Questions about your winter coat

First do you wear the same winter coat every yr ?

Do you have just one winter coat or several for different occasions e.g long smart coat for Sunday outings, puffer coat for school drop off ,
leather jacket for going to the shops etc ?

Where'S best to get a winter coat from?

Whats the best type of winter coat? ive gone through the down feather coat, to heavy sheepskin, to classic M and S long coat, just can't seem to find the right one.

Ideally it seems i need a smart one and a more casual one but can't seem to get one that's warm enough of classy/fashionable.

Hello, this thread is a little old now and some of the links are out of date. Take a look at this handy page for a round up of Mumsnetters' favourite winter coats.

I've worn the same winter coat for the last 3 years (well, this winter will be its 3rd winter). It's a navy wool peacoat extremely similar to this one. When I don't need to be smart or very warm, I wear a black leather biker jacket, which is lined and made of good thick leather so really warm as it cuts out all the wind.

For your smart coat, I'd say get one that covers your bum and is made of at least 80% wool, and it should last a good few years.

I used to live in an extremely cold country and wore a floor-length down feather one with a furry hood - so cosy.

snoozysleeper · 18/09/2013 16:20

I have several coats Blush

I have a beautiful wool dark grey full length one from reiss, I wear this for formal evenings out in winter/ going somewhere nice like Xmas markets

I have a cobalt blue wool coat that sits just below the hips from ted baker. I wear this one a lot but mostly during autumn/early Winter.

I have a patterned SOS Jenson coat which is very practical, wear during day esp in Autumn.

I also have a plain black coat water/wind proof, fleece-lined, belted and with hood. This is my go-to for depths of winter. I picked up from tk maxx, no idea who it is made by.

BornToFolk · 18/09/2013 16:25

I've got a waterproof, down filled, long black coat from Lands End that I bought for watching DS play football. However, it is so warm and comfortable that I ended up wearing it most of last winter, despite it not being at all stylish. It's basically like wearing a duvet!

I could do with a stylish, waterproof, warm coat for work but I really doubt that such a thing exists.

snoozysleeper · 18/09/2013 16:26

So smart coat I would advocate predominanty wool and at least 3/4 length.

For a casual coat, something practical really!

I hope that helps!

filee777 · 18/09/2013 16:28

I've just bought myself a very smart winter coat from Joe Browns :) Its coming tomorrow and I am very excited.

I have also bought 3 new dresses, 2 new tunics and some leggings.

BirdyBedtime · 18/09/2013 16:30

i have a smart coat for work/shopping trips etc - the last one I had lasted for 3 years and i've just invested in a new one from Lands End which will hopefully last as long.

I also have a cosy waterproof Trespass jacket for school run/winter walks etc. Have had it for a few years too.

Couldn't afford to buy a new one each year.

carrie74 · 18/09/2013 16:41

Loads of coats bought over the years to be used for different occasions:

Leather jacket (newest addition): cool autumn/spring days and summer evenings, casual only.

Various blazers: as above, but can be worn for work too.

Waterproof: knee length, effective hood, worn when raining but not freezing (I've got a Merrell Wakefiled, but as I understand it, an insulated version would also be warm, so usable in depths of winter).

Fashion: smart grey Zara coat, for town and office only, warm enough, but wouldn't withstand coldest days.

Padded coat: seems waterproof enough, and lasted through last winter (although thinking of replacing this year as I've had it for about 5 years now and fancy a change).

Also other old ones, padded gilet, ski jacket, v old waterproofs etc.

So smart one: go for high wool content and a good shape.
Casual: I'm angling for the Aigle Cuckmere this year (and it's so expensive, it'll be used for work too on v cold days).

cloutiedumpling · 18/09/2013 16:48

Has anyone seen any really nice long coats? I need a new one to replace one that I've worn for the last three winters and all the ones in the shops seem to be quite short. I feel the cold and want something that is below my knees.

BellaVita · 18/09/2013 16:49

I have a few coats too.

whiteskylight · 18/09/2013 16:51

I have a Didrikson warm waterproof coat which I wore most of the time last year as it was so cold. I got it last year and expect to be wearing it for a few more years.

I have a few smart wool coats for wearing when going out, about three that I've picked up in sales over the years. Some of them are about six years old, but don't get worn that often so are in good condition. They aren't as warm as my Didrikson coat but I tend to wear them when I'll be indoors most of the time.

mysticminstrel · 18/09/2013 16:54

I've got a 3/4 black wool coat for smart.

A navy blue parka for school run/outdoor activities/should I ever need to invoke my zombie plan.

A superdry jacket (I know, I know) for when it's wet but not hot (so basically, spring and autumn).

KatieScarlett2833 · 18/09/2013 17:09

I've just ordered the White Stuff Woodland parka in navy at 20% off. Hope it's as warm as it looks Smile

Gunznroses · 18/09/2013 17:23

ooh! lots of replies thank you. I think the mistake ive been making is thinking one coat will suit all occasions. borntofolk i think i've got the same coat you described from Lands end, oh its marvellous isn't ?
but it seems out of place when i wear it to formal occasions, actually it is out of place Grin so it looks like i now have to look for a coat as warm as the LE one but formal, now where does that exist ? am i right in also thinking ideally :
A long formal coat - Wool
a short 3/4 length formal coat
A casual long coat -waterproofroof/down feathered
A short casual coat - leather/sheepskin etc

I just got a lovely deep purple one from TK Maxx.

IsabelleRinging · 18/09/2013 17:31

I have a wardrobe full of coats because once they go out of fashion they usually still have lots of wear in them, but I end up buying a new one because I feel dated otherwise but can't bear to get rid of good clothes. The ones I still wear often are a long black down puffa for school run, a smart wool coat for weekends, a waterproof walking type jacket for days out/winter walks etc, and a suede jacket for casual evening wear etc and a faux fur 3/4 length coat for whenever I fancy it.

LaFataTurchina · 18/09/2013 17:38

warmest but casual: my mum's old barbour wax jacket (need to re-wax it though)

smarter ones: navy woolen paddington bear coat from asda + grey river island trench (neither are that warm though)

waterproof: beige jacket from H&M, can roll it up into my handbag

I wouldn't mind something that is both smart and warm though. Maybe a grey wool type thing.

Ilovemydogandmydoglovesme · 18/09/2013 17:43

I seem to have collected several coats over the years. Grin

A gorgeous long wool black fitted formal coat
A long wool red formal coat
A midthigh white swing wool coat
A grey fitted wool jacket
A light green cotton parka
A navy quillted jacket
A brown lightweight waxed jacket
A burgundy showerproof jacket
A green heavyweight all weather shooting coat that gets worn every winter
A teal showerproof smart mac
A green quilted bodywarmer
A red puffy bodywarmer
A navy heavy bodywarmer

Think that's it.

I love coats. Blush

Phaedra11 · 18/09/2013 17:53

I think you need at least two winter coats. I have a coat from Mango which is cute and smart (bought it last year and was delighted to rediscover how lovely it is) and also a Landsend Stadium coat which is great for extreme weather. Between them they cover most eventualities but I also have a Top Shop waxed parka and a Boden velvet coat (bought too long ago to be linked to and rarely worn now).

I think I need a lightweight raincoat too. The stadium coat is waterproof but v warm.

BreakingBadger · 18/09/2013 19:57

I have two winter coats.

A Topshop navy duffle
A Zara cream down coat with furry hood

Plus a navy raincoat, a black leather biker, a fake fur jacket and three blazers in navy, black and grey.

I think it's about right tbh, I have a coat for every occasion/season. I don't have a smart smart winter coat but I don't need one tbh, the navy duffle goes over party dresses and heels perfectly well and I don't have a job

Debmeds50 · 20/09/2013 22:40

I have just bought a Didrikson Taylor after coveting it for so long. I need a seriously warm, wind/waterproof coat to wear whilst watching DS play football. I got mine from Laws of Kirkcudbright. Much cheaper than anywhere else & their customer service is amazing. It's a practical coat for serious adverse weather & with the Swedish Didrikson you get a quality coat fit for purpose. I am actually looking forward to wearing it when the weather turns seriously cold/wet

PestoSwimissimos · 21/09/2013 09:47

Debs, what's the sizing like? I'm a 12 but usually size up in coats, to allow for thick layers underneath. Thinking of going for the 38?

sedgieloo · 21/09/2013 09:53

debs I think I want one too! It's a lot of money for me and not being able to try it I am hesitating no end. Which colour did you go for? I'm a size 10 most places but tall, any thoughts appreciated with you having one yourself.

noddyholder · 21/09/2013 10:13

I am after a tweed or herringbone coat has anyone seen any?
