How to 'go grey' (or at least natural) with the least misery?!

I am fed up with the constant upkeep of my hair. Naturally a light reddish brown I have a grey streak at the front and I suspect quite a few others!
No matter what colour is used (by hairdresser) it fades fast and of course 3 weeks later I have roots anyway.

I have decided enough is enough and I actually want to have my own hair colour, no matter what it may be. I have long hair at the mo, kept it (after advice here :)) but am still rather itching to lop off a good 6-8 inches.

So.. has anyone just let theirs grow out? I don't want to blend it with highlights..I can do that if in the end the grey is too much for me, but I need tips on surviving the badger stripe that is about to appear!

There is a product called roux which some use to get them through. Others just bung a hat on or pull their hair back and just let the dyed colour fade and their own colour just grow in.

I'm going cold turkey at the moment and just braving it out. My hair is a really resistant gray and I am so with you on the ridiculous rigmarole involved in attempting to keep on top of it.

Check out GGG- going gray guide facebook for inspiration.

The gray cafe (link through going gray looking great) is a forum with lots of suggestions from getting through the skunk stage to what colours work and general support.

I had dirty blonde hair. I've just let it my natural platinum (grey) grow out. I haven't coloured my hair for over a year. My fringe is a lovely silver. I get my hair trimmed every 5 weeks and I wash and condition every day. Twice a week I use a purple toner shampoo to stop my hair looking too yellow and brassy.

I'm glad to be free of the tyranny of highlighting and roots, and I save myself £70 every 6 weeks!

I've been colouring at home for years (mid-brown) and am in the process of going grey. Actually it's a very light white/silver all over already, at 48. I've managed around 3-4 months going cold-turkey but it's just too stripey now and today I'm going to the hairdressers for a disguising treatment hopefully! If yours is not too light it might be ok, I think it's a question of giving it a go and seeing how it seems.
Let us know how you go on!

Hmm, not sure I made a good move! The DC sniggered Blush Sad.

Hairdresser bleached the ends then put on an all-over semi-permanent colour. There's no stripe now, but the overall effect is a little strange I have to admit.

Already wondering if going grey was a good idea. Confused

God I'm no help.

I had 2 long white strands (well sections) of hair down the side (roots) at front of hairline. It was almost witchlike and almost appeared overnight. as soon as I saw this I panicked majorly and off to hair colourist! Grin

I was almost crying saying to my mum on the phone "why am I going grey now at 39?!" as my mum didn't go grey (cow) until her 40's at least and dark brown hair!

My colourist at first coloured and then highlighted over or through - so base first etc... then they wouldn't do it. I have highlights now but the occasional white hair.... and I did panic a lot but now I CBA.

will keep an eye on it for now....

It's a long slog, I must say. I've been growing out my dye for nearly a year now (at the tender age of 37, oh the horror) and only have a few centimetres left of the evil dye...but the resulting white streaks at the front have been definitely worth it, I LOVE it (much more than the deeply unsatisfactory home dye jobs and the outrageously time consuming and expensive salon ones Grin)

Anyway, I just braved it out, didn't use any root cover ups or hats etc - it really wasn't that bad once the roots were past the 'god, you've let yourself go' stage!

There are a couple of great blogs with going gray advice - howbourgeois.blogspot.co.uk/p/its-gray-hair-party.html?m=1 She is utterly beautiful and her hair looks gorgeous.
Also, Highland Fashionista has got some good tips and also looks great with her silver.

It's just a change in hair colour, but some people seem to see it as some sort of bizarre death knell..."my life is over!" etc. No. It's just gray hair, in the kindest way possible, they need to get a grip Smile

Anyway, good luck - if men can be silver foxes, can we not at least try for silver vixen status?! Grin
