Enough is enough and I'm growing my nails after 40 years of biting them so I have nice nails for Christmas. Anyone else joining me ? And would those of you who have kicked this horrible habit mind giving us the benefit of your wisdom please ?

I stopped last month and am already seeing progress. Having trawled the old threads I have Burt's Bees lemon butter cuticle cream, Flexitol cutical cream, Denny Leighton nail file, Seche Vite top coat and found some Sally Hansen cuticle remover from a previous attempt.

So am now pretty skint but seeing bits of white nail in the first of of pretty much ever!

Good for you. I've struggled with this too. Chew gum! And paint the nails. Good luck!

Grotbagstwin · 17/09/2013 23:22

I stopped biting mine a few years ago and as you are I watched the white tips grow then once there was a bit of white I started painting them so I noticed the colour if I went to bite them.
Be warned it may be the start of an extensive varnish collection! Grin

I am reformed after 25 years of biting. I found it to be circular - once they're long I don't want to mess/bite but when they're in that in between phase I am constantly neatening. Clear nail polish and having a nail file handy helped.

I've gone the other way, I'm clipping mine often enough that there's little to bite. I realised it was the annoyance of nails longer than my fingers that made me bite them, I hate them catching, scratching or bending back.

Good to hear people have kicked the habit. I don't want them very long, just so that they look normal.

I'm looking forward to my first bit of coloured nail varnish, they are bit short yet though. I have started looking at varnishes, good thing Christmas is coming!

I find getting mine shellac-ed really helps...I'm a reformed biter (ish! My right thumb still gets bitten!) but having shellac on there makes me not bite...and by the time it comes off they look much better.

Good luck!

Agree with Jewels - although I do my own gel polish at home.
Also agree with Grotbags - I have a box full of colours! Blush

All you need is a jar of coconut oil. Keep it on the side and every time you pass it rub some into your nails. It stimulates growth and makes your nails into lovely condition. No need for any expensive treatments.

My friend is buying the Red Carpet kit and has kindly said she will do my nails for me. I'm onto week 8 and can't believe the difference in them. I'm booking to have a manicure in a couple of weeks time as would like someone to do my cuticles and shape them properly.

I love the smell of coconut oil so will grab a jar of that. Thank you all for the encouragement. I'm getting to the stage where I don't actually want them too much longer as I think they will get in the way.

To anyone else thinking about it, do it ! It's made such a difference and I love looking at my nails now. The thing which worked for me is getting into a routine of applying stuff to my cuticles and hands regularly. Instead of picking or biting I massage the cuticle and nail instead .

Thats great! I will also get the coconut oil I think, my nails are nice now but the skin around them is so dry
