Has anyone ever boil washed jeans to shrink them?

I've lost just over 1.5 stone since about spring this year and have been pretty much living in summer clothes whilst I've been losing. Just tried on a load of skinny jeans to find something to wear when I go out tonight and they look awful on me, all saggy on the bum and back of legs :(

I know I should be grateful, and I am, truly! But I don't really want to go out and buy a smaller size because I'm not at goal yet and I'd like to lose at least another stone if I can. So I was thinking of sticking them on a hot wash to see if they'd shrink!

Has anyone else tried it? I'm not fussed if they lose length in the leg as I usually wear them tucked into boots anyway. Worth a try?

You'd probably be better taking them in a bit if you can sew, or know someone who can.

Put the jeans on inside out, then pin along the side seam, from the waist down the legs.
You can then sew a straight-ish seam, and trim the excess off.

They won't be perfect, but should be ok for a while.

Well done with the weight loss.

I bought some boyfriend jeans this year that stretched horribly within the first hour I wore them (will avoid Warehouse jeans in future). I washed them on a long 60 wash and then tumbled them on a hot setting.Much better fit and they hold their shape for about a day at a time now if I do that each wash.

Give it a go - you've nothing to lose if they don't fit you anyway.

They will probably tighten up slightly, but if you have lost 1.5 stone they won't shrink that much (well done by the way!)

Hi well done on the weight loss.

I lost similar last year and it's a bit much to shrink clothing to. I do tumble dry my skinnies now to make them tight but not tried boil washing. let me know how you get on.

If they have stretch in them I would think boil washing them will destroy the lycra and make them even more saggy. Shrink to fit usually only really works with raw denim as far as I know.

It didn't work when I tried it.

My jeans lost a lot of colour in patches, but still sagged badly after 20 minutes wear.
Congratulations on your weight loss.

Thanks very much for the congrats, I'd love to say it was down to hard work & exercise but I can only thank Slimming World haha!

I think I might try it on one pair and see, then maybe stick the rest on eBay if it doesn't work. They're pretty decent brands which is why I don't want to just chuck/donate them if I can get a few months more wear out of them. I think they all do have a bit of stretch in though so not sure how well they'll turn out...

Annianni, I read about taking them in when I googled about shrinking them yesterday. Unfortunately it seems a bit out of my area of expertise (ie: none!) fab idea though, the ones I saw looked great!

You can probably have them taken in quite cheaply at a dry cleaners if they are brands worth paying an extra tenner or so to keep.

Don't know if they still do them but £7 primark skinnies are ace. I think it would be worth it to get a pair for the interim because you deserve to feel good about yourself while you're losing weight and I think better fitting jeans, even if they're cheap, will make you feel like you look better.

I'm currently losing baby weight and was trying to make do with bad trousers but have just decided to bite the bullet and buy some clothes for the meantime as I just feel crappy in badly fitting clothes. Looking forward to them getting too big though! I've decided to get gap legging jeans as I figure they might not look too bad big over thermals to keep me toasty in winter.

Thanks both :) I'm about to have a huge clear out so will sort out which ones are worth trying to keep hold of.

GnuYork, I nipped into Primark yesterday and picked up a pair of dark blue skinnies for £10, thinking that they'd do for the interim. But when I tried them on they actually looked really nice! Definitely going back for another look :) I agree with the good fitting jeans thing. I remember buying a really cheap DP pair after having DS and it made a world of difference to my confidence. Well done on the weight loss!
