If you are in your 30s where do you shop and what will you be wearing this winter?

Need a bit of inspiration. Fed up of the high street, seems to be so much tat around. Where should I be shopping? And what should I be wearing this winter?

Am early 30s, 5 ft 7 and size 8. I live rurally so don't tend to wear anything too dressy and like the classic look (think Kate Middleton)
Thanks

I'm similar to you in age and being rural!... I like fat face tunics and leggings with chunky boots (Clarks have some lovely biker type ones) and mistral clothes are also lovely. Boden and joules are not too bad, some bits worse than others.

Woolovers have some excellent quality jumpers.

I also have a browse on Asos for style and fashion ideas, then I tend to source similar bits from places where the quality is better and will last longer.

I also buy loads from eBay!

I love next skinny jeans in dark indigo. Very flattering.

AnnaBanana101 · 18/09/2013 14:37

Thanks - I try to avoid tunics over leggings as my bum and thighs are actually one of my better features so no point in covering them up!

I'm a similar age as you and live rurally although sadly not a size 8. Were I a size 8, I'd wear whatever the hell I liked.

I wear a lot of Toast and Cos with a fair bit of Jigsaw and Boden. I like Topshop jeans, although theyre not as good as they were.. this year I'm going to be living in my new Reiss peacoat with skinnies, ankle boots and chunky knits.

I am more urban than you but a similar size. I like Zara and H&M and this year will be wearing skinnies in grey and black, black ankle boots or high tops, oversized slouchy knits layered with scarves, pendants and several non matching bracelets with an outsized mans watch. For work I will be wearing lots of short a line dresses with primark fleece lined tights and Russell and Bromley long flat suede boots finished with a navy wool double breasted Zara coat. Handbags will be Mulberry, Marc by Marc Jacobs & Rebecca Minkoff in Neutral colours.

Late 30s, size 10. I've bought most of my clothes other than standard basics from TK Maxx for the last couple of years. The odd bit from Zara or John Lewis. New Look for jeans. I used to buy loads from Oasis, but find their styling too young most of the time now- too many holes cut out of otherwise nice dresses, that kind of thing. Also used to love Monsoon but I think they've gone downhill a lot. I've found it really hard to find clothes I'm enthusiastic about recently actually. I love clothes, love shopping for them, but I find there's very little around at the moment that isn't either too teenager-y or too mumsy, or looks nice from a distance but turns out to be cheap and nasty up close. Or too bloody expensive, to be honest. If I was prepared to pay £100 per item I'd have no problems.

Should I be wearing scarves? Never been sure how to wear them.

I'm 31, size 8, 5'5". Live rurally, work urbanly Grin Don't need to be smart for work though. I like simple, clean styles, don't really wear scarves or jewellery unless they're functional. This winter I'm wearing:

close-fitting merino and cashmere crewneck jumpers (just bought a gorgeous stripy one from Gap)
skinny jeans (cos I'm boring)
ankle-length black skinny trousers
black jersey pencil skirts
above knee slouchy day dresses (with black opaques and biker boots or flats)
pointy flats
black zip-back biker boots
black leather biker jacket
navy wool pea coat

I shop anywhere and everywhere that makes stuff out of decent material (cotton/viscose/wool/cashmere). Love Whistles, Cos, Comptoir des Cottonniers (sp?), ASOS v useful for seeing what's in fashion, Gap sometimes, Uniqlo jeans and cashmere, Topshop for day dresses, Boden mostly not my style but love some of their knitwear, love Jack Wills for coats and knitwear as long as it's not logo-ed.

Pinupgirl · 18/09/2013 15:37

Well as suggested by my user name I dress mainly in a pinup/rockabilly style. I shop mainly online-faves include Collectf,Lindybop and Lady vintage. This winter I will be wearing tea dresses with cardigans, seamed tights or opaques, plaid dresses or twinsets and a pencil skirt.

Deathbyladybirds · 18/09/2013 18:17

this video is good for scarves

JemimaMuddledUp · 18/09/2013 18:43

I end to shop on the high street, so no secret shopping tips from me I'm afraid.

I am 35, 5'6", size10/12. I live in a rural village.

I tend to wear straight leg jeans, plain layering t-shirts or vests, fitted cardis. All quite neutral. Accessorised with bright scarves and pearl stud earrings. On my feet I wear ballet flats, flat knee high boots or wedge heel lace up ankle boots. I have a double breasted wool coat to throw on over the top if it is cold, or a quilted jacket for a less smart look.

mewkins · 18/09/2013 19:33

Same age, size and location to you! I have bought some nice jumpers from tk maxx, they have a good selection at the mo. Also wear a lot of above the knee corduroy skirts im wintery colours; Gap and Uniqlo cords and skinny jeans and a variety of boots. I am not good at wintet dresses as I need and extra layer over the top and they often don't sit right!
Fat face have some great jumpers in at the moment too (I am a sucker for fairisle!) and there are some decent things (casual shirts etc) if you look harf enough in M&S.

MrsDesperado · 18/09/2013 19:50

nextyear where will you get your a-line dresses from?Your wardrobe sounds lovely.

BillStickersIsInnocent · 18/09/2013 20:19

Yes I'd like to know too please, I need some more dresses for work.

I'm 34, live and work rurally but need to be fairly smart. For work I wear stuff like:

Slim leg trousers, silky top, cropped jacket, pointy flats
Or above with fitted sweater
Silk skirt, cropped jacket, opaques, brogues or heeled ankle
boots
Shift dresses, opaques, ankle boots
Wide leg trousers, fitted sweater

Home is:
Slim leg jeans, ankle boots or supergas, big wooly jumper
Mini dresses, opaques, ankle boots

Last purchases have been from Jigsaw, H & M, Boden, Jaegar, Mint Velvet, Gap, Whistles

Also like Cos, Toast, Sandwich, some Zara, Hobbs, Mango

angeltulips · 18/09/2013 23:41

33, 5'10, size 6-8 - v urban but rarely wear heels due to hypermobility (need orthotics) if that helps?!

My daily uniform is:

  • skinny jeans/leather trousers (latest acquisition a navy not-skintight pair which I love)/cigarette pants
  • cashmere jumpers
  • plain vest tops in neutral colours
  • blazers
  • knee high boots/ankle boots/monk shoes/ballet shoes (not really supposed to but I adore them)
  • pearl studs, top knot

Shop at reiss, cos, & other stories, acne (OBSESSED W ACNE tho is v spenny), vince, joseph, topshop, iris & ink, paul & joe, APC, urban outfitters, sometimes at gap & banana republic if sizing runs small enough. Swear by uniqlo for all basics.

Shops I d

angeltulips · 18/09/2013 23:43

Sorry - shops I don't like but others do: Zara, massimo dutti, jigsaw, Karen millen

angeltulips · 18/09/2013 23:45

Oh and approx once a year I go to my favourite shop in the world, scanlan & Theodore in melbourne, and have a big spending spree on items that inevitably become the mainstays of my outfits for the next year or so

(Should pt out that I don't fly specifically to shop! Have family there.)
