if you're early 30's and it's been so long you worry about accidentally joining frumpsville?

Never buy something because of the label. Rule 1.

TripTrapTripTrapOverTheBridge · 08/10/2013 22:02

Try looking for styles that you like online, then look for similar clothes in the shops. Try topshop, asos, grazia etc.

mewkins · 08/10/2013 22:13

Tk maxx great but you have to trawl rather than just go for a label as they have very limited ranges from each label. They often stock French Connection, Reiss, Great Plains, Ralph Lauren, lots of denim brands etc. I tend to buy a bit of knitwear and like Clements Rebeiro and Deane and White merino. But if you have a spare hour you can just browse through the thousands of things online and see which things you like the look of.

omuwalamulungi · 08/10/2013 22:17

They always have Cynthia Rowley. She designs beautiful, flattering clothes and they're grown up without being boring.

Hope this helps!

hortensemancini · 08/10/2013 22:36

I am currently stalking the scarf section for more Becksondersgaard scarves. They also have Elle McPherson undies fairly regularly, and some good US puffa winter jackets.

Corygal · 08/10/2013 23:07

Good 7FAM in at the mo, as well as Nicole Farhi, Theory and some good American jersey dresses.

I check out what labels TK has got, then look at those brands on Net a Porter or similar, and trot back to the shop to get the nicest styles I've seen online. For a quarter of the price, natch.

Have also found a fair bit if Orla Kiely bedding and North Face attire

Specialbrew · 09/10/2013 07:08

The stock changes so much it's difficult to say what to look for. As an earlier poster said, they always seem to have clothes by Reiss, FC, Diesel etc.

I tend to go for quality basics from contemporary designers that I can't afford at full price. In natural fibres, like cotton, wool and cashmere. I find that TKMaxx have much more of this stuff than your average high street store. In the last year I've bought BLK DNM jeans and tops, James Pearse and Vince tops and Hudson boyfriend jeans. I've also bought Bloch ballet flats and Supergra pumps. In summer I buy Roxy and O'Neill bikinis, in winter I look at men's sweaters. I bought a lovely Nigel Hall jumper a couple of months ago.

I've bought a few 'non' brands, but as another poster up thread said, I tend to buy these when I know they are really 'me.' And whatever brand, I only buy things I LOVE and know I would wear the next day if I bought. It can be tempting to buy something just 'cause it looks like a bargain!

Good luck, come back and tell us what you bought!

hortensemancini · 09/10/2013 09:50

I have to say that 50% of the time, when I spot a 'label' in TKM it's pretty apparent why it's languishing in there, and not in the wardrobe of a happy full-price customer. Even famous lines have some clunkers every season. I've had to train myself to look at the clothing, not at the label - but in general, I'd rather get cheap cashmere/gym kit/warm cardigans discounted at TKM than from Tesco.

My local branch never seems to get particularly amazing clothes but it's more reliable for decent beauty brands like OPI, TiGi, Decleor, Nioxin, Essie, Sebastian, etc, and Osprey purses and bags.

Does QVC offload into TKMaxx, by the way? I've noticed a few Tiana B dresses in there recently, as well as Dennis Basso coats

teta · 09/10/2013 09:59

I'm only 5ft 3 so most English coats don't look right on me.TK,s often have Spanish/Italian brands in that are better cut.I used to wear Maxmara or Marella now I try on loads of coats to find the best Fit.Down coats are Also good buys as are Boots,Cashmere and Ralph Lauren denim paper and supply jeans and shorts.I don't look for specific labels but just for things that are me.Recent buys have included denim blue ankle boots by Ecco and a navy down coat by Laundry by Shelli Segal. These are not brands I was familiar with before.

TripTrapTripTrapOverTheBridge · 09/10/2013 10:24

Just doing a bit of online shopping at the mo and currently have a couple of Fen Wright Manson cardies in my basket and deciding on a clements rebeiro and three pairs of boots LOL

I have had so much good stuff from TKMaxx lately.

Like others say I don't really look at the designers, but our store has started creaming the best stuff off onto a separate rail, called Contemporary Minimalism or something like that so I just head straight there.

My favourites have been Made in Heaven Jeans and a Chinti & Parka cardigan. I disagree with what Hortensmancini says. I have had stuff from there that is still available full price.

Also worth looking at is Levis Made and Crafted and Theory.

I do like a good rummage though so for me that's half the fun.

hortensemancini · 09/10/2013 11:43

My local TKMaxx is a bit of a backwaters branch - either someone canny on the staff spirits away any good stuff before it hits the shop floor, or head office just don't bother sending anything particularly current or high end. There are three rails of waterproof parkas and only one small jeans section...

OrangeOpalFruit · 09/10/2013 12:05

Some of the items with non brand labels are actually very good quality. I think they've probably been rebranded for sale. I've got some gorgeous suede brogues that I've had for about 4 years and they still look good. Cheap looking insole in them but no way are they cheap shoes, although they didn't cost me a lot.

AmberNectarine · 09/10/2013 12:17

I've had some fantastic stuff from there - a black wool/cashmere Calvin Klein coat sub £100, a navy Vivienne Westwood Red Label skirt for £30, a cute polka dot Moschino skirt for £20.

The other day I bought a great slinky top by Feel The Piece, which isn't a well known label but is stocked in Donna Ida and Trilogy. I was really pleased as I love the stuff but draw the line at spending £100+ on a jersey top!

Suburban · 09/10/2013 12:19

That's a shame hortense. Ours used to be dreadful. They've just done it up and seem to be getting better stock now. It helps that i can go at 9 on a weekday as well (little baby).

BanoffeeSplitz · 09/10/2013 22:52

Just recently I've bought a couple of long sleeved t-shirts / underlayers from a brand I'd never heard of, called Charli. Really nice stretchy viscose / cotton / cashmere mixes.

I always look for Falke & Wolford tights - in my local one there are decent Falke opaques fairly often, but the Wolford ones are always completely bonkers designs. (I've had better luck with Wolfords in the sales at a local department store).

Otherwise I just mainly look for gym kit - Calmia & Manuka are good. And am training myself to spot natural fibres as I run along the rails (also good practice for charity shopping Wink)

PrimalLass · 10/10/2013 12:57

The Edinburgh Craigleith one had Merrell Haven coats last week. And a couple of All Saints bits.
