What the heck is going on with my hair?

It's just below collar length.
Haven't used a dye for about 6 weeks/

I don't use styling products or heat products.
But in the last week it seems to be coming out at a rate of knots.

When I wasjh it (maybe every 5 days) there's a plughole full. When I run my hands through there's a huge clump of loose hair Sad

And now, to cap it all off, the back of my scalp if really scabby.
Not itchy, more lumpy dry scaley areas

(There's psoriasis in the family could be that?)

Sad nobody cares

I'm going to have to brave the hairdresser scissors and have it cut.

But then I have to deal with my scabby scalp first. Hmm

Coming out in handfuls with a scabby scalp? Sounds like you need a trip to the GP.

MotherBluestocking · 06/10/2013 12:23

It does sound as though psoriasis is a possibility. Are the scabby bits weepy?
I have suffered from a similar condition on two occasions. The first time it was sorted with some fairly mega-steroids (eek), the second time I saw a homeopath, which - despite my innate scepticism - proved successful.

Maybe Psoriasis or perhaps an allergy to something you're using on your hair... Maybe the ingredients have changed in one of your products. My hair has been falling out badly too (my hairdresser commented on it). I literally pulls loads out out of the hole after a shower... :( I plan on asking my doctor. I think you should book an appt. too... In the meantime, I would try something like Simple shampoo...no fragrance in that.

My hair loss was due to Vit D deficiency. worth a bloody test maybe?

Thanks

I'll have a good look at the old diet .
I've started taking multi vits within the last 2 weeks (but these are iron and B Vits mainly)

I haven't used anything new within the past 6 weeks.

But: could it be hormonal?
I didn't lose any hair after DC were born.
I've just had AF after a 2+ month gap (possibly perimenopausal) ?
Maybe I'm just losing alot at once because it's all got to it's fallout phase at once (clutches @ straws)

The scalp - I have had a flakey scalp in areas for the past 20 years but it's only a small patch when my hair needs washed. This isn't weepy or itchy, just really bumpy and rough.

I'll need to get DH to photograph my head so that I'll have evidence for the GP , in case they see me on a good hair day.

My hair loss was due to near non existent oestrogen level. Maybe you need a boost. It's definitely worth having a blood test to rule it out.
I've also suffered from an irritated psoriasis type scalp but over time have found that using SLS free shampoos and conditioners without silicones and parabens really help. I don't use styling products as they are usually full of scalp irritants too. I hope you find out what it soon.

Good luck with your GP. I would try and wash a little more often than every 5 days once you find a shampoo that doesn't aggravate your scalp or one that is suitable for psoriasis (if that is what you have). Ask your GP to test you for hormones, vitamin D, ferritin levels. The iron and B vitamins are a good idea.

I have seen a simple home made hair mask recommend for dry scalps and lifeless hair. It is simply mixing together egg yolk and olive oil. Put it on all over for half an hour before washing your hair and do it for a month. :)
