Should everyone own a decent trench coat?

I've never wanted/looked at buying a trench coat as i had a colour/style consultation (Colour Me Beautiful) a few years ago and was advised to avoid double breasted coats. However i randomly tried one on the other day and was surprised that it looked ok, and having checked back on my style consultation notes and actually it recommends a trench coat (which is pictured as double breasted), so now i am confused!

I like the look of this one www.happyrainydays.com/trenchcoat/26420.html ... as it is properly waterproof, has a hood and is fully lined in cotton. Any thoughts?

Thanks

Randomly I was pondering this the other day!
Can't help you out with the answer but I can say I have a rainy happy days coat and I love it! It's very well made, waterproof and so lovely to not be wearing that plasticky stuff that makes you sweat!
Will be interested to hear if I need one of their trench coats too Grin

Blimey if you like it and feel good in it then have one! I could never adhere to a list of clothes or colours handed to me by someone else but then I don't really get why people have that done.

Personally double breasted isn't for me. I feel they look a bit flappy and untidy if left undone. But the one you linked to does look a nice coat.

TBH I have a Boden rain mac (short) I used to have another lush longer one of their Raincoats but it got lost...

now I'd prefer one with a hood or detachable hood. My short trench coat is a tad impractical.

I initially read this and thought it was a form of subtle marketing, now i'm not so sure.Whatever, the trenches look lovely and I love the Parkas.I would be seriously tempted to buy one if your feedback is good.
In answer to your question, trench coats suit some shapes and not others so the only thing to do is to try them on.

LOL - IceCream - I was thinking about that too the other day re colours.

Years ago a neighbour gave me a Color Me Beautiful book where I worked out I was either a summer or winter (I look good in black and pastels).

But TBH I think if you can't work out what colors/styles suit you by a certain age there's something lacking - awaits flames. I have always KNOWN I'm not a sporty look person whereas my friend Sarah is. I also suit floral prints (small) whereas I think Sarah totally wouldn't suit florals!

Sarah also suits hot pink, bright green etc and I like bright green too.

Above are just examples.

I think a well-cut trenchcoat is one of those things that can make almost anyone look stylish - I always feel more put-together when wearing one, even a £30 Burberry knock-off that I had from H&M years ago.

I currently have a nice khaki one from M&S that looks much more expensive than it was, but I do wish it had a hood. The one you linked to looks lovely. And how could you resist something called "Quinty Cognac"?!

allmycats · 27/09/2013 09:57

IMO there are some people who look like a sack og spuds in a trench, not all body shapes suit the belted look - you will know what suits you

TiredMule · 27/09/2013 10:05

So what body shapes suit a trench coat? I'm a bit of pear shape (though not massive) size 10, 5'8", would I look like a sack of potatoes?

Tiredmule I'm glad you said your other Happy Rainy Days coat is good quality... i am also drawn by the cotton lining, as the polyester lining on my current raincoat just makes me sweat.

I'm just nervous about ordering something online as i've ordered coats before that haven't fitted/suited when they've arrived, and i've lost out having to pay postage. Am also reluctant due to the cost... over £100 is a lot to spend (for me, anyway!)
