Help me get that relaxed outdoorsy style!

I moved to a rural area a couple of years ago and I'm increasingly feeling like i stand out like a sore thumb. My usual style is skinny jeans, with a top and cardi with either brogues or knee high boots. I always feel like I'm too dressy. I'm a SAHM so don't need to be dressy, but really struggle with feeling scruffy if I don't make an effort.

Help me look relaxed and outdoorsy!

Lots of nice country type things on fat face.

Aelfwyn · 08/09/2013 15:41

I think your style sounds lovely. Brogues on women are good. Embrace your inner tweediness, don't dress down to be something you're not. Joules has lots of country inspiration this season. :)

Thanks everyone for your replies. Those boots are a bit out of my price range Foxy, I also don't want to dress as something I'm not iyswim. I'm not into horses and that type of country pursuits. I like camping, taking the kids on bike rides, going for walks etc.

I guess I just need to buy a few items that are good for the above activities and that I can throw on for the school run. aelfwyn I love my skinnies and brogues, I'm not going to stop wearing them Grin

I like that look - I think it largely comes down to the colour palette - think of browns, olives, neutrals - Kate Middleton has that look down to a tee.

daimbardiva · 11/09/2013 12:27

I don't think you need to change - it makes me sad to think of you dressing down to fit in. FWIW I live in the countryside too, and dress similarly to you - having a good pair of boots helps; I've got a trusty pair of red Hunter wellies, and a few flat pairs from Clarks. Also, important to have practical outerwear that you actually like - I have a much used and admired Boden mac from years ago, and aslo a Fat Face gilet (something which a few years ago, I'd have scoffed at. I ummed and ahhed about buying it earlier this year, but now wonder how I lived without it).

Other than that I just wear things I like - mostly skinny jeans, sometimes dresses etc., but I don't see my style as being much different from my "townie" friends.

Get a gilet! My style's more like yours but I had to buy a gilet for a freezing holiday I was going on last year, and I love it, so useful for throwing on over stuff for outdoorsy activities. I have this Rab one in navy. You can't tell in the picture but it has a hot pink lining that makes me love it even more, and it's so soft and cosy that I feel like I'm wrapped in a duvet whenever I wear it. It makes me look like a sloane ranger but nevermind.

I've had mine for 8 years and still love it. Best buy ever.

This is my look. In the winter / wet I tend to wear skinny jeans with country boots (currently brown Ariat Windermere boots), ski socks, a gilet, waterproof coat. I have several knitted jumpers from Celtic Sheepskin. This is basically my uniform for country walks, dog walking etc.
I do ride so do spend a lot of time in jodhpurs too.

When I'm going somewhere smarter or into London I do wear smarter shoes (I have some lovely loafer type shoes) and put on a smarter coat. Smelling of horse tends to be less acceptable!

Eggwhisk · 12/09/2013 20:00

I have a Fat Face gillet that i got about 2 years ago and I only tend to wear it to clean the chickens out. It makes me feel enormous as it's quite puffy. Also I struggle with things to wear underneath it. I need to get myself to the city and go shopping I think!

kezztrel I like your gillet, it looks quite slimline. I always feel like the Michelin man in my Fat Face one.

I hope its nice eggwhisk.. I liked the green also , but sadly they didn't have it in size 10 so went for the loganberry Natalie one. Like the colour and it looks quite slimline so hoping it is nice ..

Kezztrel · 12/09/2013 21:27

Yes eggwhisk it's more slimline than most but still v warm. Not as shiny as it looks in the pics!

practicality · 12/09/2013 22:11

How about an arran or fair isle jumper over skinny jeans tucked into riding style boots?

practicality · 12/09/2013 22:12
