Having my colours done on Saturday!!

So I decided I would restrain myself and not buy any winter clothes until I've had my colours done. I am 2 stone lighter than last winter and have a lot of clothes but quite a lot of it is too big and quite a lot of it I've hung onto for too many years. Wardrobes are heaving so I'm hoping I'll get some guidance on how to pair down and look good in the right colours for me Smile
Is there anything in particular I should ask? Anything you wish you'd asked at the time? What should I expect? I've been asked to arrive for 9am and be available until 4pm Shock I think there are three other people booked on.

So can I be cured of my impulsive shopping habits?

Exciting! Good luck! I didn't feel like I wanted to ask anything more as the woman who did mine was very clear and thorough, but just make sure you can see what she's seeing re. which colours look best and that you're fully convinced by your 'diagnosis' :) Any idea what you'll be?

Hopasholic · 04/09/2013 18:49

If I had to guess I'd say Winter I think. I have brown eyes and very dark reddy/brown (dyed) hair. It's hard to tell what my natural colour is now but it's a good few shades lighter than it is at the moment with a lot of grey. The roots are a big problem with me being so dark so once I've had my colours done I might start the process of going lighter, but feel a bit Hmm about it.

Just a quick bump to ask what their make-up is like? Is it worth investing in?

Had mine done years ago! (about 20 years ago when I was 18!)

I was an autumn flowing into spring. It's quite hard to find the colours in the shops which can be quite frustrating. I know what looks good, but finding it is another matter - just the right kind of teal blue etc

Kezztrel · 06/09/2013 16:55

Just realised you didn't say who is doing your colours - is it House of Colour? If so no, I wouldn't buy their makeup, it's expensive for the quality. The lipsticks all turned fuchsia on me after a few minutes and the blusher isn't the best texture or packaging (good colour though!)

Hopasholic · 06/09/2013 17:05

It is HoC yes, Got a feeling from the phone call that she's going to heavily push the style day, but I don't think I'll book on that. She is owing to do my make-up though so it'll be interesting to see what it looks like!

OP posts:
Aquelven · 06/09/2013 17:07

If it's HoC I would get the lipsticks but not any of the other makeup items. It's easy to find matches for the blushers & for foundation you can ask at cosmetic counters & get samples.
The lipsticks will give you a good idea of what to match up to in shops though & I found them ok for quality & very flattering. The only time I've ever been happy with a red one.

Make sure you watch carefully the others bring swatched, it really helps you to understand the difference it makes. I'd try not to go first, so you can watch at least one of the others first. It's such a long day because four of you are being done, mine was a bit shorter as there were three of us.
I'm sure you'll really enjoy it & come away fired up with enthusiasm.

Hopasholic · 06/09/2013 19:13

Thanks Aquelven. I'll certainly bear that in mind. Looking forward to it!

Grin travel glad you popped up!

She talks...... A lot, if the phone call was anything to go by so I'll ask plenty of questions if I get a word in

RockMummy · 08/09/2013 11:35

Well Hopasholic. How did it go? Please do let us know.

Hopasholic · 08/09/2013 15:50

It was really good. I was there or 6 & a half hours though and I was knackered by the end of it. The consultant was very experienced, been doing it for 18 years. I would say there is no way you can self diagnose, it has very little to do with your hair & eye colour.

She was very thorough, there were 3 of us having it done and to be honest, I'm surprised the consultant didn't tell one of the women to do one! She was sooooooo negative and wouldn't take anything on board, first question was 'how long do I have to be here?' Confused she kept rolling her eyes and was very rude!

I am a soft autumn leaf, which involves many colours I don't like unfortunately, but I'm willing to start trying them on. I wanted to be a winter, and thought I would be but it was very clear to see that those colours don't work.

Definitely worth it. I had a lovely day Smile

(I bought a lipstick and the foundation because the match was perfect)

Kezztrel · 08/09/2013 16:51

Ooh glad you enjoyed it! That other woman sounds annoying, presumably she'd paid to be there?! I don't know what soft autumn leaf colours are like but I'm sure you'll grow to love them once you see how good they make you look. I found many winter colours a bit obnoxious at first but love them now!

Hopasholic · 08/09/2013 17:02

Somebody had bought it her as a gift and she clearly didn't want to be there. Just kept saying 'no way I'm never Wearing that colour ...... No, I'm not changing the lipstick I wear'...... It was infuriating!

Although I'm not awestruck with my colours, I am looking forward to at least giving them a go! They're rusts/greens/browns/mustard but there are also some nice blues/turquoise/purple so I'm happier with those.

Can you tell us how to use the wallet properly Travel?......

RockMummy · 08/09/2013 17:40

Welcome to the world of autumns. I'm a bright leaf autumn so quite similar to you I imagine. It's not such a bad place to be. Glad you had a good time having the actual experience. Sorry someone let the side down! Are you going to have the style day? I haven't as yet but may do in the future. P.S. there is a beautiful turquoise party dress in Oasis!

Hopasholic · 08/09/2013 18:31

I might do the style day, the consultant is also hosting a Boden event in November which I might go along to as there are a few dresses I like and she'll help me pick the right colours.

Thanks for the oasis tip! I'll have a look, I noticed a nice bird print top in autumn colours while I was looking at some pinterset boards from the Hoc autumn thread.

I suppose your must get them too travel in the end she just said to her 'Well I'm here to advise you, if you choose not take take it, it really doesn't matter to me whatsoever!' that was by 4pm though and she'd done really well to bite her tongue all day! Wouldn't mind but she'd offered to go to her new house to give her some help with paint colours..... No charge, just because she enjoys it. No bloody pleasing some folk!

She even criticised what the consultant was wearing Blush because it was 'too dressy for a Saturday'

OP posts:
KosherBacon · 08/09/2013 18:36

Sounds like that woman needed a bitch slap and kicking out! How infuriating.

Aquelven · 08/09/2013 18:48

What a rude woman. Makes you wonder why she bothered to go, even if it was a present, if she thought it such a waste of her time. Your consultant must have the patience of a saint.

Glad you enjoyed it. It's a real boost, I thought anyway. I wasn't ehat I expected either so was a bit non plussed at the colours on the day but I'm loving them more & more. And funnily enough, when I rummage through my wardrobe, it's amazing to find how much I'd actually bought in the past that fits my swatches. Except for all the black Hmm

cardoon · 08/09/2013 20:42

Yes it does - I'm just not that confident i know what tones.......Confused

Hopefully · 08/09/2013 21:37

cardoon I really struggled to know what 'toned' at first, but found the descriptions in the little workbook you get alongside the wallet really helped me until I got to grips with it all. I found once I'd sorted my wardrobe out and tried out my wallet in a couple of shops I was far more comfortable using it that I expected though.
