Suede sheepskin boots and wearing them outside

I have memories of last winter being bloody cold. So this year, I am thinking of investing in some ultra warm sheepskin boots to keep me snug on the school run.

I've never had any before. Do they mark and stain horribly? Or is there something I can spray on them, that works to keep them clean and dry? I really like the grey ones as they go with everything I have.

I don't want to spend in the region of £150/200 for boots that end up looking tatty, no matter how warm they keep me feet.

You can get suede protector spray & that helps, my sheepskin boots are dark brown & therefore don't really show the dirt. But Ugg type boots aren't really designed for bad weather. If you're just going to be in the car then they'll be ok. But if you're going to be outdoors in the rain at all, I've found that leather boots with sheepskin lining are much more resilient.

^^ sorry rubbish link!

Drat. I walk everywhere, so i'm guessing from what you say that they would end up looking tatty.

I agree that the natalya ones are hardcore! But yes, they will definitely keep you warm. I am looking for ones that are smarter, but they still need to be flat and comfortable for walking everyday. And warm. Warm is an absolute requirement.

Celtic & Co do some that are water resistant called aqua lamb. Not bought them myself but am considering it. I have just got a pair of their sheep skin slippers and my word they are delicious and warm!

Ifcatshadthumbs · 25/09/2013 16:27

Like the look of the Natalya actually they are similar to the ugg Adirondacks which are way out my price range!

Uggs & Timberland do sheepskin lined leather boots:

Ugg biker boots

Here are some other smartish sheepskin or faux-fur lined boots:

Thanks for the tip, ifcats, but I am looking for some tall boots. They aqua lamb look like they would be waterproof though, from the reviews.

Twinkle, thanks so much for those links. I have never heard of the brands, so I wouldnt have eve found them. You have made me think about trying ecco boots too, as they came up as a suggestion.

Zalando is good for boots as a) it's German & their winters are proper cold & b) it stocks good European brands you can't get here.

My favourite brand for waterproof/warm/comfy boots is Aquatalia Which I think is N. American.

They're expensive, outside your requested price bracket, however I'm still wearing a pair I've had for 20 years! They're still totally waterproof, they've never leaked and they're elegant.

FreshLeticia · 25/09/2013 20:11

I have Celtic sheepskin suede ones and they are ok if you use Nikwax waterproofing, but they are not really designed for really wet weather. Cold and damp is fine though. Aqualamb would be ok in the rain. There is a heavy-duty sheepskin boot you can get from the New Zealand boot websites which is ok too. I wore mine out though!
Have you considered something like a Ryedale waterproof knee-high boot with boot liners? I use them for farm visits and they are fab and really comfy. They have a walking boot sole here
You can pay a lot of money for some makes of this type of boot, but the Ryedales are good value. They do a zip one as well.

Twinklestein · 25/09/2013 20:18

I find the Celtic/Ugg style boots - even the ones with waterproof uppers - have soles that are fairly slippery in wet conditions..

HappyAsEyeAm · 26/09/2013 08:43

I like those Aquatalia boots a lot Twinkle. They're perfect - smart, warm and waterproof, and a little bit different. But the ones I really like are $595, which is way over budget. My absolute top budget is £200, and I would prefer to pay about £150.

I think I will wave goodbye to Celtic/Ugg sheepskins as I don't think they're made for the purpose I need, wihch is outdoor walking in all weathers, and boots which stay looking smart.

Fresh the Ryedales are a bit too practical looking for me. When you say you wear them for farm visits, that's exactly the purpose the boots like like they were made for to me. Which is brilliant if that's what you do. But I live in the London burbs, and I would always wear my wellies if I went to a petting farm with the DC.

Thanks all for the suggestions. I am going to try some ecco boots on at the weekend, I hope.
