Dyed using home kits ( have done for years) but now I get black ends and the right colour at the roots ( naturally mid brown) yuck - what can I do ? Too poor to go to the salon ......

Ah yea olde root glow. You are going to have to strip the colour off with a prelightener. Don't leave it on too long- about 15-20 mins max until it turns a reddish brown then pop a warm brown over it (they don't turn black) but keep to a medium tone. This will guard against a green hue. Look for chocolate brown/chestnut(not any redder) or you will get dinner lady claret hair.

When you next come to dye your hair just do the roots and then run the colour through the rest for he last ten mins to refresh the colour.

Use a colour stripper like colour B4 ( about a tenner in Boots) but make you sure you rinse for absolutely bloody age until you use another other colour on it.

SteppedOnaFrog · 14/10/2013 18:04

The colorb4 stuff sounds good if you can hide for a fortnight until you can dye it again because after you have done it you can only use a level one (washes out in 6) dye. It isn't that effective for dye built up over time- you have to repeat it several times and then it will still be patchy and it often reoxidises even when you have followed the rinsing instructions to a tee.

Better to strip it but leave it on the shortest time possible.

I just bought three boxes for £12 perfect 10 hair dye in Tesco, special offer.

I am fed up of my hair going too dark and am going to give this a whirl as I haven't used this one before.

There was only a choice of three colours in tesco! light brown! medium brown and dark brown.

Not a lot of difference between the three, but hopefully they will be good.

cannotfuckingbelievethis · 16/10/2013 07:46

Oh dear Confused I obviously haven't been using the Colour B4 properly then as in the past I've stripped my colour on top. Just as well my hair is about the same length as Jessie J's!

hatchypom · 17/10/2013 20:03

Stage 1 complete....tricky to just do the roots as my hair's only bob length. But it certainly looks less black. Chestnut on and 10 mins to go

Sorry to hijack, but I've got another hair dying question...

For those that home dye their hair, how often do you do your entire head, rather than just the roots?

cannotfuckingbelievethis · 18/10/2013 00:00

Julie My hair is very short so the ends normally get done along with the roots.

When my Mum used to dye her hair (every 6-8 weeks) I think she did the roots then massaged the dye onto the ends for that last 10mins of the developing time if that makes sense. So her whole head got done but the ends were only dyed for 10 mins of that.
