Proper foundation!

I'm looking for proper coverage, none of this 'dewy' BB / CC shite.

30-something, combination skin, bit of roseacea, fair-ish with pinkness on cheeks and redness around nose I want to mask. Bit of a hag, really.

In last couple of years I have tried Chanel Vitalumiere (none of the shades are right), Boots Rip off (same), Estee Lauder Doublewear (too heavy) and doublewear Light (again, none of the shades are a good match for my skin) and Clinique tinted moisturisers and CC creams (good colours for me but not enough coverage). So frustrated.

Help!

Have you tried Mac? it's fabulous. I also like Bare Minerals but it's not for everyone.

Vichy dermablend

revolutionised my life. Use sparingly with a little blush over the top (because it will completely cover your roseacea)

MAC Studio Fix is similar in terms of coverage to Estee Lauder Doublewear - but the shades are totally different and the texture of it is more moist and needs powdering (I don't always powder Doublewear, and I have oily skin). If you powder afterwards it lasts a good length of time.

If you're struggling with shades, try Illamasqua for an excellent shade range. I think they have overhauled their foundation offerings recently and I've not tried the new range but they used to do a reasonably full coverage one that got good reviews. I'm sure they would give you a sample to try at home before you buy.

Vichy-blimey, tons of shades, how on earth do you know what's yours? I'm a Mac NW 20. Any idea please?Smile

emsyj · 01/10/2013 20:51

You used to be able to buy a tester palette of the Vichy dermablend - like this - before you buy a full size one.

do you live anywhere near department stores where you can go and try them out? Will save you a fortune in mistakes. We can all recommend our favourites, but at the end of the day it's what works for you.

I have YSL Touche eclat foundation, it can be layered up. I like it.

goodasitgets · 02/10/2013 01:47

I really like urban decay naked liquid foundation. If I use real techniques stippling brush to put it on, everyone comments on my skin. I'm surprised its not mentioned much on here

goodasitgets · 02/10/2013 01:57

Review of it here with photos on her skin

I use a CC so no good to you but notice Vichy dermablend already mentioned and have a friend with rosacea who swears by it (she looks good with it on, I've seen the before and after 'shot').

KinNora · 02/10/2013 06:51

Yes, Illamasqua Skin Base, one of the only colour ranges in foundation that is so extensive that there are several too pale for me or Make Up Forever HD, the only trouble is that it might be hard to find stockists so you can test it.

PlayedThePinkOboe · 02/10/2013 07:01

Merrily - your skin tone sounds quite similar to mine, I also have a touch of blue (Scottish heritage) and right now I'm in love with Shiseido which suits us pale gals very well! Actually I have about 6 foundations which I use over the course of a year because my skin tone is not the same 365/days a year!

Max factor all day flawless 3 in 1 facefinity

I have bought every foundation under the sun from the cheapest to the dearest and this is perfect.

My sympathies to you - I have a cupboard full of bottles of foundation used once or twice and then becoming redundant. The one I keep going back to is L'Oreal True Match Mineral foundation which is a powder you buff into the skin. Takes a matter of moments to apply, covers all my redness on cheeks and around nose, lasts all day and doesn't transfer. Not too expensive and the last one I bought was half price in Boots.

Laura Mercier Silk Cream foundation is one of the best I've ever tried. Medium build able coverage, not too dewy and it can be powdered down, lasts well even without a primer and still looks like skin.

Vibbe · 02/10/2013 12:06

I love Laura Mercier Tinted Moisturiser. I have the oil-free version. It's more coverage than other tinted moisturisers and BB/CC/DD creams, but it's very nice on the skin. And they have quite a lot of colours.

A proper foundation I love is Diorskin Nude. It gives more coverage, but still looks very natural.

Walnut8 · 02/10/2013 12:24

My skin is similar to yours but I get breakouts as well which I have to cover. I'm also MAC NW20.

The best ive found are: Giorgio armani lasting silk foundation, lancome teint ultra, revlon colorstay (colours arent quite so good - a little grey or "off" - but this is my everyday foundation)

MAC breaks me out, LM silk creme was too heavy and dry, vichy is very very heavy, estee lauder DW was too heavy and dry ...
