Where can I find long (at least knee length) tunics to wear with leggings?

I've been searching for ages and can't seem to find the right kind. I want to be able to wear them with leggings and boots but I really hate my legs so the least leg showing the better!

I've tried loads on but they all seem to end mid-thigh or just above and I just don't want that much leg showing, even with leggings on :(

I found a fab one last week in Sainsburys, fine knit and came down to just above my knee, but it made my bum look like a sack of puppies so I had to take it back...

Something like the kind in Joe Browns is what I'm after. Does anyone know what their sizing is like?

I'm 5'5 if that makes a difference. I'd appreciate any help!

Oh, and BTW, are better than tights because you can have bare feet and thus a semblance of summer footwear.

Alwayscheerful · 01/09/2013 19:34

I think tunics tend to be mid thigh length and look good with leggings any longer and they become a dress and they usually look better with tights.

I am tall so I look for longer length tunics, Fat face, Sea salt and white stuff tend to come up slightly longer than most ie mid to lower thigh.

marks & spencer website lists a cashmere tunic type jumper with lots of reviews complaining about the length, its great with leggings or tights.
Woolover have several tunics and knitted dresses in longer lengths.

IsabelleRinging and Primallass - it's not that I only want to wear tunics and not dresses, it's the fact that I can't find knee length tunics so may need to try dresses instead. I must admit I don't do dresses so haven't really shopped around for them but I'd assumed that what was obviously a dress rather than a tunic just wouldn't look 'right' with leggings, but better with tights. For some reason, leggings seem safer (ie: I can hide behind them!) to me than tights.

Thanks very much everyone for the suggestions. I'll have a good google in a minute.

Remus, thanks for the link to the Pinterest board. Some fab ideas of things to wear with maxis there! I think I'll try mine with layers on the top half and tights & boots underneath for winter.

I LOVE the Great Plains tunic, can't scroll back to see who linked it but it looks lovely. Is it you wearing it? I really like the look of it with the belt. It's a bit short for what I'm after but the look I want so I think I'll have to try and ignore my footballers legs and brave it!

It is hard to get your head round, but leggings really don't give you much more coverage than thick tights, plus if you wear knee high boots then there's only a bit of leg on show anyway! Definitely look at dresses, and remember dress for the figure you have now, too many woman who've lost weight struggle to lose the mentality that there's certain styles they can't wear. (mind you, there's also a large number who used to be thin and just size up the same styles that suited them previously without thinking that might not be the best look anymore)

LadyMilfordHaven · 02/09/2013 06:57

Lol at frogmen. That's stuck in my head now

LadyMilfordHaven · 02/09/2013 06:59

If cellulite was stopping me baring my legs I would rankle that. That would be the ultimate motivator

MrsCampbellBlack · 02/09/2013 07:12

Toast has loads of dresses/tunics that work over leggings.

herbaceous · 02/09/2013 07:48

Lady MH - I've had cellulite from the knees up since I was 16. I'm now 47. Don't think I haven't tried to shift it! Leggings are a godsend.

tethersend · 02/09/2013 09:38

I have TERRIBLE legs, always have, even at my thinnest.

I hate leggings.

Opaques, any kind of tights in fact, maxi skirts and dresses,, everything looks better than leggings IMO. A well-cut knee length skirt with tights is far more flattering than leggings with anything.

herbaceous · 02/09/2013 10:11

But what do you wear on your feet in summer with tights? Sweat city.

I too wear a lot of knee-length dresses and skirts, but sometimes for practicality/modesty leggings are required. So much more comfy than trousers, which fall down the whole time when sitting down and standing up.

MissDD1971 · 02/09/2013 10:39

Can I say?! sorry - H&M had some fab footless tights (like cropped leggings) but they were sort of black opaque and not thick at all. I've worn them a few times in summer when I didn't feel brave enough to just wear dress/tunic without bare legs.

tethersend · 02/09/2013 10:42

I don't do trousers, they don't suit me.

In summer I wear sandals with maxi dresses and skirts or go bare-legged with a knee length dress if it's really hot.

I don't get the MN obsession with White Stuff at all, very very mumsy and frumpy. (and my local factory shop is full of their stuff and I always think "ooooh WS, MN raves about this....and rush over and it's horrid!)

Bizarrely, having said all that, Wink Phase Eight and M and S Indigo have some lovely mid-thigh tunic tops at the mo'.

I think the tunic secret is that it has to be fine wool or jersey. Because if it's cotton or linen, you might as well put a sheet over your head and cut some holes out.

MrsCampbellBlack · 02/09/2013 12:49

I thought the general consensus on S&B was that white stuff was frumpy and in the same league as white linen trousers Wink

Imwoodword · 02/09/2013 13:51

What's wrong with white linen trousers? Confused

goodasitgets · 02/09/2013 15:17

Yes it's me in the Great Plains one Smile I am 5'11 so things do come up shorter! I wear the Boden Emma with the same belt

MrsMeow · 02/09/2013 15:51

Thanks everyone :)

Goodasitgets, it really looks good on you. I think I'm a similar size to you now although I am only 5'5 so I'm wondering if it will look longer on me? I have 32" inside leg though

goodasitgets · 02/09/2013 15:53

I'm size 16, 34 inside leg. Have a v long body though so I imagine it would be longer

I like leggings and tunics, saw some nice tunics in debenhams, the range I can't remember! Sorry not much help

LadyMilfordHaven · 02/09/2013 18:21

No one likes white stuff. It's a BORING SHOP

LadyMilfordHaven · 02/09/2013 18:22

Don't wrinkle your skin then !

Capitola · 02/09/2013 20:40

I don't think anyone on MN raves about White Stuff.

Quite the opposite - it's normally rather sneered at for being frumpy.
