Anyone had tooth veneers?

footyfan · 04/10/2013 07:18

I've been really unhappy with my teeth for a while - and went to a dentist to see about having an Inman Aligner fitted, after reading about them here.

Apparently I'm not a suitable candidate for that - but the dentist said my options were fixed braces (up to 2 years) - or veneers.

I don't want to wait two years - but I'm uncomfortable about getting veneers.

Has anyone had any? What type (composite or porcelain). Are you happy with them?

Thanks!

I've had my for 10 years - front four teeth and they were the best present I ever bought myselfSmile They've never split, shattered, caused gum erosion and no black line. People who know me are genuinely surprised when I tell them it's not normal tooth enamel. I also had the shape changed slightly of the teeth to close the gaps as it was causing the teeth move and that has worked a treat.

DoughaDeer · 04/10/2013 07:24

Forgot to say - they're composite. Oh and they were done my a dentist I know and trust!

Bohemond · 04/10/2013 07:24

Ditto - go for it

littleomar · 04/10/2013 07:28

Yes. Two front teeth. They have caused problems with my gums. If I was making the decision again I'd go for braces.

AKissIsNotAContract · 04/10/2013 07:29

It's rare for composite veneers to last 10 years. PP has done well. I wouldn't have them personally (I'm a dentist).

Look at what you are unhappy about with your teeth. If its just the position I would seriously consider Ortho. If its position and colour then Ortho and whitening. I would only suggest veneers if there is something you don't like about your teeth that couldn't be fixed by any other method.

Rylan.

MrsBucketxx · 04/10/2013 07:39

Have I had a "smile make over" with a lazer gum lift and 10 veneers at the top.

Mine are porcelain, and I love my teeth now no black line or problems at all. I used to cover my hand with my mouth when I smiled, it really bothered me. Mine where so twisted it was really the only option.

mine are 8 years old, I don't intent to change them till I have too.

If its what you really want go for it

MrsBucketxx · 04/10/2013 07:41

Mine dont look fake either, a good dentist wont do that and advise against it.

I wanted super white teeth, and glad I didnt go for that. Thats when it looks fake.

I used the london smile clinic, its used in c4 and c5 make iver shows all the time.

ToddleWaddle · 04/10/2013 07:47

Dentist here too. I would not have either unless completely necessary.
If you are going to get good results with braces then choose them. Braces don't need to be visible these days.
Veneers can cause damage as previously mentioned and when need replacing can cause further damage.

RoadToTuapeka · 04/10/2013 07:59

I have two front teeth veneers because I knocked some teeth out falling as a child; expensive orthodontic work as a teen and the two veneers to front teeth later my smile looked less wonky. I had them replaced years later than is advisable but the replacements are miles better. Porcelain and match the colour of my other teeth well.

A friend has the same following a car accident and they look great, you'd never know unless you knew!

But the work to get them done was horrid, filing down natural teeth to fit them, the actual process - no way would I do it unless I had to. If dentists consider another solution is possible to get the look you'd prefer, I'd suggest going for that.

footyfan · 04/10/2013 08:00

Thanks everyone. I've made an appointment to see an orthodontist next week. Hopefully they'll give me some other options. (Invisalign maybe).

Interesting that the dentists wouldn't have veneers!

I should have added: I grind my teeth at night - so am worried I'll damage veneers.

I'm very tempted by an instant fix though.

Am also thinking about this (tiny teeth, erosion, had a brace already) ...Dough where did you have your composites done? Do you mind me asking how munch it was for four teeth?

AKiss I've got bonded composite bits on two of my front teeth(to make them wider) that has lasted for thirty years, although needs redoing now- is that unusual?

Sorry for thread hijack

LividofLondon · 04/10/2013 08:07

I went for Invisalign a few years ago and found them easy to live with, so glad I went for that option instead of veneers.

Steinerino · 04/10/2013 08:15

I had a porcelain veneer done 26 years ago after an accident. It is only just starting to kind of grow out now so it's got a tiny gap at the top. It needs redoing and I totally trust my dentist, she is fantastic. She has warned that each time it's re-done it's unlikely to be as good. I would only have veneers if there was no other option.

lollylaughs · 04/10/2013 08:36

My two front teeth are now capped and the teeth either side are veneers. I've never had a problem with the caps, but the veneers have fallen off before. I had veneers on the front two prior to the capping and I was paranoid to eat anything. I would cut up or break up everything so I wouldn't put pressure on them as it felt like they weren't secure.

They were done on the NHS and sadly there was not a lot of colour choices, so they don't look that great. I am considering have them redone, but because of the cost of it, its just not an option right now.

(they were done as I had abcesses in those natural teeth which caused them to crumble).

Quejica · 04/10/2013 08:44

I have 4 porcelain veneers on my top front teeth. They look as fantastic now as when they were done - twenty three years ago!
Veneers were a very new thing then and my dentist is still so proud of his handiworkSmile

valiumredhead · 04/10/2013 10:14

I used to work for a dentist and she advised against veneers also! I would go for the braces personally.

SundaySimmons · 04/10/2013 13:51

I know someone who has them and her gum must have ever so slightly shrunk and they look like horses teeth.

I wouldn't take the chance, personally.

what I would like is a flipper like the girls in beauty pageants in America wear.

bishboschone · 04/10/2013 13:57

Have a brace.. Veneers involve filing down your own teeth, don't they?? Not like you can go back from that.

Mrsmorton · 04/10/2013 16:55

Another Dentist here, used to have a veneer after a smack in the face as a teenager, it was awful. Had it changed as a student by one of the consultants, looked a bit better but leaked around the margin. Have had to have a crown to replace it now. Steer well clear please. Orthodontics is sooooooooo much better.

Theweek · 05/10/2013 13:20

Orthodontics. Or, you are on a spiral of dentistry which will continually require upkeep, remaking and a little more tooth removal each time.
