Hi all,

I've recently been reading about using a combination of oils as a face cleanser? Has anyone tried it and would you recommend it ?
Which oils should I use - I have fairly normal skin and don't have any spots or acne...

Also, where do you buy Argan oil from ??

TIA :)

I use coconut oil- as its a solid I warm it through my hands, then rub over wet skin and wipe off with a damp cloth to remove residue.

I have spot prone skin and I have noticed less blemishes when I use it compared to when I didn't use it.

You can get the 100% pure argan oil at holland and Barrett. I use it as a moisturizer rather than a cleanser. Works wonders

Twinklestein · 10/09/2013 20:59

I can't recommend it highly enough. I've ditched all chemical cleansers & moisturisers, and at 42 I have no lines which I am sure is down to using oils.

I've experimented with different oils & now make my own blend. Avocado oil is nourishing if you get dry skin. Coconut, jojoba oils are lighter. Argan oil, grapeseed oil & rosehip oils are excellent too.

CoffeeTea103 Do you use argan oil as a day or night moisturiser? Does it smell?

Twinklestein do you mix it castor oil ? I was reading that castor oil is the main ingredient in all 'oil face cleansers' and that you're supposed to mix it with other oils based on your skin type...

Thanks all :)

This site is really helpful The Oil Cleansing Method.

Also search for oil cleansing method or OCM on Mumsnet as there are loads of really useful threads.

Good luck!

I love OCM and have been doing it for several years. I'm 43 next week and mum to four dc's aged 24 yrs to 20mths and grandmother to three. I'm told I look nowhere near my age.

I use 75% castor oil (get it from Amazon, much cheaper the H & B) and I top it up with whatever is to hand really. Often grapeseed or almond oil, but sometimes olive oil from the kitchen if that's what I have to hand.

I use it once a day, in the evening, and then moisturise lightly with almond or grapeseed.

Get lots of flannels, I like a clean one everyday, but muslin flannels are my favourite.

CoffeeTea103 · 11/09/2013 13:06

Hi mumstop, yes I use it both as an evening and day moisturizer. It does have a strong smell but as you work it into your skin the smell goes away. During the day , if you feel it's too much, you can add a few drops into your usual daily moisturizer. Either way the benefits are huge. I use the Mia flora range.

Littlepumpkinpie · 11/09/2013 13:25

I have been using it for almost 2 years now and its wonderful. I get my oils from an indian chemist for £3 bottles are twice the size of Holland and barrats too they last ages. Can 100% say try it its so worth it.

Thanks all :)
A few more questions...

  1. am I correct in assuming that I don't need toner after cleaning with oil?

  2. Also, is it true that I shouldn't be using doing ocm every night? certain websites only recommend it 2-3 times a week... then what do you use on other nights?

  3. Do you moisturise after doing ocm ?

I do OCM every night and just splash with cold water in the morning. I don't use tuner afterward, just splash with cold water and use a drop of the oil on damp fingers as moisturiser as needed. I don't have miracle results, but every bit as good as other expensive stuff I've used, and much cheaper. I get castor oil and jojoba oil from Amazon and add tea tree oil and lavender to the mix.

FreeAtLastAtLongLast · 15/09/2013 21:29

I use olive oil to cleanse. Or veg oil if I'm skint Shock I don't use castor oil as I've never had spots. I have dry skin and the oil is wonderful Smile
It removes eye make up really well, but I have to avoid getting oil near my eyelashes in the morning or my mascara doesn't go on well Grin

Avocado oil is also wonderful, but I'm too skint to replace the bottle I've finished! It is also lovely to use on hair overnight before a hair wash. My hair is very dark, it might not be so good on blonde hair!

AlfalfaMum · 16/09/2013 00:39

I tried it a few years back, but got big sore lumpy spots. I tried a few different oil combos, then gave up..maybe I just didn't find the right recipe for me, but about four months I had to give up.

I love REN cleansing balm though. I use that a few times a week for a really deep cleanse.

WafflyVersatile · 16/09/2013 00:44

I did this with castor oil and, I think, almond oil. I massaged it on then took it off with a hot wet cloth. It was ok.

WafflyVersatile · 16/09/2013 00:46

Avocado oil, not almond! I did it for a few weeks. It didn't get rid of blackheads though which is what I was hoping for.
