Lindy Bop, Lady V, 1950s style dress for a winter wedding?

Dh is best man at a wedding in February. I want to look good. :) (Even though I will be entertaining the dc while dh 'best mans')

Do you think one of these 1950s style dresses would be suitable?

Something like this navy Hepburn dress

I'm 5foot 2, size 10, 30dd. I've got short dark pixie crop hair so I'm thinking of pinching a fascinator from my dsis. :)

Any thoughts? Confused

Lady v dresses are lovely but perhaps a bit thin for a winter wedding? Collectif are an online store who have some lovely velvet vintage style dresses.look at the delilah, helen and claudette.

It's lovely, but I agree you could be cold. Have a look at 20th century foxy - they do lovely dresses with nice fabrics, and some have sleeves. Their wrap circle dress (www.20thcenturyfoxy.com/en/vintage-style-dresses/1950s-wrap-circle-dress-black) is amazing on and warm - I have it in red and black! My sister is the same height as you and she's borrowed it, looks great on her.

Pinup - I'd prefer a full skirt rather than a wiggle/ pencil/ straighter style. :)

The wedding and reception are in the same venue - a fancy restaurant. So I'm not imagining it being chilly like in a church.
I do probably need a jacket/ wrap/ something. Confused

McFox - hmmm not sure about that one, maybe it's the sleeves or something but the picture doesn't do it for me.

I wasn't sure about it in the picture either but it's sooo much better on Smile

WhoNickedMyName · 15/10/2013 22:07

I've got a few lady v dresses, I'd wear this with a fake fur shrug/wrap type of thing.

starfishmummy · 15/10/2013 22:09

I wore a hepburn for a wedding last march - which I wore with a fine knit shrug - it was an informal wedding though. Interestingly the next wedding larty was waiting outside the register office and one of their guests had on a similar dress, also with a shrug!

MrsLettuce · 15/10/2013 22:18

Good plan! Petticoats are lovely and warm, with that and a wrap or shrug you'll be fine.

IME LadyV are a good bit better quality wise than LindyBop, they have some nice hepburn dresses ATM. THe cobolt is fab. But, TBH it's the petticoat that makes it.

Suddengeekgirl · 15/10/2013 22:20

Oh yes a furry shrug/ wrap sounds lovely! :)

What's the sizing like on Lady V?

OP posts:
WhoNickedMyName · 15/10/2013 22:23

I'm 5ft 2, 30e and a size 8 and I've found the Hepburn dresses true to size.

Suddengeekgirl · 15/10/2013 22:26

Or the Lindy Bop sizing too :)

Missed link McFox posted. That is an excellent dress indeed, I promise! Here in royal blue, here on a model.

Pretty damned pricey though Envy

MrsLettuce · 15/10/2013 22:29

yy ladyV more or less true to size, lindyBop often a bit big (and thin fabric)

MrsLettuce · 15/10/2013 22:31

I mean true / large to size as in compared the sizes stated (with measurements) on the sites, not compared to other brands.

MrsLettuce · 15/10/2013 22:31
Confused
Suddengeekgirl · 16/10/2013 07:36

Thanks mrslettuce! :)

I'd normally be put off by thin fabric but TBH I get very few opportunities to dress up so in all honesty the dress would hardly get worn.
Although if its super thin and shows all my lumpy bumps then that's not great. Confused

Did anyone buy their petticoat from Lindy Bop or did you get a much cheaper eBay one?

I have 20th Century Foxy 'Stop Staring Million Dollar Baby' Dress - it's fantastic quality.

I have ordered one dress from Lindy Bop in the past and found the fabric/ quality quite poor.

Pinupgirl · 16/10/2013 10:29

The Helen dress I recommended from Collectif is a full skirted dress op-it is gorgeous and I am seriously tempted to purchase it myself

But yes the Lady v dress with a faux fur coat or shrug and a petticoat-perhaps in a contrasting colour?-would be great. Vivien of Holloway are the best for petticoats-they are pricey but an investment piece.
