Would a face wash with salicylic acid cause spots

before it starts working its magic? Since having children, my normal skin has turned oily with spots on my forehead, chin and cheeks (doesn't leave much uncovered!). I have just started using Garnier Skin Naturals Pure Active 2in1 Make-Up Remover Purifying Gel and I have more spots than I started out with. Does salicylic acid cause this?

It's possible. I used clinique clarifying lotion for years with no problems. Then they added salicylic acid to it and I developed a persistent patch of spots that just kept coming up time and time again until I stopped using it and they cleared up.

I am now using one of their moisturisers that has it in but it is so far down the ingredients list near the bottom and I don't think it is bothering me.

Hope that load of waffle helped.

Oh just to add I'm glad it's not only my skin that has gone to pot since children. I've not only developed rosacea on my face (which has got Oilier too) I have started getting a spotty rash on my back and chest too!!

And soon the wrinkles will be setting in!!!!

Thanks for your reply, the salicylic acid is far down the list on mine too.

My skin became bad after DC1, cleared up and was radiant during pregnancy with DC2 and then went back to being bad after his birth. I miss my normal skin but there is a positive for us: apparently oily skin keeps wrinkles at bay so we can be young-looking, spotty old girls!

Has been a nightmare having to change all my skincare though!!

Maybe it's just an initial purge and will settle down. If they keep coming up more so than usual I'd ditch it.

Good job the kids are worth it!!! Hormones have ALOT to answer for!!!

I was given a money saving tip from a scientist friend of mine. I crush up 4 dispersible aspirin and add a few drops of water to make a paste. Pat onto your face for approx 3 to 5 mins and rinse in cold water. Aspirin is full of salicylic acid apparently. My skin has never looked so clear and felt so smooth. I do it once a week.It cost about 24 p for a pack of aspirin.

Oh I remember that when I started with the clinique toner the lady told me it may get worse before it gets better and that it was bringing all the bad stuff to the surface to clear it. However my breakout happened a month into using it so I think it was more that it was irritating my skin. Especially as it was on my cheek and I never used to break out there.

yy aspirin is salicylic acid and costs, what, 36p a box for dispersible ones

salicylic acid is unlikely to cause spots unless it is causing some mild irritation

it could be a different ingredient +- hormonal etc

This was me last year - full on sporty, couldn't take the dc swimming and now I have not one spot and lovely clear skin. Get thee to the GP - what has worked for me was using the topical antibiotic zineryt and Neutrogena visibily clear black head eliminating triple action cleanser. After a couple of months I no longer needed the zineryt and I maintain now happily with the cleanser. Pores do start to clog if I run out though- this is my routine now and I won't change.
Don't suffer with spots- your gp can help. I am lucky as a friend is a dermatologist and on the side of the football pitch told me to go to the gp the next day and get a oral and topical antibiotic - I did and they went! .

Salicylic acid should be good for spot prone skin but always breaks me out.
It could be that or it could be that the face wash is too drying and has the opposite affect on your skin, making it produce more oil and leading to more spots.

Notfootball · 04/10/2013 11:51

Well my skin has improved! I continued with the face wash, using coconut oil as a moisturiser and adding some vitamins suggested on here (not sure if the latter has had such a rapid effect) and my spots are clearing up quickly.

I second going to see your GP - best thing I ever did about my spots. I've been nearly spot free for 9 months now with the antibiotic gel - hardly have to use it anymore.
