With the weather turning colder, skin is likely to be suffering a bit more than usual. So I thought we could do with a thread of sage advice on how to take care of your skin and keep it looking fabulous.

Here's what works for me (they are all free or very cheap Smile):

  • Sleep. Simple as that. As much as you can manage, as often as you can manage
  • Water. As for sleep
  • Vegetables. As for sleep and water
  • Caffeine. The opposite advice! Cut it out if you can
  • Alcohol. Ditto. Or at least neck tons of water alongside it and give yourself more alcohol-free days in the week
  • Ciggies. Pack 'em in. It really does make a difference. I stopped in June and by the end I was down to about 2 fags a week. I still noticed a difference after quitting completely I think
  • SPF. I've only been using a daily SPF for about 2 years (I'm 33) so I've yet to see if it works long term but it keeps coming up as one of the very best things you can do to prevent signs of ageing
  • Oil cleansing. Works a treat on my dry and dehydrated skin that is prone to flakiness. I take make-up off with sunflower oil or coconut oil every night, removing with a warm wet flannel. I just use rosewater on a cotton pad in the morning
  • Find a moisturiser that your skin loves and stick to it. For me, it's cheap and cheerful Astral, morning and night. Lots of love for Nivea too. You definitely don't need to use a fancy pants mega bucks moisturiser.

Looking forward to reading what works for other folks! Grin

Thanks Jemima Smile

BreakingBadger · 16/09/2013 21:23

My top tip is to use either very simple products - oil cleansing if you like it, Astral/Nivea if it suits your skin - or high tech ones. Doesn't need to be expensive to be high tech - just get savvy about ingredients. I've yet to try peels, but I have a salicylic acid cleanser and a hyaluronic acid toner and they both work wonders. Also moisturisers with peptides have a temporary plumping and hence anti aging effect.

JemimaPuddle · 16/09/2013 21:25

You're welcome :)

Would love to know what you think if you try it

Karbea · 16/09/2013 21:27

I'm pretty sure double cleansing had improved my skin beyond recognition.
I also love Clarins exfoliator brightening toner using it daily.

Pumpkintopf · 16/09/2013 21:28

Jemima - Found it on ebay for £16 ish. V tempted to give it a go - still at age nearly 40 getting a few spots every month in chin area, thinking this might help....

JemimaPuddle · 16/09/2013 21:37

The liquid gold or the night cream?

JemimaPuddle · 16/09/2013 21:39

Oops posted too soon. That's what I was like, couple of spots each month on my chin which were sore & left marks which took ages to fade. I've had 1 spot since May when I started using the night cream & liquid gold religiously.

Karbea · 16/09/2013 21:46

I was the same as this too, very red/sore cheeks, spots all along jaw line and one or two painful hormonal spots, touchwood I've currently clear, can't believe how much better my skin is now.

Pumpkintopf · 16/09/2013 21:48

The liquid gold. That sounds brilliant, I've been finding the red marks take longer and longer to fade and only really just clear before the next crop of spots iyswim. Would love to get rid of them altogether.....

JemimaPuddle · 16/09/2013 21:52

I don't mind decanting some of mine into a bottle for you to try? I'd hate for you to spend £16 on my say so

Ruralninja · 16/09/2013 21:55

Inside:
Water, fish oil, home-made juices, multi-vitamins, high strength vitamin D
Outside:
fresh air, exercise, double cleansing, facial oil (e.g. clarins, rosehip, etc), glycolic acid now and again
Cosmetic:
Decent blusher, light foundation

Pumpkintopf · 16/09/2013 21:59

Jemima that is incredibly sweet and lovely of you. Its not all on you, honest, since reading this thread I've googled lots of reviews and beauty blogs who seem fairly unanimous that its good stuff! Going to go click on ebay, can't wait to try it now! Excited!!

JemimaPuddle · 16/09/2013 22:01

I do hope you like it & it works for you.

It does 'tingle' a little when you first use it but that passes after a few seconds and isn't uncomfortable or anything.

SundaySimmons · 16/09/2013 22:02

Madmomma, I agree with you. I have worn a full face of make up for almost forty years, most days and I believe my skin has aged less because of it.

Pumpkintopf · 16/09/2013 22:02

Bought. Happy Smile

On the original subject of the thread - water, lots of it, definitely helps my skin look less dull.

Pumpkintopf · 16/09/2013 22:03

Jemima thankyou, will let you know how I get on Smile

evertonmint · 17/09/2013 08:01

Hydraluron was mentioned - I can second it, enthusiastically. It's sold in Boots.

The redness on my cheeks has really lessened since double cleansing and using Hydraluron and my skin feels much softer. Then moisturiser on top.

I double cleanse with high street products - varying combo of Body Shop Nutriganics Gel Oil, Body Shop Camomile Butter, Superdrug radiance hot cloth and Botanics cream cleanser. Lots of cheap flannels from Wilkos. New cloth every morning, chucked in wash at night.

Go to www.beautymouth.com and find the routines cheat sheet for the full low down.

Eliza22 · 17/09/2013 08:16

SundaySimmons I agree..... Full face of slap has protected my skin from some of the ageing process. My sister is a fresh-faced girl (now 52) who would moan at me for using makeup. She will admit now that I have fewer lines. She's still utterly lovely, of course! Smile

JustBecauseICan · 17/09/2013 08:19

I started the GA stuff with Alpha Gold whatsit, but you can get much more concentrated and efficacious GA (and others) from ebay and/or the Bravura website. Cheap as chips as well. do not eat chips, bad for face

Ditto the hyaluronic acid serum/vit C serum etc.

JemimaPuddle · 17/09/2013 10:01

Just the more concentrated GA is for weekly peels isn't it? Usually a 6 week course? The Alpha liquid gold is for long term use 2 or 3 times a week.
Do Bravura do something like that? I'd be interested to try it although my LG costs me very little and lasts ages.

JustBecauseICan · 17/09/2013 10:39

The GA 30% was a weekly one for 6 weeks yes. Cost about £8 IIRC. Tbh, I didn't notice a difference at all with the LG but did from the go-get the once-weekly one. I have done 2 cycles now, but never get to the 6minutes on wk 6 as it's too stingy!

JemimaPuddle · 17/09/2013 11:05

I guess it depends on what results you want. For me it's keeping pores clean & preventing breakouts so something I use regularly is best for me I think. Any antiageing is a bonus for me.

Lazysuzanne · 18/09/2013 17:29

Madmomma 'Make up protects your skin from the elements' totally agree, I plaster it on (over the sunblock)

And also agree with Madamecasta, I always wear either big shades or a hat with a brim, squinting must be avoided at all costs!
