If you're in your late 40's or early 50's what skincare, makeup or in fact any products do you recommend? Basically, I'm 49 now and feel that I have really aged a lot in the past couple of years and basically the products that I could use then are really just not "cutting the mustard" now, so, dear fellow MN's what products do you recommend as being worth the money?
I've been looking around town today and there are so many different types of moisturiser, eyecreams, makeup etc I just don't know where to start and all the different beauty counters recommend their products - my (menopausal) head is spinning with it all Smile '
So if you're my age(ish) and know of anything really good that I should be using, please let me know Thanks.
I anyone knows of a good moisturiser that is anti-ageing and good for skin that is uneven with small broken capillaries on the cheeks and chin - I will LOVE you forever and ever Smile

I use the Boots No7 range, currently Restore & Renew though they have others. Been very happy with it, does make a difference & my skin can be sensitive at times but had no problems with any of their things. On offer at the moment, 3for2, which helps. There always seems to be some offer running so rarely have to pay full price, plus you get points of course.

Elemis pro collagen Marine cream. Expensive but wonderful. I use various elemis cleansers face washes and toners too.

I'm 48 and my skin is v sensitive.

In my mid 50s and without my glasses on, my skin looks great - not so good with but still ok! Every day at least two glasses of water when I wake up, without fail, and rosehip or peppermint tea every day plus Olay 3 point treatment cream. The water and the tea are the essential ones.

WildThongsHeartString · 08/09/2013 00:06

Same!
I recently re-thought every product, some of them I had been using for many years but they just were not giving me what I need now. The main daily changes are Kiels facial moisturiser, Naked Renew Shampoo & Conditioner and daily iron supplements and I feel more like my 30 old self.

WildThongsHeartString · 08/09/2013 00:08

Oh and just about tripled my water intake as well. That has really helped my skin.

BobbyGentry · 08/09/2013 00:17

I kid you not but Aldi's Lacura range work for non-sensitive folk
www.aldi.co.uk/en/product-range/health-beauty/lacura-skincare/
Also, it doesn't break the piggy-bank to try!

I'm 47, rather skeptical about any kinds of miracle creams, I'm pretty happy with how my skin looks for my age
I use factor 50 whenever I go outside
Olive oil
coconut oil
Lush 'skin drink' which is heavy on the sesame oil
My skin is on the dry side so I slather my face with grease several times a day.
Never use any detergents on my face, tend not to bother taking make up off, it just sort of wears off and I replace it with moisturiser

Yes I know that all sounds appalling but it works for me:o

Wuldric · 08/09/2013 01:14

I like the Boots range mentioned previously.

I also use Botox - which is quite magical actually - but obviously not to everyone's taste .... My dentist does it when I go for a checkup.

VestaCurry · 08/09/2013 01:43

Using a muslin cloth to massage off moisturiser every day makes a difference to my 'very late 40's' skin. I use a Shea butter based cleanser from Boots (can't remember it's name, but think it's in either one of their organic or natural skin collections). I did use Liz Earle but my skin became sensitive to it. Essentially it's the exfoliating with the muslin cloth that makes the difference (removing dead skin cells each time).
I tend to experiment with moisturisers but love Elemis, Decleor, and most organic ranges.
I use sun protection but am philosophical about it because we need vitamin D3 which is most efficiently provided by the sun.

Lazysuzanne · 08/09/2013 01:53

I sometimes use an oil and salt paste to exfoliate..agree on the vitamin d dilemma, this summer I've been keeping everything protected except my feet, been wearing sandals and my feet are a bit tanned.
Surely that'll help with the vitamin D :o

I have always worn very matt foundation...but when I recently put on my glasses it looked all caked, chalky and emphasised the one wrinkle and open pores.

I now use ;

No7 pore refining serum
Then Nivea Q10 anti wrinkle day cream with SPF 15
Then No7 lift and laminate foundation (great stuff, not caked or chalky)

At night I use Nivea Q10 ant wrinkle night cream

I look 20 Grin

ggirl · 08/09/2013 19:53

I would say the important things are
exfoliation - can be done with a dermaflannel from bravura as well as glycolic serum to renew the top layer

sunscreen -whatever suits you and sunglasses

moisturise-hyaluronic acid really helps used under normal moisturiser . You can buy straight hyaluronic acid serum from bravura or boots sell this which is good

and finally a retin a cream used regularly helps with wrinkles. I got mine form Dubai over the counter .

Drywhiteplease · 08/09/2013 19:55

Oh and I cleanse and tone every night.
Currently using Lancôme but I have been very happy with Baby lotion and a cheap L'Oreal toner....I like to spend my money on clothes!

ggirl · 08/09/2013 19:58

Makeup - I would recommend YSL touch eclat foundation , doesn't show pores up and last all day . The cheaper alternative is l'oreal true match.

Ime less is more flattering when skin starts to age

AnnetteCurtin · 08/09/2013 20:01

I also use the Aldi Lacura skin care sometimes and it's actually not too bad. Another one I use is La Roche Posay anti redness moisturiser. Not that my face is particularly red, or that I have roseacia but, like you OP, I have redness around my nose and some on my cheeks. I have a bottle of original Olay on hand too.

For foundation I use Dermablend in nude. It's lovely and dewy and glowy rather than cakey. Other make up is just what takes my fancy when browsing or recommended on here.

Also agree with water, water, water, and make up remover with muslin or microfibre cloth.

Nearly 50 here too.Smile

prettybird · 08/09/2013 20:04

Berryblast - if you are also not too short-sighted and wear contact lenses, you can try wearing just one contact lens (best in the dominant eye) for seeing distances and not wearing a lens in the other eye (if it is not worse than -3.0) which will then take over for reading.

It takes a few days to get used to (and at night or driving any distance, you might want both lenses) but it certainly beats having to look for reading glasses all the time! Grin

NigellasGuest · 08/09/2013 20:13

Ok so I'm 49 and next week I'm having some filler.

Other than that, I recommend Liquid Gold by Alpha H, P50 by biologique recherche, Retin A, and a vitamin C serum. (NOT all at once or even on the same day necessarily)!!

I don't think you will get all the anti-ageing you need just from a moisturiser. For me, moisturiser simply seals in all the other stuff I've put onto my skin (see above). I tend to finish with a cheapish moisturiser.

disclaimer: The products I've mentioned above work for me because i have tough skin and might not work for other people.

Plus lots and lots of water and fish oil tablets.

Lazysuzanne · 08/09/2013 20:31

Berry, yes it is crap but it comes to us all.
Really there's only so much improvement to be made with skincare, holding back ageing to any significant degree is going to take 'work' (ie surgery) I'm not sure if thats a step I'll be taking but I'll certainly be weighing it up over the next 5 years or so!

slug · 08/09/2013 20:39

48 next month. I don't spend much on skincare with the exception of Dr Haushka Rose Day Cream.
