Runners - how do you manage to look stylish?

I have just started couch25k and I am keen to make sure that as autumn and winter draw in I don't let poor weather and lack of suitable clothing stop me from getting out.

What do you all wear to keep cool but warm to start with, dry if it's wet and also look reasonably stylish?

I don't have megabucks to spend, but could do with at least 2 sets of everything.

Sweaty Betty stuff is lovely but £££££

I've accumulated stuff from all over the place over the years, mostly online: Start Fitness, Sweatshop, wiggle. I used to only buy black or white so whatever I dug out always coordinated, it's not very useful when you're running at night though.

My most stylish item of running wear is a red running skirt, but it's for summer wear only, except when it's really hot because my thighs chafe really painfully.

My hands get too hot in gloves. When it's really cold I wear a longsleeve top with thumbholes like this but in, er, pink. In my defence it's the only pink item of clothing in my entire wardrobe.

DH has some dayglo yellow running gloves. With his bright yellow hands, black longsleeve running shirt and leggings he looks like a mime Grin

I really like the Nike dri-fit capris. Often on sale in Sports Direct. Also from there I have a fluoro pink Karrimor windproof gilet. Though as Snowlie said, I don't like the Karrimor tights. I also second the Ron Hill recommendation. I love Icebreaker and Helly Hansen tops for winter; they are expensive, but I think I'm winning in cost per wear terms.

I would spend your money on shoes and bra and get properly fitted for them. Do try on socks as different brands are different shapes.

You'll get to know what features are comfy for you or not e.g. where the zips are on legging bottoms, thumb loops, zip necks. Start with sale bargains then you can upgrade kit when you're more sure of what you'll use.

Get a Buff.

I buy most stuff from sports direct.i did treat myself to some sweaty Betty running tights but prefer my Nike or karrimor ones.

My trainers are asics gel sole ones very light and comfortable.

I don't worry about looking stylish as usually a sweaty mess within 10 minutes and always shower as soon as I get home.

I invested in a good arm band to hold my iphone for music and hair up in a ponytail then looped through but not pulled all the way through so that its not swishing from side to side and getting on my nerves.

I didn't like the Sweaty Betty running tights either. They made my legs look like sausages and the pocket was tiny. Sad

TK Maxx is brilliant not only for trainers but also exercise stuff. I've ran in nice Nike running tops, light jackets, shorts etc and they're a fraction of the price you pay full price.

they also do Elle range - I got one great t-shirt which had a zipped small pocket in the side - good for I suppose keys??

I've got a North Face flight series jacket which is great. Seems to be replaced now with coral

CaptainWentworth and alwaysrunninginheels - do we need a GNR thread?
It's my second half-marathon but I'm going to be a long way from home and could do with some hand-holding :)

Belindaearl2 · 03/09/2013 22:20

Sorry should have said mine is black similar

feetheart · 03/09/2013 22:37
