I am rennovating my house at the moment, just decorated our bedroom - cream walls, pine furniture (with the black hinges), cream and gold quilt and Ive just added black accessories - it looks absolutely stunning.

Don't know if I have the courage to do black in the lounge, it is very far from my normal taste.

So, whats your opinion, does it look sophisticated and smart or just too cold and unhomely - design tips really wanted - any ideas, I think I'm going to do it, just need convincing

go for it, i once painted my living room blood red, it was lovely. it depends on what the room is like really

i have seen some fab papers white and black

Using black is fine as long as the room is big enought to accomodate it and very light (if you want it as a main colour) if its just an accent colour then I can see no reason why you shouldn't use it.

room is about 20ft long by 14ft, was thinking of cream walls, cream sofa, with black curtains and bits also would love to find so black patterned wallpaper of some sore for the chimney breast - I really do want the wow factor

that didn't take long - i'm convinced already
Love to hear ideas though - prefer to go black/cream than black/white

Yes I agree black/cream, for the chimmney breast I would suggest some of that lovely black/cream wall paper you can get in floral patterns cream back ground with big black flower shapes on really lovely but you have to be dead set on black to get it iyswim. I think they do some where the black is actually a velvety material I know its a step further but if it is just the black curtains and that bit of wall then I think you could get away with it.

Keep us posted.

Golds, in Grazia this week is a style feature about Pearl Lowe's house and she uses lots of black and it's beautiful. Have a look.

We have our bedroom decorated black and cream too. Cream and black bed linen (folk embroidery from Next), cream walls, black iron bedstead, black curtains and lots of cream and black accessories. Have lots of black and white framed prints up and I find the lack of colour in this scheme really soothing and relaxing. I think it would be lovely for a lounge too - very chic and not unhomely if plenty of cushions and other soft furnishings - Next have a lovely black astrakan cushion and a black/cream flocked one.

Ds's room is painted gloss black on 2 walls - but then it was originally my study & I had wanted a black bedroom since my teens, so indulged myself!

Now covered with lots of glowstars, spaceships etc. Doesn't look cold/dark at all - gloss reflects light. Matt black might be a bit gloomy, depends on the room, really.
