The theme for my works do this year is vintage glamour & I love the above dress. But would prefer not to have to order from America if possible.

Can anyone find me something in a similar 30s movie star style?

I really don't think that first dress has a vintage look to it, sorry- I know it's on a vintage site, but I wouldn't think 'vintage' if I saw someone wearing it. It looks like a prom dress to me.

Really? To me it screams Ginger Rogers!

My second idea is to go for a 50s swing/rockabilly dress or a wiggle dress but not sure if that will be glamorous enough, I've lost weight recently and want to look a million dollars.

I want something that does look authentic but don't really want to spend more than £100...do I have a hope in hell?

Actually, that phase eight one is on This Morning at the moment and it's really lovely... Much more vintage looking than the picture suggests...

There is too much ruching around the hips - particularly at the back. That will accentuate width and make you look shorter. I also think the back looks like it has been cut by someone who doesnt know anything about pattern cutting - like the fabric has been forced to fit the shape.

Thank you, I've lost weight recently & want to look fabulous but don't have a clue. With a 3yo and a 1yo I don't have much opportunity to glam up!

I completely understand OP :)

This navy gown would look stunning with a diamante necklace and a cocktail ring (I wouldn't wear bracelets with this fabric....from bitter experience they are likely to snag if they have "claw" settings on them). You could further glam up with a faux fur stole or capelet. A beaded evening jacket/capelet would work just as well too and fits with the era.

This is also gorgeous but more covered up . Again, a statement necklace and killer heels would finish the outfit perfectly. That dress is also available in other colours too.

eBay bargain brings you in at the waist which is great for both your height and figure.

This one is stunning almost bought this myself for a 1930s event I attended earlier this year. Ghost's indigo shade is a really beautiful hue - not remotely a dull navy.

Also gorgeous and the colour is stunning IRL.

Novella dress again in pink this is a very authentic colour for the period.

Very tempted by the Clarissa dress, should I go for silver, sea green or navy though? (Not convinced the pink will suit me!)

Have you seen a Ghost dress irl mrshels if not do try to because the fabric is very thin and they are unlined. I tried one on and it was not flattering on the bum or tum at all (am size 12 5ft8 curvy) it was also a bit long on me so I think you'll need to get it taken up a bit.

If you do get a Clarissa i'd go for navy as a potentially more flattering non see thru option.

Hope i'm wrong and it wasn't Clarissa I tried so I don't know for sure but I thought i'd mention so you can try and see one for real before spending.

Thanks for the warning. I think I might order from the ghost store so I can return it if it's not what I'm looking for (if I decide to go with a ghost dress that is!) Am resigned to having to take it up miles, that's the story of my life. Will also be spanxed up to my eyebrows!

I agree that some of the Ghost dresses can be a little see-through. Depends whether they are crepe or satin. IMO the satin versions are far more flattering. I wore anti-VPL pants (can't remember which brand but from John Lewis) and they worked brilliantly. I'm not a fan of Spanx type underwear - can't bear the squeezing & increased temperature!

Personally I would opt for the navy Clarissa. It's got a lovely dramatic vintage feel to it - just what you wanted :)
