Help me find a hairstyle for my six yo, please?

We've just been for a trim and had her hair thinned out a bit so it'll be a bit easier to manage.

On the way home she asked for a cut like mine which is longish but with choppy layers and a side parting/sweepy fringe.

I have NO idea where to even start looking for something similar for her Confused any suggestions welcome Smile

does she have a fringe? If not just start by growing it out. The hairdresser advised against a fiddly hairstyle for dd (9) and she just has it all cut one length at the back and has taken a few years to grow her fringe out. When she is older she can get some choppy layers put in.

lucysmam · 28/09/2013 10:10

No, no fringe.

It's still fuzzy.....maybe I'll just run my straighteners over it & see what it looks like

Sorry no offence but why on earth would you straighten a six year olds hair?

At that age, putting rag rolls in her hair or sparkly clips is far more appropriate.

lucysmam · 28/09/2013 12:20

I never said I was going to do it every day? or for a debate over the rights & wrongs of trying it out & seeing what it looks like.....

I'd like for her not to look like a raggy doll though

She's only 6 :(.

At that age it should be about dressing up and pretend games etc, not coiffured hairstyles.

lucysmam · 28/09/2013 12:36

ha! coiffured? seriously?

I had both curled and straightened dd's hair at that age - it was not a regular occurrence. DD's hair currently looks as if she has been dragged through a hedge backwards though

lucysmam · 28/09/2013 12:52

ilove, I didn't think I'd be the first or last to try it out Smile

Mine sports the dragged through a hedge backwards look too....maybe a style's just not practical atm....something's got to make it easier though Confused

conditioner maybe on the ends?

Is her hair very curly but it looks frizzy?

Is that what you mean.

MortifiedAdams · 28/09/2013 13:04

Fill a spray bottle with conditioner and water. Spray on and comb through each morning. Either plait it damp or, once dry, ponytail or bun.

She is six - she needs neat and tidy and out of the way for playing.

Beehatch · 28/09/2013 13:07

Conditioner is a good idea, I can't brush my 6yo's hair without it.

And FWIW she has also occasionally had the straighteners through her hair at her request when she has seen me doing mine. No harm done and it does give it a lovely shine.

She doesn't have a fringe either, but annoyingly won't wear bunches or clips, only a headband so she constantly has hair in her face [Hmm]

Lucysmam, my daughter is fifteen and so I'm probably out of the loop with young girls hairstyles. Personal grooming and styling is happening at a younger age nowadays I'm sorry if I was being bullish.

Do you use a tangle geezer? They are excellent.

SundaySimmons · 28/09/2013 13:25

Geezer not geezer!

lucysmam · 28/09/2013 13:48

nope, no curls...just a mop of fuzz like me.

I haven't got a tangle teaser (or geezer for that matter Grin )...will have a look at those.

And try the conditioner in a spray bottle for the morning, see how that goes. I might bung a bit of my aussie stuff on her in the shower too. Maybe it just needs a bit more tlc

My DD is 4 and has wavy hair past her shoulders - the hairdresser just very slightly layers the ends but that's all. I like simple hair cuts on little girls and if her hair is prone to frizz I wouldn't bother with sideswept fringes - which I think is too mature a look for a 6 year old really.

I use teatree shampoo and then my conditioner on DD's hair everytime I wash it. For school she either has french plaits or a ponytail but in a side parting - if that makes sense.

I'd also try and let it dry naturally if its prone to frizz and agree that tangle teezer brushes are great. I also sometimes shove some dry oil stuff on DD's hair - purely because I bought it and didn't like it.

LeoandBoosmum · 28/09/2013 14:42

I think 6 is a little too young to be emulating mum's hair. I know at this age you are the centre of her world and she looks up to you and wants to be like you, but what you describe sounds like too mature a hairstyle for such a young child. Her hair type sounds quite difficult to manage already anyway so I wouldn't complicate it with aside fringe. At her age I think it's best to keep it as simple as possible and try to work with what her hair is like naturally. Tell her she can get a similar hairstyle to you when she's older. Tell her it's very hard to get like yours and takes a looong time to style. I think 6 years of age is a little young for a child to be concerned with hair styles. However, often children say things on a whim. She'll hopefully have forgotten the conversation ever happened over the next few days :)

PrimalLass · 28/09/2013 14:51

I run the straighteners through my 5-year-old's hair. It is very thick and the underneath has a life of its own. The Babyliss BigHair is more effective however.

Me and my daughter both have chin length bobs with a fringe Grin

littlemissnormal · 28/09/2013 15:29

My 7 years and 1 week year old has a chin length bob on a side parting with a graduated fringe down the side.

It's cute and practical and I French plait the sides across the top of her head and down the sides for when she is dancing or swimming.

L'oreal do great kids shampoos and a thick conditioner which might be good and smells of cherries and almonds, totally lush!

ilovepowerhoop · 28/09/2013 15:36

I have always used conditioner on dd's hair and detangling spray when required

LeoandBoosmum · 28/09/2013 15:45

Primal :)
I think a bob is universal, looks great on kids and women, really... I think it's a very cute, age-appropriate cut on little girls. And, Lily Allen's just had her bob with a fringe cut back in and it looks amazing! What the OP was suggesting in terms of a style would never suit such a young child though, in my opinion :)
