Tartan skirt?

Good or bad?

I bought one and I love it but DP keeps saying it's awful and I look like a Canadian school girl when I wear it.

good if you 'love it', who cares what anyone else thinks!

I also want one...i have my own clan tartan so not sure if i should buy a 'proper' kilt and be done with it or just a cheaper flippy skirt type thing.
I love tartan but my personal style can be quite grunge.
What are you wearing it with? If you're pairing it with hair bunchs and a lollipop it might look a bit Britney.

Tartan is "in". Along with tweed. Ignore your dp - I predict that the streets will be awash with it this winter and your dp will become quite acclimatised to you in it.

Skinheadmermaid - why not order a length of your clan tartan and get it made up into the type of skirt you want - either by yourself or a dressmaker?

Back to OP - Canadian school girl? That's quite specific, isn't it? My first cultural reference would probably either be punk or Cher from "Clueless". Why Canadian exactly?

Shops seem to be full of them. Saw a nice one by Henry Holland in House of Fraser that I might buy....

Not getting the Canadian connection either. I'm guessing all pleated skirts could have a school girl connotation, but that's no reason not to wear one.

I love them. There's a Mint Velvet one that I am tempted to purchase. Funnily it's one thing I remember my ExH suggesting that I wear, and he usually took no interest in my clothes at all....

Also am intrigued by the Canadian reference.

I can wear several tartans (if I wanted to) from both my parents' ancestory.
But my favourite is Black watch (and it's one of the popular fashion ones too).

I saw a nice shirt/blouse but DD said it looked "like Grandads pyjamas" Grin

I'm pleased Tartan is fashionable again. I love it. I have this www.polyvore.com/red_tartan_belt_skater_dress/thing?id=49724480 sold out, so I can't be the only person to like it Grin haven't worn it yet. Planning on wearing a white shirt under it, might look a little prim or uniform but at 39 I don't think I will be confused with a school girl.

any good?

sweetheart · 20/09/2013 14:25

lots here

sweetheart · 20/09/2013 14:26

a few more here

sweetheart · 20/09/2013 14:32

Sorry, should have read that you were asking for thoughts on them!!! I have a tartan skirt which I've had for several years and I love it. I get lots of complements on it. Only wear it in the winter when I can wear it with leggings and shoe boots - I don't have the legs to go bare!

50ShadesOfMaybe · 20/09/2013 14:32

Those last few, sweetheart, which were Red Herring at Debenhams were the ones I mean when I said Henry Holland at House of Fraser. Doh! Some of the Asos ones are nice too.

BlondieBear · 20/09/2013 19:12

I wore it all day today! And got lots of compliments from everyone at work so clearly my DP is misguided. I wore it with a charcoal grey jumper and biker boots

I'm not sure why DP decided Canadian, generally if he's going to say something negative he tends to make it as random and strange as possible. I think he actually believes it softens the blow.

So apparently tartan pleated skirts for school girls are more popular in Canada? He may just be making this up though.
