Breastfeeding wardrobe - non-breastfeeding clothes!

I have always been stylistically challenged, but have spent most of this year both pregnant and broke, so have forgotten what little I knew about buying clothes. Now I am breastfeeding dc2, not quite so broke, and in dire need of a new wardrobe.

I'm planning for this to be our last dc, so don't want to invest in proper breastfeeding clothes. I have worked out the mechanics of breastfeeding clothes, and happy with both "2 top" variants (i.e. button-down over-top with vest underneath to pull up, or loose over-top with vest underneath to pull down), and have been winging it with crappy old T shirts and badly fitting maternity dresses, but would like to feel a little bit more put together.

Style-wise I am happiest in jeans plus nice tops, maybe the odd jersey dress and leggings. Budget-wise I can probably afford Oasis/ Fat Face prices at the top end, more like H&M if I'm buying a lot.

Can anyone advise on what I should be hunting for generally, or any specific items?

Thanks

Hey duck, I'm in a similar position - breastfeeding, two tops approach is fine, will look for a job in the new year so not looking to spend a fortune for what will only really be few months wear.

In terms of what to look for I like an old white stuff button through (short) dress with leggings and an old wrap across boobs jane norman long line top - both approaches allow boob access. Both are very old, and I can't see similar in the shops at the moment (or I would buy)

I will lurk with interest and hope someone knowledgable will be along to help!

I admit I have not yet experienced breastfeeding but I've been trying to find maternity clothes that are non maternity and will also suit breastfeeding (and post-breastfeeding wear)... these are some of the outfits I've been considering:

  • Comfy dark blue or black skinny jeans or jeggings (M&S jeggings or GAP?), with a longline vest top or tshirt (New Look or H&M) and a check shirt worn loose or buttoned up (ASOS have a few or H&M).
  • Smock style dress with a loose or buttoned down neckline (plenty on ASOS at the moment) - perhaps with a thin vest top under (Primark have good stretch thin vest tops).
  • Longline vest top with a loose kimono style print jacket or a patterned loose cardie (Topshop / DPs have these) over with skinny jeans or thick leggings.
  • Stretch skinny jeans in a bright colour (blue or red perhaps - or a berry red/burgundy would be nice for autumn/winter - good ones in ASOS own brand or GAP) - with a loose camisole (New Look) and a grey marl/navy/dark grey jersey blazer (Uniqlo) - plus a nice scarf?

Just some ideas anyway, HTH :)

Get a couple of pairs of jeans - one blue, one black. The black jeans can be dressed up if you are going out somewhere. Add some coloured vests and a neutral cardigan. Do you want to look smart all the time or do you want to be more comfy/practical? If you want to be comfy I would get a parka and some stompy boots, if you want to look smart I would get a wool coat and some lace-up ankle boots.

Wrap dresses are ok for feeding in but I found button things were awkward. The two-tops approach is definitely the way forward. Leggings and long vests/jumpers are best immediately post partum as you don't want anything too constricting.

Thank you all for replies, v helpful! I'd love to think i'll go smart all the time, but knowing myself i'll end up mostly casual. I'll have a browse of the sites suggested and try and put together a full wardrobe. Excited!
