Foundation and flaky skin

I'm 49 and don't really wear a lot of makeup, however, these days I think I could do with some tbh. I have psoriasis, so have to be careful what I use. I recently got some advice about brands on here and went to a large department store and asked them to tell me which colour I would need. I was recommended Clinique CC or another of theirs (can't remember which at the moment).

The problem is my skin isn't really dry on my face, but when I wear foundation the skin on my nose looks flaky. It's not like psoriasis flakes, just like dry flaky skin, but I never notice it any other time.

I do use moisturiser every day, at the moment I'm using Eucerin because it doesn't irritate my skin. I can't use mascara every day, because either it or the wipes I use to remove it cause the skin around my eyes to become dry and sore - this IS psoriasis. I just want to look a bit better than I do some of the time, particularly when I'm working, so would like to wear a little foundation, some blusher, sometimes mascara, not much more tbh.

Any advice what I can put on my nose to stop the flaking?

Thanks Thanks

Do you use a primer? Some foundations do sort of cake, even with primer though. It can be trial and error to see what works for you. I use mineral foundation to avoid any caking and flaking.

Can you exfoliate the bits that aren't psoriasis?

loopyloou · 17/09/2013 18:31

I haven't been exfoliating due to treating my skin as gently as possible. I have also never used a primer, not sure what they are for Blush

What is the difference between mineral foundation and cream foundation?

Oil cleansing (ocm) sorted out my flaky skin, it's very gentle if you use just a single oil like coconut or almond.

I have psoriasis on my face and use Estee Lauder Double Wear foundation and it hides the flaky patches well

tinysleepy · 17/09/2013 20:44

I would second Estée Lauder Double Wear. I have lots of flakes due to quite severe & long standing rosacea.
I didn't get on with Eucerin - make me sore, greasy & didn't moisurize at all.
I use cetaphil cleanser & moisuriser (from amazon or big branches of boots) + double wear & my skin has honestly never been better.
I HATED mineral foundation but persevered for years as thought nothing else would suit, but now love double wear.

Great, thanks for the tip about EL Double Wear, I'll have a look for it. Also the moisturiser mentioned.

I have coconut and almond oil, so will have a go at oil cleansing - I've tried before but my skin felt quite tight afterwards.

I've switched to Avene for cleansing and moisturising. The skin care specialist in my local Boots was really helpful and guided me to the right products in the range

ElBombero · 18/09/2013 22:24

Lizzy can you tell me about oil cleansing? X

LizzyDay · 19/09/2013 14:43

Oil cleansing is basically using an oil instead of a cleanser, and wiping it off with a clean flannel or muslin soaked in hot/warm water. It can be more gentle than a lot of cleansers, and oil is very effective at removing most makeup, grease and dirt.

If you google 'oil cleansing method' there are loads of sites on it. There are lots of different preferences re oils etc - I prefer just to use a single oil like coconut oil as it's more gentle but lots of people swear by using a mix of castor oil and another oil.

I use cut up muslins and wash them after each use, it's important to only use clean cloths as you're effectively steaming your pores open a bit when you wipe/rinse. I used to get flaky skin on the side of my nose and front of my cheeks, but don't any more.

I like Estee Lauder DW too, another good one I've discovered recently is Boots Instant Radiance - good coverage and quite glowy.

Re tightness, if you like you can put a tiny bit more of the oil on your clean skin as a moisturiser, or use your normal moisturiser.

SofaCanary · 19/09/2013 16:16

When my skin is acting up, it's dry and prone to flakes especially when I'm using retin A, the easiest thing I've found is a sweep of Jane Iredale pressed mineral base.

It doesn't cover massively but it does a nice, none irritating job of evening out skin tone without highlighting the nasty flakies.
