Dithering about Botox. Cancelled twice. Help me make my mind up!!

Right, so at 39 my 11s are starting to be quite evident. Not deep but present when my face is relaxed. And I'd like to age "naturally" (i.e. never look like I have had anything done), but much more slowly than I am doing. Some of it that I have finally lot weight, sorted out my skin, got my colours done, and I would just like to look my absolute best now...

So I keep booking Botox, and I keep chickening out..

  1. Will I look obviously Botoxed?
  2. Will it feel funny when I try and frown?
  3. Am I starting too early?
  4. Is it worth the money?
  5. Is it morally and ethically defensible?
  6. Will my husband notice?

I have asked few of these questions on here a few years ago when it was just a distant pipe dream, but I'm going round in circles now....

People are always shocked when I tell them I have had it as I can still move my forehead but maybe I don't have enough I certainly am not totally smooth or shiny

i've had my frown lines botoxed once, about 8 years ago, i'm now 38, so in response to your questions, from my own experience:

  1. Will I look obviously Botoxed? no
  2. Will it feel funny when I try and frown? yes, it felt so funny, like someone had their finger pressing lightly on my head between my eyebrows stopping the 11 happening
  3. Am I starting too early? this doesn't need to be the start of a lifelong committment, just try it
  4. Is it worth the money? in my view yes, but it really depends how bothered by the 11s you are, and how much money you have
  5. Is it morally and ethically defensible? unless you're pregnant, then its your body, do what you want
  6. Will my husband notice? mine didn't... even after i pointed it out to him

i should add, that i do think if you go for the full face-freeze it looks obvious, but if you're literally having your frown lines done.. no one will notice.

Lazy its not a moral objection to vanity. Im vain and want to look young and beautiful lol!. I personally just think botox looks un natural on those I have known to have had it done and those ladies who I can see have had it done. They start off with a little and then their perception seems to go and it gets worse and worse and you just want to tell them "Stop"!!.

I have pics on my profile admittedly when it has virtually worn off as I have just had it redone Do I look weird?

Yes obvious botox looks unnatural

Not all botox is obvious

Therefore not all botox looks unnatural

That is undisputably a logical argument!

But I do worry about the physical side of things with Botox. There are a lot of valid negatives regarding the use of Botox. It can cause muscle wastage in other parts of the face and even other parts of the body, brain problems, and sagging and drooping of the face permanently. These are just some of the problems so for me the risk is just not worth it.

There is a teacher at my daughters school. She looks great. Well groomed and an unlined face which when you are sat with her talking seems perfectly normal. Until she laughs, then she looks very odd because the upper half of her face does not move.

This lack of animation is not really noticeable when she is just talking but as soon as she laughs she takes on an almost maniacal look.

She has had Botox for a long time as we got into a conversation about it when I mentioned I mentioned my availability for a future appointment clashed with my Botox appointment!

noddy you look great but cannot tell from these photos anything about your lines or lack of as the photos are way too small. Sorry. But you do look lovely anyway.

I had it done and it only lasted 3 months not six. It's not cheap but the amount divided by six seemed manageable but when I had it in May and the result was gone by August, I was disappointed tbh. I have no plans to have it re-done, although I was thrilled initially. If it had actually lasted six months I might feel differently but I can't get locked in to that kind of expense. I tried it though. Happy to have tried it once.

I do think a tiny bit =defintiely makes me look less knackered. Can't find any pics with make up but really thats when I think it really helps if you are older as it doesn't settle in teh cracks!

wrt q5, I don't spend money on moisturisers or pampering or make up or perfume. lidl moisturiser, rimmel, eau de fresh air for me. so that side of things was not a moral dilemma for me at all. but I understand where you are coming from.

Botox has been around for ages and is considered to be a very safe and well tested product. Yes, some people may have adverse effects, but that is true with anything. The only way to weigh up the pros and cons for you, is to make an appointment with a dermatologist and discuss it. Once the actual risks as they pertain to you have been set out, then you can decide whether it is worth it or not.

I think that a good and long term relationship with a good and sensible dermatologist is key to not looking like a complete tit as the years go by. Trying to freeze your age at, e.g. 35 is going to look increasingly daft as the years go by. Better to aim to look a few years younger, or a bit more rested - goals that take into account your overall ageing process and how your skin changes. A good dermatologist should be able to guide you.

I think of it like getting your highlights done - you start off with honey blonde and it looks fab, but then this becomes the new normal and you stop noticing what's actually been done, and it's tempting to go blonder and blonder. A good colourist will rein you in.

You don't automatically end up with parts of your face frozen. It's a paralysing agent, so if you inject less, you will end up with partial paralysis and, therefore, still some movement. My dermatologist offers a free 2-week top up - that way you can inject less initially and if you find you want a bit more, then you can go back. Easier to get a more subtle result that way.

I'd say go for it, but choose where you go wisely. If you want recommendations there are loads of people here from all over the country who can help. If you don't like it, it'll wear off and you don't need to do it again.

Just following up on question 5, I have a good and thorough skin care regime (not uber-expensive brands), but I don;t ever bother with professional facials. So I 'save' on that.

I have it - just in frown lines so do have movement in my forhead. It just makes me look less tired really.

There is a massive difference between just having your frown lines done and having a totally immobile face and good practitioners really don't like to do the latter.
