Covering grey

Those of you who colour your hair to cover grey - how often do you need to do it?

I'm finding the greys coming through every 3 weeks Sad Costs a fortune as I go to a salon. Although my colour is a lot lighter than my natural brunettte, these damn greys keep showing early.

Hairdresser said it's 'cause my hair grows really quick.

Mine needs to be covered every 10-14 days as 3/4 of my hairline around my face is pure white and I have really dark hair otherwise. I have to use peroxide first and then dye but even that is starting to fail. I often still have more dye left on my scalp than on the white parts because it just washes off.

Seems like I am now going to have to admit defeat. The Highland fashionista looks cool with her natural hair. I just wish more people did it in their thirties because it wouldn't seem so alien.

I have salt and pepper elsewhere on my hair with less of a sprinkling on top and look dreadful blonde so that isn't an option. Your hair doesn't sound like it grows faster than the norm it is just that when you dye it dark the contrast is nearly immediately obvious. Two weeks and it's normal to have 1/4 regrowth.

Have you seen the going grey thread? I'm now dye-free and I'm not yet 40. I am about 25% grey and I feel LIBERATED now that I no longer dye my hair. DH loves it which is a confidence boost. I like to think I'm making a statement.

naturelover- could you post a picture of your hair? I'll put mine on my profile to show how grey it is.

I have the same problem. In between dyes I use a root touch up stick (basically hair mascara) which I buy quite cheaply off amazon - so at least I can cover the grey for special nights out. It lasts bout 24hr before fading.

Thanks for the replies. Smile

naturelover - going grey is NOT an option!! (At least, not until I'm 85!!!!) I can imagine it being liberating & I see ladies with gorgeous grey hair out and about, but it's not for me. Smile

Crazy - I'm going to check out the hair mascara, does it blend in when you use it?

Yes - I put small amount along root then rub into hair - friends have often thought I'd had it done. I think there are various shades of brown you can get so the first time as they were only couple of quid I bought a couple of shades. I'm not ready to go cruella de'vil just yet!

Sorry stepped I'm not keen on posting a pic on my profile.
I'd say my temples are about 70% grey, most of my hair is merely speckled, and at the back there is hardly any grey at all.
My natural colour is light brown so I admit it's not as obvious as if I were brunette, say.
Being my natural colour isn't more ageing I don't think, I reckon the colour suits my skintone much more than when I dyed it (I found it particularly hard to match my natural colour). Anyway, what's wrong with looking my age? I don't mind it at all.
I've become quite militant about the tyranny of hair dye. When I see women aged 60+ with not a hint of grey I actually think it looks ridiculous. I mean, DH doesn't dye his greys and I think he looks sexy as hell.

Horsemad · 02/10/2013 19:54

My DH looks great with his grey hair but it still doesn't make me want to bite the bullet. Smile

I use half a pack of loreal root touch up in between the hairdressers, at the temples and parting
