What do you think of these 'special effect' nail polishes?

I've been wandering in town today & was tempted by an O.P.I. polish in Boyes that sort of separated on your nails by the look of it to give a random effect, there's the nail caviar beads too & magnetic ones.

Just wondering if it's worth a play with them or I'm going to look like an overgrown teen Grin

Do you mean the OPI crackle effect? Poundlands across the country are full of them at the moment! Don't pay over the odds. Barry M and other cheaper brands also sell crackle top coats.

There are lots of effect polishes about at the moment - leather, feather, magnetic, confetti, colour change, caviar etc. I think if they're used in a more toned down way (eg. accent nails on hands of coordinating polish) then they can can look lovely. Over the top is a bit 15 year old girl! Caviar is tricky, you need a really good top coat to weld them on.

Yes! the crackle effect ones...I couldn't think of the word Confused

I'll have a look in the pound shops next time I go to town, never spotted any in them. I cba with the caviar stuff if it's going to be hard work....like to polish & go Grin

No of me, but I think they look fab on younger women or anyone that has a edgy look.

My daughter has al sorts of weird and whacky nail effects and they look fab.

She has done this before...

I used a Barry M magnetic one last Christmas party season. The 2 colours were shades/tones of each other that complimented my dress. A little tricky to get right as first as you had to apply it slightly thicker than standard polish and hold the magnet part close whilst still wet.

lucysmam · 11/10/2013 18:10

oooh, Sunday, they're pretty .....but I think maybe more a summer thing that I might be too old and uncool for

I'll have a look at youtube later on maybe & see what else is out there

You could do the marbling with dark colours. I bet it would look great with black, red and purple or blue.

FracturedViewOfLife · 11/10/2013 18:55

I don't like crackle nail varnish. The texture bothers me.
Magnetic nail varnish is nice, depends on the colour though.
Leather nail varnish felt horrible.
Caviar beads come off too easily. I've tried a few different types and none of them work with my top coats.
Marbling was fun and messy (felt like I was 5 again) but too much faff to do often.

I've just bought some caviar nail polish for my 6 year old in poundworld this afternoon.

NettoSuperstar · 11/10/2013 19:32

I love them and have loads, anything glittery is a pain to remove though.
I currently have on colour changing shellac.

I'm quite into my matte topcoat at the moment, feels a bit interesting without being too alarming.

FracturedViewOfLife · 11/10/2013 19:54

Ooo I liked matte varnish too. I really liked doing my nails all one colour, then putting french tip stickers on and going over them with matt top coat so I got this effect black or purple

FracturedViewOfLife · 11/10/2013 19:55

link fail - Purple

lucysmam · 11/10/2013 20:00

oooh, they look good too!

*so long as no-one is going to mistake me for an overgrown teen I think I'm convinced to get a few new polishes and have a play around with them Grin

Love the magnetic ones. Tried the caviar, but I agree with the other comments that it doesn't stay on for long, so special occasions only.

I went through a phase last winter of experimenting with glitter/confetti topcoats over a variety of colours. Looked fantastic - the best was a beige/grey base with black and white confetti topcoat. But boy do you need a chisel to get the damned stuff off again.

kiwik · 12/10/2013 11:05

I tried the caviar nails, but was shedding tiny wee balls all day, as the top coat just didn't keep them in place well enough.
I like matte top coat, especially over some darker colours.
I tried a magnetic Barry M polish, which was ok. Ditto the gelly polish, but wasn't really impressed.

I like my nails to be short and plain really, although do like to experiment with colour a lot. I do change at least once a week if not more.

SteppedOnaFrog · 12/10/2013 11:10

Fine for teenagers.

Aquelven · 12/10/2013 12:22

Some of them are a nightmare to remove, especially the ones with sparkly bits in them.

70isaLimitNotaTarget · 12/10/2013 17:50

My DD has several-
beads
magnetic
crackle
glitter

she did nail painting for her end of year fund raiser so we did loads (about 60) demonstration nails (false nails on skewers, painted)

Out of all of them, the magnetic one was nicest.
And the glitter ones are a pain to remove.
(Remembering NYE a couple of years back with OPI "Rainbow Connection" from "The Muppets Collection" )

Hotcross pound lands have OPI in them? Shock
