Please help me wash my face!

I have really sensitive skin everywhere but especially on my face. I went and bought Simple stuff the other day in the hope that I wouldn't emerge from the shower looking like a well schelpt arse but no luck. This is how my skin looked after using the Simple facewash. The only way it doesn't happen is when I just use water but then my face doesn't look/feel clean.

Please tell me someone has found a solution for this?!

Personally I'd just stick with plain water, I only ever use water on my face, you do get used to it very quickly, and now putting anything else on it, even cream or eye shadow feels like I'm clogging up the pores. Much better, and absolutely free.

I use quite warm water and a flannel (clean flannel every day). rub the flannel several times over my face. Find it comforting and effective. I have greasy skin and it gets rid of all grease and light make up (thin layer of foundation). it is the gentle rubbing that gets it clean for me, just splashing with water is ineffective on my skin.

I second the Oil Cleansing method, just make sure you repeat the process a couple of times so you don't clog your skin with oil. Otherwise it's fab. Then you could use Lush's Celestial to moisturise - beautiful on sensitive skin.

Or you could try Liz Earle Cleanse and Polish - works great for me and I have sensitive skin/ eczema. I find it better than oil.

CointreauVersial · 02/10/2013 23:15

Warm water and a flannel here too. I've never used any other cleanser on my face.

I have super sensitive skin and rosacea and by far the best things I have found are Kiehls' Supremely Gentle Eye Makeup Remover (which I can use all over my face!) I wet my face, apply a few blobs (it's like a serum consistency), gentle rub in and rinse off/ or take off with warm, wet cotton wool (I like the Body Shop's organic square pads, the biggish ones). Kiehl's offer a money back guarantee if you react - can't argue with that!
You can get it at John Lewis (online or instore in some of their stores), or you can buy at a Kiehls' store (over the phone, their flagship store is in London, Covent Garden, I think)
The other one is Trilogy Very Gentle Cleanser, a bit creamier but very gentle! I used to buy this at Boots but it seems to have disappeared. You can still buy at lookfantastic.com I think
I am not sure if it breaks the rules on here but if you are allowed then you can PM me and if I can get hold of a couple of mini jars I can sample you a little of each to try if you want...

LeoandBoosmum · 03/10/2013 00:22

Oh, I use the Trilogy in the same way as the Kiehls'. :)
Both of these products are pricier than Simple - my face reacted violently in the past to that...not at all at gentle as they make out! - last me around 5 or 6 months with daily use so it works out well. Both are fragrance free and can also be used on the eyes, so removing the need for a separate eye make up remover.

and

I know if you're used to a foaming cleanser, a lotion or cream (Trilogy is not really a cream more a lotion that's on the creamier side) can seem off putting, but my can't cope with a film being left behind (even though I have dryish skin) and neither of these does that...

JeanPaget · 03/10/2013 00:27

I like the clinique balm cleanser, it's totally unscented and not at all drying or harsh.

I also love Liz Earle cleanse and polish, it's never caused any reaction for me.

DaleyBump · 03/10/2013 00:37

Ooh, lots of great ideas. Thanks a lot everyone, hopefully my face won't feel like it's on fire when I wash it next :)

There was a very long thread a way back proclaiming the amazingness of Body Shop aloe range, I was suckered in (that's mn for you Grin) and it is brilliant, it calmed my amazingly sensitive skin and made it happy and clear again to the point where I can now bung all sort of shite on it and it doesn't mind. It's a miracle. I did use it religiously and nothing else for about a year though, before I started messing with my skin again.

MousyMouse · 03/10/2013 07:32

I have very sensitive skin.
I use an oily moisturiser to take off make up and then I wash with warm water and soap (bar of soap).
I find I need to use soap that isn't creamy or my skin will react.

lollylaughs · 03/10/2013 08:03

If you go for the Clinique cleanser, definitely get a tester first. I bought some recently and caused the most horrendous eczema.

Passthecake30 · 03/10/2013 08:29

Another vote for clinique comforting cleanser. Plus their extra mild clarifying lotion is fab.

closetcat · 03/10/2013 09:02

Can I just add that part of the problem may be the shower. I thought I had sensitive skin but I think it's more reactive than anything and reacts immediately to the heat from the shower. I would emerge red-faced whether I washed my face or not!

Now I try to keep my face out of the water (admittedly not easy) as much as possible and use micellar cleansers (cleansing waters - lancome and decleor do fab ones)

LividofLondon · 03/10/2013 09:07

Ebaymad does the oil cleansing method work well with removing make-up, even around the eyes?

SuperConfused · 03/10/2013 09:38

Cetaphil, recommended by many dermatologists, pretty cheap (like £10 for a bottle that will last six months) but can be hard to find. Creamy cleanser, remove with cotton wool or facecloth, I think it's the most gentle I've tried and have stuck with it for three years.

ebaymad · 03/10/2013 17:15

It's great for removing make-up, even stubborn mascara.

Just massage it all in and use a wet flannel or muslin (not a muslim as i told a woman at work).
