Anyone deciding to grow their hair?

I am naturally curly but dry it straight. I have the 'Rachel' style bob but want to go long again. I like to be able to tie it up & maybe leave it to dry naturally. At the moment I have to wash & blow dry it every other day.
I will have a trim every 8 weeks & do conditioning treatments. I am going to use a leave in conditioner too.
Are there any good skin, hair & nail supplements to help with hair growth?

I grew my hair a couple of years ago (it's shortish again now) and just wanted to ask, do you really need to trim it every 8 weeks? Fine if you do, but I went for a trim every 12 weeks and it didn't get ratty, and grew fast. Just worried it will take you ages with 8-weekly trims!

Skinheadmermaid · 23/09/2013 13:30

I started growing my hair seriously seven-ish years ago. I give it the very occasional trim, about once a year. Its naturally curly, i wash it everyday ( it has to be wet or i can't style it in any way) with shampoo and conditioner for dry hair.
It's waist length, probably would be belt length if i bothered to straighten it out. I pretty much leave it to its own devices other then scrunching product in and its strong and shiny.
I don't take any supplements for hair but indian style hair oil is good.

You don't NEED to trim your hair every eight weeks, thats a bs old wives tale. I've never had a split end.

Sophiedotty · 24/09/2013 02:07

Sorry I meant every 12 week trims not 8 when I get my highlights done. I used to get a cut an blow dry every 8 weeks then highlights the next time. It will also save me money by getting 4 trims a year. I've grown it before but I'd say it will be 2 or more years to get it how I want.

I am old so can't have too long hair but no way will I have short hair until I really, really have to when I am very old!

I have had a longish bob for a couple of years but have now grown it down to past my shoulders and it is layered with a fringe.

Sadly it is not fashionable but the most flattering style on me is a mid length farrah fawcett!

I don't flick the layers out, though. It looks horrible if I curl inwards, kind of like an Aniston layer cut and I don't like that on me.

I'm just going to grow it some more with longer layers.

I use argan oil from the pounshop, it's fab!

I'm dreading the short when I'm old too. I lost a lot of my hair after I had my girls & have been diagnosed with Androgenic Alopecia. The only way to get my hair or look decent is to dry it straight & use my ghd's. The front is very thin & I can't leave or curly the length it is as it just hangs at the front.
I'm hoping if I get it long again I can leave it curly as it's such a pita blow drying it all the time.
When my hair was 'normal' I hated it curly but I wish now it was like it used to be.
Luckily I can do my hair so no one notices but it just doesn't go right like it used to as my hair is much thinner.
I like to tie it up to or twist it up which is the benefit of linger hair.

I've been taking Berroca daily for nearly 3 mths now & I'm pretty sure my hair ( & nails for that matter) has grown at a much faster rate than usual.

I colour my hair ( prob too much) so it can be quite dry, however I only go to the hairdressers a few times a year for a trim & I've learned to only have about half an inch off, if that each time. Otherwise if it gets really straggly in between appointments I'll just snip the very ends of myself. I've also learned not to have layers again! My hair is now about a few inches past my shoulders.

Yonihadtoask · 24/09/2013 13:05

I haven't had mine cut for 7 months now - as am growing it

The regular 'trims' made it seem like it took forever to get any length whatsoever.

However I have booked in for a tidy up this week. I need it.

JosieUp · 24/09/2013 13:35

Always tell the hairdresser you want to grow your hair and to take off as little as possible. Mine usually gets to a stage whereby it's straggly and really needs a trim. But you really don't need to go that frequently - 3 or 4 times a year!

As for products, I know you can get hair growth accelerators but whether they work I don't know!

PrimalLass · 24/09/2013 14:15

I am trying too. I am used to a short graduated bob and it is driving me crazy having a lump of hair at the neckline. I may yet cave and have it cut again.

Biotin works on hair and nails tablets from health shop

Sophiedotty · 26/09/2013 15:22

I've heard of that & Silica but I know Silica is expensive. I will look for some Biotin thanks.

Another one growing my hair, Ive never had it longer than bra strap length which is where its at now.

Its more the layers and the god awful fringe thats growing out so I have these big blocks of short hair at the front which are jaw line length I hate them and never know what to do with themConfused

I use argan oil shampoo and cond. and give it a coconut oil treatment every month or so which really helps and it smells loooovely!

applecrumbleandcream · 26/09/2013 18:37

Primalass I am exactly the same. Have been used to a stylish graduated bob for years and now have hair that just looks like it's in no style at all. It's just touching shoulder length at the moment and at that awkward stage where it's not in a style any more even when it's blow dried and just flicks out. I think I'm gonna cave in and book for the chop again...

lifesgreatquestions · 26/09/2013 19:26

I went from a short bob to hair below my shoulders in 18 months, I used conditioning masks daily and got regular trims. There were difficult weeks when I grew through awkward phases but I'm glad I did. Good luck OP!

dogrilla · 26/09/2013 20:58

But when you grow your hair after years of it being short, do you ever get used to it? I've been growing mine but cannot bear the feel of it flapping around my shoulders. It feels lank and drab and I end up just wearing it up. Do you turn a corner with it or just go for the chop?

poppingin1 · 26/09/2013 23:01

I started growing my hair almost 3 years ago when I became pregnant. I thought I would take advantage of the pregnancy hormones that make hair grow faster than usual and the distraction of pregnancy meant that any time I felt the obsessive tendency to cut it, I could distract myself with more fun and interesting pregnancy stuff Grin

My hair is naturally curly and I only cut it about twice a year. I cut it myself as hairdressers always take too much off and I know how to do some basic hair cuts like layering.

If you don't heat style your hair (I blow dry mine after putting in leave in conditioner but not to straighten it) and you protective style a few days a week, you shouldn't need to trim very often as your ends wont dry out and split very much.

Its a myth that you need to trim regularly. As long as you prevent split or dry ends from damaging styling methods you shouldn't have any problems. For me I protective style by putting my hair up in a loose bun for some days a week and don't shampoo my ends to prevent them drying.

scarlet76 · 27/09/2013 07:11

I have a short graduated bob. Have had for some years. Thinking I would like to grow into a longer graduated bob where the length at the front is just touching the tops of my shoulders. It just depends whether I can stand the inbetween stage!!!

I grew mine, started about 4 years ago after developing alopecia areata as an emergency strategy to cover bald patches. It grew back, but I decided to keep growing it. I get it trimmed every 10-12 weeks, tge ends do get dry and tangly, maybe because I swim quite a bit (I use masque on it in the pool). The longest I have let it get is bra strap length, I've just had about 3" lopped off that as it was very straggly. I have had a fringe cut in and grown out again twice in that time.

Mine's wavy, I can blow dry or dry naturally, it's in good condition but flyaway. I use silicone/SLS free products and Lush Henna for colour, also a Lush hair mask once a week or so. I try to only shampoo the roots. I love the feeling of it cascading over my shoulders but have to wear it up in warm/hot weather or I overheat, and on windy days as it goes wild and blows in my face. Definitely higher maintenance than when it was short, but I like it. Also am mid 40s and realise that once it starts going grey it is likely I will want to go short, so making the most of it.
