I am wearing my first underwired bra

I went to Debenhams yesterday and they fitted me in this in a 38GG. I have been wearing a 36K Royce nursing bra but know that the Gorgeous range are small in the back so a 38 would be right for that. I did all the scooping and there is no quad boobage happening so I don't think that the cup is too small. I'm not sure how much is a fit/style issue and how much is me not being used to wires but they seem to come up high on the side, they are in my armpit. The fitter suggested that I stick to full cup styles rather than balcony or plunge. Should I persevere with it in the hope that I get used to wires sticking in my armpit or do I need a different bra?

is the wires actually poking you or is it just that the side of the bra is higher than you are used to? What shape are your boobs-full on top or bottom, close or wide set, wide or narrow root etc. and is the wire definitely outside of your breast tissue?

RubberBullets · 06/10/2013 15:57

Full on bottom, wide root I think, there is about 1cm approx between them at the closest point, is that what you mean by close or wide set? I'm pretty sure all the tissue is enclosed, the wire at the side is right in the middle of my side IYSWIM and ends 1-2 cm from the centre of my armpit

It could just be that particular bra then rather than size. Personally, I buy bras and give them a longer try on at home with the tags still on. I've had too many that seem ok in store and turned out not to suit.

I'm not sure why she recommended avoiding plunge and balconette though, did she explain? I'm a bit wary as that seems to be something that not great fitters say when faced with big boobs - they assume a full hammock is required Wink. Full on bottom doesn't entirely rule and style out - the biggest issue is moulded t-shirt bras like the Freya Deco as they can fit on the bottom, but gape on the top. But ruling out such a big range of shapes doesn't suggest she was all that good to be honest.

IME, Freya are quite good for wide root as are some Bravissimo own brand bras. Panache and Cleo not so much, and Curvy Kate a bit hit and miss. With 1cm gap you will probably not have too many problems from a closeness point of view - the most problematic is those of us who have bugger all gap and still have to get a wire in the middle.

I have to say I was a little concerned when she first brought a 38FF t shirt bra to determine the size. I had said that my best fitting bra was a 36K, she said that I measured a 42 but would bring something smaller.

The reason she gave to avoid balcony was because the band goes straight across at the front which I thought was weird.

The gorgeous range do come up high under the armpits.

PourquoiPas · 06/10/2013 19:09

Sounds like the bra is too big in the band so the cups go too far round your body. Did you try a 36 and it was too small?

A lot of bras have weird shapes as they get to larger cup sizes, I am a 36k in bf bras and find that some ranges just don't suit my body shape. The Alana bra at bravissimo is a fab shape - perhaps try them?

StatisticallyChallenged · 06/10/2013 19:46

She sounds useless, sorry! That makes zero sense as a reason.

I was actually thinking the Alana is often good for full on bottom, as is the Dotty Spot. Also possibly the Cleo Juna (which is wider than the other cleos) and I would maybe try some freyas although they aren't as sturdy as the Bravissimo branded ones.

RubberBullets · 06/10/2013 20:22

When I was fitted in my 36K Royce in Bravissimo they did fit me in an Alana too. I didn't like how pointy it made me look though.

It is hard as there isn't anywhere decent near me that sells bras, our Debenhams is really small and I had to travel out of county to get to a decent sized one. I should have asked Sorrel to meet me there as it was her local one :)

Apart from pointy, did the Alana fit comfort/style wise (it is a little retro shaped I agree!)

Just thinking if we know your fit in that we can maybe work from there

It was back in May and I didn't buy so can't remember for sure. I think it was either a 36H or 38H and I don't remember it being uncomfortable but then when I was in Debenhams the Gorgeous one felt comfy, it only started to dig in at home.

Ooh, I would have met you! Anything to boss help someone out.

Actually thinking about it, I think the straps seemed quite far apart on that one, whereas they are a bit closer to my neck with the Gorgeous one and I prefer that. I like the straps halfway between my shoulder and neck
