Is it worth a trek to central London? Does Covent garden have bits I've failed to discover or is it all Gap and Next and Monsoon and Warehouse - in which case why bother?

when we lived in central London - in walking distance of Covent Garden and Oxford Street, we did most of our clothes shopping elsewhere!

TheBlonde · 30/06/2006 18:00

I prefer Kings Road and High St Ken myself
What shops are you after?
Cov Gdn has surferstyle shops, the birkenstock shop, an extra zara that just does shoes and bags

TheBlonde · 30/06/2006 18:02

this lists some possibly all the shops covgdn

thewomanwhothoughtshewasahat · 30/06/2006 18:21

thanks theblonde - that's useful. I live in Kingston, which has most of the standard chains, plus a couple of dept stores that do the posher stuff like Joseph and, erm, well, whatever posh stuff tehre is. It's all 5 minutes walk from my house, but just wondered whether it's worth spreading my wings. I have to but a holiday/summer wardrobe (have nothing at the moment - haven;t even got a pair of decent jeans) and am dreading it. I have reached a whole new stage in my relationship with fasion where I'm really not sure I can be bothered

Ah ... well, the next thing I was going to say was that after central London we moved to SW London and now we are perfectly happy cos we have Kingston to meet all our shopping needs. In my opinion, Kingston is way better than "town" - but then I hate clothes shopping!

foxinsocks · 30/06/2006 19:47

I find we tend to go to Kingston now. When we were in Hammersmith we ended up going a lot more to central London/Ken high street and sometimes Richmond/Kew retail but Kingston is so convenient and basically has everything you could ever need.

Posey · 30/06/2006 19:51

I find central London really knackering for a BIG shopping expedition. I don't know if the pavements are harder, the crowds of dawdlers are tiresome... I love it if I don't need/want much.
So for big clothes shopping I tend to wait til I visit the inlaws in Southampton which IMO is very hard to beat!

Yes I like the Kings Rd. Not so keen on High St Ken any more (I used to LOVE all the Amazons on Ken Church St)

There is a fantastic street thing let me find it

CountessDracula · 30/06/2006 19:53

here Click on the street you want then on an area of it and it tells you all the shops and has a pic of the st

thewomanwhothoughtshewasahat · 30/06/2006 22:56

think I might not bother then - especially if this heat keeps up.

give up rl shopping and buy online! much less taxing

thewomanwhothoughtshewasahat · 30/06/2006 23:01

tried it - got 3 different styles of trousers from Boden and none of them fit. and I;m off on holiday in a week. so really need to do it on foot - but in principle I agree

IMO you need something specific in mind to justify the trip, e.g. do you want Camper shoes, Agnes B., Nicole Farhi or Paul Smith - then you go to Covent Garden (not that I buy any of these, apart from Camper, as they go down to a size 35). But Kingston now has such a big range, it's hard to justify a trip in for just browsing.

What shape are you - some stores are better than others. I have found I'm too thick-waisted for Boden, but Jigsaw/Kew, Zara and H&M better. BTW H&M jeans are cheap and good if you have an "apple" shape like me! I bought a lot of my summer clothes this year from H&M (for which you might want to go to the bigger stores, Kingston store is a bit poorly stocked) and Kew - but I suspect my budget is lower than yours. White Stuff has great summer clothes (better than Fatface) - but you would need to go to Richmond for the store.
