what it says on tin.

itchy scalp last few days, don't have kids and don't mix with kids much (e.g. not teacher).

could I be sensitive to new shampoo or not? can't be nits can it?

Unlikely I think. Did the itching coincide with new shampoo? It could be that.

SundaySimmons · 21/09/2013 07:20

You would know if you had nits as you can see them, the eggs and the droppings.

Probably a change in the weather or if you have have been somewhere where the heating is on etc.

Try Nizoral

changeforthebetter · 21/09/2013 08:05

Adults can get nits too from hugging someone who has them. Worth combing with a nit comb and a ton of cheap conditioner just to rule. It out. It is like giving your hair a deep conditioning treatment so not a waste of time. I disagree that you can always see nits on yourself easily Hmm

fruitnfibre · 21/09/2013 12:53

Me too but it's just itchy at the back of my head nowhere else
, so I'm thinking it can't be nits as they'd move around the head?
Hopefully I'm not just wishful thinking.

Meglet · 21/09/2013 16:39

And me too. The kids have been nit combed (every week) and are clear. I nitty grittied my hair last week, it pulled out half the hair on my head Sad, it doesn't work for long haired adults does it! It settled down for a couple of days in the week, possibly when I was cold at work, but flared up yesterday after a hairdresser visit.

It's only in one tiny spot too.

nothruroad · 21/09/2013 16:45

I often get a very itchy scalp after taking certain painkillers - could it be something like this?

LamaDrama · 21/09/2013 16:51

I get this if I don't rinse my hair for ages after shampooing.

adagio · 21/09/2013 23:18

Mine has been like it for a while, I have switched to Naked sensitive scalp which I think has helped a bit, but not gone completely. Watching for any other suggestions with interest.

How do I spot nits if I have thick/longish hair? I have a baby, but she is 9 months old and bald so I am confident she doesn't have any Grin

seasalt · 21/09/2013 23:52

Have you been eating sugary food?

fruitnfibre · 22/09/2013 08:03

Oh yes I am very aware that I eat too much sugar - diet yogurts, chocolate, breakfast cereal. I have been looking into reducing sugar.... Start every Monday!!

alemci · 22/09/2013 08:14

I think it could be change of weather, over build up of products in your hair. i get itchy scalp sometimes and get paranoid about nits.

loulou2012 · 22/09/2013 08:25

I recently had this same thing super itchy scalp and no nits, happened to pop into the hairdressers and they suggested using joico (never heard of before) they seem like treatment products I followed his instructions on using them and my scalp is now back to normal -he said it was due to product build up & incorrect products (admittedly I just normally grab whatever is on offer at boots).

MissDD1971 · 22/09/2013 16:06

loulou2012 thanks for that - will try that and it could well be product build up as been experimenting a bit lately.

its calmed down now anyway.

I eat a bit of sugar anyway (bad me) so I know its not that as not eaten any more.

Jemster · 28/09/2013 12:04

Meglet did you find out what was causing this? I started getting an itchy head last night and mine too is only in o e tiny spot. It feels like an insect bite kind of itch. Nits crossed my mind but surely it would be itchy all over the head?

Meglet · 28/09/2013 12:12

jemster no, I have no idea. My scalp was just itchy in one place. There was no sign of nits but I nitty-grittied again anyway (another plug hole full of hair!), and used a basic anti-dandruff shampoo. I'd been using T-Gel but I wonder if it was too strong. It settled down after last weekend and has been fine ever since.

I wonder if it's stress related.

Jemster · 28/09/2013 12:21

Thanks Meglet, stress would definitely make sense as I have had the week from hell! I didn't realise stress could cause itching. I think where i've itched it so hard it's got sore which makes it even more itchy!

valiumredhead · 28/09/2013 15:48

Loreal elvive shampoo, dark blue bottle with orange lid will sort you out.

valiumredhead · 28/09/2013 15:49

Btw back of the neck is classic spot for nits !

Meglet · 29/09/2013 20:02

I've decided it can't be nits. I've nitty grittied again today and it's even worse this evening, my scalp feels sore Sad. There's no sign of anything when I comb either me or the dc's hair. I have a feeling the conditioner is irritating my scalp. I'm going back to just anti-dandruff shampoo tomorrow.

Might try the loreal elvive brand.

WildThongsHeartString · 29/09/2013 20:12

meglet tgel is very strong so might be irritating your scalp, it doesn't suit everybody. You mentioned conditioner, it's quite common for residue conditioner to make the scalp itchy. I found that by conditioning the lengths only (keeping it away from my head as much as possible) made a huge difference to itching patches on my scalp.

I didn't know about the link to eating sugar, learn something else on here everyday!

valiumredhead · 30/09/2013 00:40

I doubt you'll need a conditioner with the Loreal shampoo but if you do try the red elvive one for coloured hair, it's the only one that doesn't makes me scratch.

Whitecat · 30/09/2013 09:43

Try SLS free shampoo and silicone free conditioner and your scalp is bound to improve. Have a search on here you'll find a few threads discussing it. It's def worth a try. The silicones in styling products irritate too. Good luck finding the cause, it's horrible having an itchy head.
