how would you tie up shoulder-length dense hair other than in a ponytail?

I've masses of hair and the usual hair clips available just can't hold it all.

I'd like to tie up sections (at from my face) or the whole lot, in something other than a ponytail band. Any ideas for clips or other things that can handle dense hair and stay put? I find hair pins hard work.

Braid? There are you tube tutorials if you can't do them yourself yet. I like to do one small braid on each side of my head and then fix them together at the back. Looks nice and stays in place all day easily

I have shoulder length dense hair too and I have been putting my hair up in a Sock bun recently. It looks great and stays in place. Youtube The sock bun method if unsure of how it works, but it takes me 2mins!

I have thick long hair(imagine a horses tail) I find I can put it in a ponytail, wrap my hair in a coil round the band and use these corkscrew spiral clips from Claire's to hold it all in. They've been the only way other than the sock bun I can wear my hair up

All good ideas.

My hair is thick, long, and curly so a pain basically

Anyway my smart/sensible 'up' hairstyle is to first tie it half up half down, then use the 'up' bit to form a section of a braid. Then I stick a nice barette over the hair band at the top of the braid.

something linke this

I have thick hair to just below my shoulders and have been using one of these to do different up styles and to hide elastics.

TripTrapTripTrapOverTheBridge · 08/09/2013 21:18

I wear my curls half up half down with a clip to hold the top up aswell. My hair would never fit in a clip any other way

CMOTDibbler · 08/09/2013 21:21

I twist mine up into something like a french pleat and secure with an ibis clip

WandaDoff · 08/09/2013 21:23

Claire's do bigger clips for thick hair, only thing I've found that will hold mine.

Either that or a french plait keeps it under control.

I used to use one of these to take hair back from my face.

The big one.

Thanks! I really appreciate all the great ideas. I've been okay over the summer but the changing seasons are sure to mean a lot of crazy frizzy days unless I can tame the beast.

A low ponytail to one side at the nape (I.e., below my ear), so that my hair comes over one shoulder. Sometimes I do it in a plait to one side also.

TallulahBetty · 08/09/2013 22:31

Another vote for the sock bun - ridiculously easy to do. YouTube it Smile

I used to wear mine back with an oval leather thing that had a pointed stick thing that poked through the leather oval either side, after I had twisted my hair up at the back. No idea what it was called but it kept my hair in place!

That was about 50 years ago though. :(

This type of thing

I loved them. Had a brown one, a black one and a rosewood coloured one. No idea what happened to them over the years!

laeiou · 09/09/2013 21:55

Thanks again for all the ideas.

Late to this, but I used one of these african butterfly to hold my hair up in a twist.
