Do you ever see something you like, it's relatively expensive...

You really want it and you can afford it easy enough but something stops you even though you love it. (shoe conversation this one!)

Yes!! Even though I 'know' it's irrational as I would wear it. And it would be false economy to look for cheaper alternatives. Is it the perceived risk factor? Habit? Whereas when I see something I kinda like and then notice it's reduced, I run to buy with a second thought. (And then never wear it)

feelinlucky · 11/10/2013 18:45

I often buy things that are way too expensive but I wear them to death and get value for money. I would rather have a few expensive things that make me feel really good than a load of cheap quality things I throw away after a few wears. In fact, I've just got my jumpers from the loft and washed them for the change in weather, also scarfs. I shouldn't need to buy any this winter and some of them I've had for years and they still look fab.

SundaySimmons · 11/10/2013 18:52

Yes. I have lots of urges to buy things I like. My finances have greatly decreased over the years and even though I can afford something I have to stop and weigh it up and not just automatically buy it as I used to do.

My son has left home but I still fork out a lot for him as he is in Uni and my daughter is 15 and lives with me, so once their needs are met (and our pets!), and the bills are paid, I have to think carefully whether I need to buy shoes/clothing/jewellery/perfume etc.

flipchart · 11/10/2013 18:56

To heck with it!!
I'm going to order what I wanted in March when I spotted them in Camden!

I don't know why I'm dithering so much!

I do this. Then it goes out of stock and I completely kick myself.

trixymalixy · 11/10/2013 19:00

And then I obsessively keep checking until it comes back into stock, then it does, I dither then it goes out of stock again.

HoleyCow · 11/10/2013 19:01

I think if you can afford it and you really like it and will wear it to death you should go for it. My more expensive buys are still hanging in my wardrobe long after the crap I buy has hit the bin - I know which makes me feel more guilty.

flipchart · 11/10/2013 19:02

OK debit card at the ready..... I may be gone for some time!!

I'm like this often and it's a legacy from the days when I was skinter than skint. I see a lovely bag and think "well, the money's in the bank now, but what if I'm really poor in 2 years' time?".

onepieceoflollipop · 11/10/2013 19:04

I do now, but it took me a long time to realise sometimes it is good to invest. Had my knee boots for 5 years (zips repaired/replaced). Got a boden skirt in its 4th year and worn several times a week.

flipchart · 11/10/2013 19:29

Hassled That is exactly it!!
Ilike to keep the joint account steady and not drop below £2,000 and I have loads of savings.
BUT about a decade ago we had money troubles and I never want to be in that situation again.
My bills are paid as soon as they come in so I'm comfortable. However it's like I'm teasing myself with these shoes!

Chubfuddler · 11/10/2013 19:32

You've got 2k in the current account and savings? And you're dithering about a pair of shoes?

Just buy them for gods sake

flipchart · 11/10/2013 19:57

I've ordered them!!

£149.00

I got some cheap imitation ones from Office for £30 months ago in the sale but it's not the same!

Link?!

BoffinMum · 11/10/2013 20:01

All the time. If you bought everything you fancied there would be no enjoyment left in the world.

I know they may be old hat to some of the really up to date fashion people here but they will be fine for where I live (i.e not the fashion centre of the universe, in fact not even the fashion centre of Lancashire!!)
