Tipping Hairdresser? Necessry when price is £100 minimum?

LeiceserLady · 05/09/2013 17:12

Hi all,
I pay £100 for a cut and colour with my hairdresser. I almost always have the in-house conditioner (an extra £15), and I also buy my shampoo and conditioner in the salon (an extra £20).

So my question is, should I also give her a tip on top of all that? Today for example I paid the full £135.

She's quite smartly dressed and always talking about her foreign holidays and new car etc.

On the one hand I feel I 'ought' to give her something (the way I was brought up). But on the other hand, I dont think she's particularly hard-up (she's not on the minimum wage like a waitress), and I also think £130 quid is a fair price for what I get from her.

Don't they get extra for selling the in-house products to you anyway?

My rational side says I shouldn't tip on top of all I've paid out (an extra £13 if you work on the 10% idea).

But I feel kind of mean for not giving her anything 'extra'.

Help! Am I stuck in a tipping time warp?!

If she's really good and you rely on her I'd definitely tip her - good hairdressers are so hard to find.

Only exception would be if she owns the business.

I tip the junior who washes my hair, she always gives me a lovely head massage.

I was a junior in a salon on weekends,a couple of quid use to make my day as I only got a tenner showing my age

Screwfox · 05/09/2013 17:32

There are gazillions of threads on this. Piles

My hairdressing bills are always £130+ but because she does a fab job i tip her £5.00.

She charges £60 per hour for a perm or colour.

Thanks all ...

I do think it's tough becuase she probably earns more than me anyway and sometimes I feel patronising and/or like an old granny giving her £5 now and again "to get herself something nice".

Does anyone know if they get commission from the salon for selling the extra treatments and products?

Yes there's a massive mark up on the products they sell.

What is in house conditioner you pay an extra 15 quid a time for conditioner?Confused

LeiceserLady · 05/09/2013 18:05

@valiumredhead

Yes, I get a 'special' treatment/conditioner after I've had a colour done. Not sure it makes that much difference but the hairdresser reckons it helps 'seal in' the colour. I have shades of red and they do fade quickly

See, this is why I think I'm already paying enough - she gets extra commission for all the products I buy off her, so why should I tip on top of that as well. But then I feel bad when I don't give her anything!

Wish someone who works in a hairdresser could tell us what the norm is!

Thanks again everyone

I'm stunned you have to pay extra,I have that also but it's included in the price. Really, no need to tip unless it's the shampoo person.

PrimalLass · 05/09/2013 20:19

No, I don't tip my hairdresser as I pay her £60/hour. Three times what I earn.

littlepeas · 05/09/2013 20:44

I think it depends on the culture in the salon. Everyone tips in the salon I go to, so I tip.

CurlyhairedAssassin · 05/09/2013 21:34

I would maybe bung her a fiver and if someone else washed your hair, give them 2 quid. I certainly wouldn't be giving 10% of the total if the total includes products.

CurlyhairedAssassin · 05/09/2013 21:35

Disclaimer: I go to a little old ladies salon by mine cos I refuse to pay silly Toni and guy type prices anymore for something I have to get done every 6 weeks z

scarlet76 · 05/09/2013 23:19

I don't tip. Pay £80 for a cut and colour. If I tipped I may have to go to a cheaper salon and then they would lose my custom.

plannedshock · 06/09/2013 01:09

Is she self employed? If not shes not getting any of what you pay, most hairdressers have to make an amount (twice their wage) then they earn a commission on top, she may or may not earn commission on sales-don't in my salon. She might have nice things due to lesser outgoings?
you could just ask them to do a head massage with the regular conditioner on towel dried hair to save the £15.
It is nice to receive tips but I don't mind if I'm not tipped its not a given just a bonus.

LeoandBoosmum · 06/09/2013 01:33

I think if she's your regular hairdresser and you like her work you should buy her a nice Christmas present such as a a candle from The White Company (with a discount code, of course) Smile

mewkins · 06/09/2013 08:21

No I wouldn't tip. That is a lot of money to pay I woukd assume she gets paid well. I don't get the tipping hairdresser thing at all.

BreasticlesNTesticles · 06/09/2013 08:28

Planned beat me to it. Hairdressers, unless they rent a chair, get pad an hourly rate and any additional depends on how much they bring in for a day/week of which they get a percentage.

LeiceserLady · 06/09/2013 11:24

Thanks for all the comments everyone.

Not sure if she's self-employed - will have to try and find out!

Argh - I wish there was just a socially accepted 'fixed price' for these kinds of things!

I imagine your hairdresser is delighted to see you, tip or not!! I've no doubt she makes quite a commision on your extra conditioner and products.

Red dye fades no matter what. I wonder if you need the extra £15 conditioner??? More expensive than gold, weight for weight, I suspect. Save on that and give a tip?
