclaimer: I can't back any of this up but I have heard it so many times now.

We're using Lavera this year - German, organic, kids like it.

JackieNo · 03/07/2006 20:52

But what do you use on your face? We've got the Piz Buin once a day factor 30 stuff, but it's quite greasy, and it makes my face feel really oily and sweaty. Am considering buying a separate facial one - anyone found one that's not too greasy?

poisson · 04/07/2006 09:21

hmthats hwy i was wondering abotu a branded one - like lancome or clarins

boredathome · 04/07/2006 18:03

dk dad ..I havn't heard that and you've got me worried now..I am sure it is better than the burning I used to experience though..will read up!!!

NomDePlume · 04/07/2006 18:33

I really like Vichy suncreams. They are fab. Ran out of Tesco & Nivea on holiday last year, bought Vichy in a local pharmacia. Fabulous. I have 2 kids (and a DH) with v sensitive skin, their spf60 sunblock milk for children is ace, no rashes etc from the cream yet it was strong enough to stop all of them from burning. I also got the spf60 sunblock stick (smells like refresher sweets) for easy application to faces etc and really handy and neat to keep in your handbag, fabbo. Haven't seen it in shops over here, but it's freely available over the net.

I really rate the Tesco Baby spf40 (5* UVA rating) in a tube too. Brill value.

poisson · 04/07/2006 18:34

No, because neither DS2, DD nor DH go brown. They are all fair skinned red-heads who just burn and blister. Lobster children aren't quite so fetching. DS1 who has olive colouring and dark hair goes brown at the merest hint of sun (like me), had factor 15 on.

I have decided spf in daily moisturiser is rubbish - moisturised face this morning - alas didn't apply it to the eye region - I now have burnt eye bags!!! How is this possible? I had shades on most of the day!!
