Great Gatsby Help!

OrangeFizz99 · 28/09/2013 14:11

We've been invited to a big, lavish 50th party with the theme of Great Gatsby at the beginning of Dec...

I have boobs and thighs and a non existant budget... Embellished drop waist dresses in nude tones are going to cost lots and make me look like a potato quite frankly.

We are also ttc so maybe in early stages of pg if I am lucky.

Anyone a bit good at dressing in this area and got any cheap tips?!

Thank you!

Could you go for more of a bias cut style, those were popular in the thirties and late twenties I think.

Combined with the flapper girl hair, head wear and make-up then maybe a faux fur or feather type accessory.

Look on ebay, there are lots of costumes and accessories for that period at cheap prices.

I went to one last December. Lots of the women wore beaded type dresses or looked like they'd hired fancy dress stuff. I wore a plain black silk shift dress from warehouse and then bought a nice hairpiece, fishnet tights and black heels so my outfit can be worn again.

Oh and I had my hair pinned up flapper style.

Could wear tailored tweed trousers, blouse, tie and brogues, hair slicked back, with cigarette holder and monocle.

There's usually someone sporting this look in fiction of the era...

If you really want to channel "Gatsby" there are many other characters who are not Daisy, Tom, Gatsy, Jordan (ie wealthy). You could be George who is a garage owner, his wife Myrtle (having and affair, bit less polished) or one of the servants. It might not be as glamorous but some overalls or a skirt and white apron would be cheap,

(NB I am only half joking. People who have a theme like this are looking for glamour. Turning up as a mechanic might be amusing).

Thanks guys, like the plain black dress idea!

I'm not sure I could pull off the mechanic thing. Also don't get lots of chance to get all glammed up (quite annoyed its a theme instead of a just wear a nice dress party but there you go).

Fishnets is a good call (for costume not in general hah).

Thanks

You could buy a sparkly scarf to wear with your black dress or a bejewelled cap and bag to jazz it up.

this style looks like it would suit you and give a nod to the era...add a hairband and some mid heel t bar shoes - cute!

Can you afford to splurge £25?
