bikini bra tops for two years olds

Why is it impossible to buy bikini bottoms for little girls that don't come with a bikini top? They don't need a bikini top. They don't have any bosums.

I only wore bikini bottoms when I was little, until I was ten or eleven. But I can't find anywhere where I can buy just the bottoms separately.

Does this mean I am the only person in the world who finds something horrible about very small girls in bra tops? Is the only answer to buy her a swimsuit?

Of course little girls don't need bra tops until they start developing, I too didn't bother with them utnil that age or nearly. But I don't recall Mum ever buying just bikini bottoms, they seemed to come as a set, and I rarely bothered with the top part. It was more of a hassle than it was worth, in those pre-Lycra days, as it just rode up or drooped, there being nothing to fill the top and keep it in place. .

However, nowadays people have weird ideas. Dd wore ds's outgrown washable swim nappy until she was toilet trained, and everyone assumed that she was a boy, and I got funny looks when I explained that she was a girl. Very occasionally people commented on the fact that she wasn't wearing a girl's swimsuit - ie not covering her chest in some way.

I hate these sexualising little toddlers and then people wonder why their kids grow up so fast..tut tut

donnie · 24/06/2006 21:45

what is wrong with one piece costumes?

Gillian76 · 24/06/2006 21:45

I saw them in Italy last year. Just the pants and a head band!

I worry about the sun though...

Marne · 24/06/2006 21:47

Boots just sell the bottoms.

When i was little i did'nt wear anything.

colditz · 24/06/2006 21:49

Stick her in a pair of shorts. I used to walk around topless until mum told me it was time to start covering up - and i was about 9, so it was time to start covering up.

I hate bikini tops on little girls. It implies that they actually have something there!

FlameBoo · 24/06/2006 21:52

DD is 3 and doesn't tend to wear anything!! The second she gets wet in a swimming costume/bikini she says it feels naaaaaaaasty and takes it off.

Yes, there is the possibility that some creepy guy with a camera could be on the beach, but I am not going to stop her running around with no inhibitions whilst she is still young enough to enjoy it.

If she'd keep the bottoms on, then I'd just buy her a set and just use the bottom half.

crunchie · 24/06/2006 21:52

It is really hard as I feel the same tbh, BUT dear MIL has bought my girls 2 bikinis (they are 5 and 7) and I have banned them from wearing them for the past couple of years. However they finally WANT to wear them, they don't want to do just bottoms, and so they are wearing them. They have got suits too which I prefer, but fr mucking about in teh garden I am letting them wear the bikinis

tortoise · 24/06/2006 21:53

My DD1 wears a swimming costume so that top half is a bit more protected from the sun.ds's have to wear t-shirts,again cos of the sun.
Would cost me a fortune in cream to cover 4 of them without tops on!

stitch · 24/06/2006 22:20

if she is two, then just stick a swim nappy on. thats enough

or buy boys trunks.

lanismum · 24/06/2006 22:25

not too keen on bikini tops on little girls, i just put a swim nappy and t shirt on my dd on the beach, and a costume for in the pool.

motherinferior · 25/06/2006 11:38

I bought DD1, who is five, a two-piece the other day. I realised that actually having an all in one is pretty absurd too. But I absolutely insisted on it being a tankini-ish one, not one of those vile baby bra things. It's just like an ordinary swimsuit with the middle missing.

In fact I then went back and got one for me

UberCodofWashingFame · 25/06/2006 13:56

i awlasys demanded one
i was about 2 - 5 yrs old when w elive in southern europe
ALWAYS made mum get me a top too
s elf concious so young

I was in H&M today and thought "Oooh oooh ooh Mrs Curly!!!"

They sell just bottoms

MrsCurly · 28/06/2006 09:36

Thanks FlameBoo
Although sadly the H&M here has stopped doing kids clothes.

I went in to town yesterday and got mad again - John Lewis, Gap, Frasers, everywhere only do sets. Even Boots, Marne. Boots had bikini tops with the swim nappies.

If we all hate them, why don't the shops sell them separately? Or is it because we all buy the two pieces and just use the bottoms so the shops don't know or care..

I guess I will just buy a one piece cos I can't face going to the cash till with a bra for my two year old on principle.

I was told by another woman it was inappropriate for my dd (20 mo at the time) to go swimming with just a swim nappy on.

becky, what a loony .

perhaps she'd find this sort of thing more appropriate?

Bozza · 28/06/2006 12:52

I was shocked the other day to find bikini tops for little girls with triangle front pieces and strings to tie at the back and round the neck. Actually like I have. I think I saw some like that on Vertbaudet too. DD's would end up round her neck probably at the back like a cape because of her shape (ie big belly) I am sure. Just like her skirts all end up under her belly.

I think the type MI describes are different. And there are yellowing photos of me on the beach in one like that - it was towelling though, think my Grandma may have made it.
