Seriously oily skin

I've always had oily skin. When I was pregnant it turned into lovely balanced skin, not oily, not dry just lovely.

DD is now 8 week and my skin is more oily than ever. If I wash it in the morning, don't moisturise, it FEELS so greasy by 3pm at the latest.

Things are slightly complicated by the fact I also have seborrheic dermatitis on my face so can't use anything too harsh.

I'm currently using Eve lom but it's too rich, as is Liz Earle. Was thinking of trying elemis but not sure which products.

Any ideas? I don't really have a budget. I live in Ireland and don't have a super drug (mentioning as I've seen super drugs vit e cleanser mentioned but I can't get it)

Google Thalgo ultra matte, I found positive reviews

have you tried OCM (Oil CLeansing Method)?
You'd want the top % of caster oil - probably 30%, and experiment with the base oil.

details here

It's not fancy, it's not in a flash bottle, it's cheap and it works.

this works for me:

I've always had very oily skin too. I've started using cetaphil face cleanser in the mornings. My skin is less oily and looks better since using it. I use a hot cloth cleanser in the evenings as the cetaphil wasn't that great at removing make up. I also use clarins face treatment oil for oily/combination skin most evenings and that has helped too.

Dirtydiana · 04/10/2013 16:23

Btw the cetaphil is very very gentle on the skin.

hermioneweasley · 04/10/2013 17:07

Oil cleansing method and a mattifying primer. Just tried Superdrug's make up academy one and it was very good and cheap.

HelgatheHairy · 04/10/2013 17:10

Haven't tried ocm - to be honest it seems a bit messy!

I've tried Dr hauschka. Can't remember what I thought of it but I stopped using it so mustn't have liked it that much!

I've seen cetaphil in boots - might give that a go.

Put milk of magnesia on before your make up but after an oil free moisturiser ( I use a Neutrogena one, about £5 in Boots). If you do a google search you'll find loads of reviews on Milk of Magnesia as a primer. It's been working really well for me.

BeCool · 04/10/2013 20:17

its not messy. oil onto hand, massage onto skin, hot flannel off. no mess

PomCareBear · 04/10/2013 20:32

Not moisturising is not going to help.

Your skin will produce more oil through the day if you haven't used a light moisturiser. Cetaphil does a moisturiser too.

sedgieloo · 04/10/2013 20:49

I'm the same. The only thing that made my skin the same as in pregnancy (normal) was continuous use of the pill specifically Yasmin. My hair wasn't greasy either. As soon as I stop bf I'm on it again.

VenusDeWillendorf · 05/10/2013 00:18

I found the Cetaphil cleanser is very gloppy and not very good for oily skin, UNLESS you can find the one for oily skin.
Iirc the one in Ireland was just for dry / normal and gave me masses of pebble dashing breakouts- you know those ones, they never erupt, but are just blocked pores and take ages to clear again.

I use a product by sebamed called face and body wash: it's great as its ph neutral so suits sensitive skin, and it seems to hold the oil back.

Have you thought of going on the pill, to get your lovely skin back! I was the same when pregnant, my skin and hair was amazing, but after a month or two after birthing my hair was lank and falling out, and I had oil slicks and horrible spots.... On top of all the other attractive features, saggy and flabby! Not what you expect!

VenusDeWillendorf · 05/10/2013 00:20

X post sedgieloo! The pill is great isn't it?
Is Yasmin the one with anti androgenic effect? Or is that just dianette?

Poodlehorse · 05/10/2013 08:32

I am sure Caroline Hirons always says oil for oil and I worship at her feet as her advice has got my skin not just improved but properly normal for the first time in 25 years.

sedgieloo · 05/10/2013 18:37

Venus - yes I believe so. I'm pretty sure that the type of progesterone is unique to that pill ot it may be oestrogen I forget which now. I lost weight too!! It was my silver bullet haha. I've been pregnant or bf for 4 yrs and I really look forward to be back on it.

HelgatheHairy · 05/10/2013 19:59

I'm breastfeeding at the moment so don't want to go on the pill. I can't take Yasmin anyway - I was on it for a while and
I turned into a neurotic, paranoid, irrational, crazy woman on it! Was on yasminelle after that.

Didn't notice any major improvement in my skin/hair on either pill to be honest.

venus I just bought the cetaphil today - you're right it's for dry sensitive skin. I didn't realise there is a version for oily skin. I'll use it as I have it but the search goes on.

I would personally recommend a gentle non-comedogenic cleanser. Non- comedogenic to ensure it does not clog your pores, and gentle because harsh cleansers will strip your skin of all its natural - as well as excess - oils, which will cause your skin to go into overdrive trying to re-balance itself by producing lots more oil (a self defeating strategy.)

Avene Extremely Gentle Cleanser might be good to try, as might Cetaphil. La Roche Posay also make non-comedogenic cleansers suitable for sensitive skin (and believe it or not, oily, break-out prone skin is sensitive by its very nature and needs to be treated as such.)

Then you will need to use a light, non-comedogenic moisturiser. As a poster upthread said, not moisturising is - again - a self defeating strategy as your skin will simply pump out extra oil in response. Oily skin can sometimes also (paradoxically) be de-hydrated, so look for products that are oil free, but contain really hydrating ingredients such as hyaluronic acid.

Caudalie do a great, really light, hydrating serum containing hyaluronic acid, and Vichy also do great non-comedogenic moisturisers designed for oily skin that is prone to imperfections.

For a quick fix, I recommend Citrus Silk Finishing Powder

Its expensive but lovely in feel and smell. My skin gets so oily, if I wipe a finger on my forehead you can see it and my foundation which slips off with it :S A brush of this (with my own big brush, not the pad) and its gone. I apply it in the morning after the rest of my make up, and then again if needed (rare).

One pot has lasted me nearly six months now.
