Aargh! What to wear to HENLEY ROYAL REGATTA on Friday???

Have been invited to a corporate tent thing at Henley Regatta on Friday. It's not the very posh steward's enclosure bit, but I know there is still a dress code -i.e. ladies must wear a skirt below the knee!

What on earth should I wear? Not sure I have anything. I could possibly get out to Monsoon, Debenhams etc before then, but no time for really designer type shopping. Do I need a hat? What about shoes - won't it be grassy & a pain in high heels?
Apparently the men in the party will be wearing the stripey blazer stuff, so there's a steer.....

which enclosure will you be?

JackieNo · 27/06/2006 11:35

Some info here - a bit tongue in cheek, though.

piglit · 27/06/2006 11:37

Have you got a summery suit that goes below your knee? Or a longish skirt and a smart jacket? Or a flouncey dress? I've been a few times and I've worn smart summer type stuff. Don't wear high heels though as they'll end up covered in mud, especially in this weather! You don't need a hat.

Make sure you wear sunglasses so you can check out the scrummy rowers' physiques without being spotted gawping....

MrsDoolittle · 27/06/2006 11:38

Don't worry about designer stuff, honestly
A summer dress, a hat and strappy sandals. You would probably need a jacket or cardi too.
Just dress well, doesn't matter where it's from.

Things are changing culturally anyway. It's become cool to look good and spend as little as possible.

MrsDoolittle · 27/06/2006 11:40

You don't have to wear a hat but I find it's a good excuse to though. I like wearing hats
And piglit is right, heels are likely to disappear in the grass.

You'll probably need to sharpen your elbows too

MrsDoolittle · 27/06/2006 11:42

Having said that Friday is a good day, it'll be much quieter.

Legacy · 27/06/2006 11:45

But I can't wear a skirt without heels!! Make me look like an earth mother type...

Wear heels then, most women do except those few who are trying to be sensible.

JackieNo · 27/06/2006 11:54

How about wedges - won't sink into the grass so much?

piglit · 27/06/2006 11:55

If you go for chunky heels you might not sink in too far....

BTW I met my dh at Henley. Best day of my life.

NomDePlume · 27/06/2006 11:57

Piglit, cod has a thread for you....

JackieNo · 27/06/2006 11:57

Piglit, slight hijack - have you seen Cod's thread looking for you?

piglit · 27/06/2006 11:57

Okey dokey. Will check it out. Thanks

JackieNo · 27/06/2006 11:58

fully support everything Rabbit says about dress code - it's all true.

I haven't got tags for anywhere (wretched little sister gave them all away to clients, grr) so will be wearing my £10 polkadot Primark dress.

If it really is 34ºC on Saturday I'll wear a hat for the shade alone!

Legacy · 27/06/2006 13:06

eve - think I'm in at the REMENHAM CLUB

OP posts:
MrsDoolittle · 27/06/2006 13:15

My dsis is a Remenham member, it's a nice enclosure, more casual than some.

MrsBadger · 27/06/2006 13:24

Remenham has nice loos also, but as you're there on the fri none of them will be too bad.

Remenham is lovely, right on the river bank.

I would say smart casual... you will be able to sit sipping your Pimms on a comfy chair watching the world go by... and the odd boat!

Friday is very busy in Henley, traffic will be a nightmare and parking even more so.

Don't know how you will ge there but Remenham is a hike from the station and car parks down the river path which isn't the easiet to walk along.

I envy you going.. used to compete at Heleny with crews in the Thames and Britianna.... back in the days when I was 7 stone!

HENLEY 2006 - STYLE REPORT

This years' ubiquitous dress
similar shape also seen in in green, red and teal.
However this is not a reason not to buy it as every single woman wearing it looked good in it.

Also popular were the Hobbs polka-dot dresses and anything at all from Coast, particularly prom dresses.

No further details as by that point I was several glasses of champagne up and stopped making notes.
