Appropriate dress length for church wedding?

I normally wear below the knee stuff but the last wedding I was at the younger female guests were all wearing eye wateringly short dresses and I felt a total frump (am 32).

So am thinking of wearing a short dress for a wedding I'm going to next week and just wanted to check the general opinion!

(Just to add, without wanting to sound totally offensive, the wedding next week will be mainly quite 'posh' guests, the last wedding with all the short dresses was DH's side of the family who are - I hate to say this - a bit rough around the edges, if that makes any difference)

I think that the current assumption that short 'party' dresses are wedding attire is god awful - I think a knee length/midi length is the most suitable. I usually go with a Lady V dress (50s style, full skirt), a tea dress or very tailored trousers (am 34). Sorry, I am sure your dress is lovely but I don't personally think short-short is on for the day time or a formal occasion

Knee length or longer for definite.

Shorter is just low-classy for a church wedding.

I agree, my usual wedding outfits are below the knee pencil dresses which I always feel comfortable in but I did buy them years ago and wondered if I'm now a bit behind the times

I don't like short-short either. It's for nightclubs, not weddings. But then I'm 37 so probably technically an old fogey now :) For a posh wedding I would go on the knee, maybe just above if it was floaty rather than tight, but definitely not mid-thigh!

Phew, I will remove the short dress from my shopping basket :)

I think appropriateness of skirt length is directly proportionate to the denier of tights worn. The darker the tights, the shorter the skirt can be.

There's a similar relationship between skirt length and how much boob is on show.

If you insist on wearing a short dress make sure you have the appropriate stripper heels to go with it. Grin I went to a wedding like this over the summer and also felt a frump in my knee length dress and standard court shoes.

I think a hemline just over the knee is fine but 2" below the arse is not.

I'm 23 and find the whole just-below-the-arse-cheek style dresses phenomenon pretty horrific to be honest, however great your arse cheeks/thighs may be. Surely not suitable for a wedding? Maybe I'm a young frump Grin

The nuns that taught me at school would say that the skirt has to touch the floor when you're kneeling.

Just remember how cold it can be in church at this time of year. I see a lot of bridesmaids and guests dressed for the nightclub and not for a cold building with minimal heating. Brides can get away with it as they are full of adrenalin but if you do wear a short hemline then put a nice smart warm coat over the top.

I was bridesmaid at a wedding in the summer and one guest had an especially short dress and everyone was talking about her for the wrong reasons! yes she is young, pretty and slim but Christ on a bike you could see her backside! I'm only 32 and even if I had the best figure in the world I'd have a bit of class and decorum at a wedding. I think mid thigh - slightly above the knee is fine. I use the bend over rule - if I can't bend over / down in it then its not suitable.
