coconut oil - has this happened to anyone else?

I recently had a lot of split ends cut off and am trying to keep my hair in good condition now.
I put coconut oil on for a few hours the other night, and noticed quite a lot of hair coming out, not handfuls but more than usual.when shampooing it out. Hair once dry seemed to have lost a lot of shine and felt drier than it had.
I've just washed my hair again and even with the shower running over it it felt and looked like straw, just drying right back up iyswim.

So has anyone else had it do the complete opposite of what its supposed to? Or any tips to help it that do not cost a fortune or mean a trip to the hairdressers? I'm gutted, i'd heard such good things about using coconut oil and am worried that its now going to look even worse than when I didn't take care of it.
TIA

My hair does feel sort of rough after using it - I think it's something to do with the protein? But it has definitely made it stronger and shinier, maybe doesn't look great after the weekly treatment but in general with my usual shampoo and cond it looks glossy and healthy.

I'd persevere, maybe make sure you're washing it out properly and not scrubbing at your hair too much, might cause the hair coming out? Better to shampoo it (on wet hair) two or even three times gently, than to scrub at it. And always still condition it too.

Thank you for replying. I had said I would give it another go and then panicked tonight. I washed after it but only conditioned the ends so will try doing the whole head next time. Glad its not just mine feeling rough.
I didn't even realise it was meant to be weekly, should do my research properly in future.

I use it all the time and I don't have this problem either, but I would say to make sure that because you are putting oil in your hair you're not subconsciously over scrubbing with chemicals to get rid of oiliness! I tend to think that it works better with a natural or no silicone shampoo too, so maybe worth considering.

weaselwomble · 17/10/2013 00:50

Maybe I am overdoing the scrubbing, I am slowly trying to learn/change about things like this so could easily be that but wouldn't my hair have always felt rough then? If I've always done it too hard?
I don't mean to dismiss all the advice but I absolutely cannot afford shampoos like that atm, from the ones I've seen anyway. Thanks though, I will look into it when I have a bit more money to spend on myself.
Could it be because I've used the cheapest oil I could find do you think?

Try olive oil. My hairdresser said it works as good as any others.

Coconut oil helps hair retain protein. If your hair is strong already and protein resistant it will have this effect. I don't use it because my hair needs moisture not protein!
You need to use a very moisturising, protein free conditioner. Tresseme naturals are good (the smooth one).

I've had this happen to me. It's because you've got a build up of silicone on your hair. You need to use a clarifying shampoo to get it out. Next time you use the coconut oil it won't leave your hair all crispy and straw-like.

The body shop natural(ish) shampoo and conditioner are good and cheap, they always have deals on and it lasts forever. That's what I use.

Gliss do a silicone free shampoo & conditioner as do timotei. I've seen both in the pound shop if that helps.

I use this shampoo £4.19 from Boots - and the conditioner as well - they are silicone free and my hair feels lovely after using them. I also use the cheapest I could find coconut oil on my hair occasionally with good results.

Having done the research after confusing myself initially I followed these steps:

  1. Shampoo hair with old shampoo full of nasty chemicals (this washes out the silicone from standard conditioners).
  1. Condition with silicone free conditioner

All following hair washes - use silicone/SLS/sulfate free shampoo and conditioner (I LOVE the Naked range by boots - tried Tresemme and L'Oreal versions which were okay but not great - never tried any of the expensive brands - my hair is lovely now)

Then use coconut oil treatments whenever I can be bothered which is about once every other month applying the coconut oil to hair and then washing out with the silicone/SLS/sulfate free shampoo. I find I have to shampoo more than once and also try leaving the shampoo on for a minute or two rather than scrubbing or rinsing straight out.

Oh thank you for all the responses, I'm just on a break in the middle of a thirteen hour shift but I will respond properly tomorrow (and probably have a lot of questions). Thanks for all the advice

Ah I've had this similar problem, coconut oil turned my hair into a wire brush! Never thought about the silicones.
