I fancy a bit of librarian chic this Autumn - am I mad?

I've got an idea in my head of slightly quirky print dresses or blouses with a tweed or cord skirt, coloured tights and brogues or Mary Janes. No big glasses though, I spent enough years in those as a kid!

Is this a look that could work or am I going to look like someone's gran? If we think it's a goer, where would be good to shop?

I think its a look that would work if you make sure you fox it up a bit, so don't get swamped in it, make sure you can see your shape in there, too.

Do it. Tweed is very "in" this AW, featuring leather cut-out and panels to bring it slightly more up to date. Definitely wouldn't look granny-esque in that!

Many high street stores would be stocking all your above I should imagine.

Yes, agree if you fox it up a bit.

I wore this a couple of times last winter - I'm fat so I was careful not to look granny fat and wore it with coloured fishnets/Brora patterned tights, plummy but bright lipstick and my hair up but very loose (so sexy up-do).

That way I could wear a stretchy pencil tweedy coloured skirt and a silk blouse with a hint of cleavage (my cleavage is massive so it's always going to be present) Grin

Librarian chic is brilliant but personally I need heels to make it work for me - so tweedy pencil skirt, silk blouse, nude fishnets or polka dot tights or somesuch, heels.

My favourite skirt is a tweedy one with slits cut into the hem to give it some movement.

MarshaBrady · 28/08/2013 11:18

The outnet has some good tweedy stuff today.

Agree on brogues over Mary Janes.

Plush librarian sounds good, ie rich colours etc

Yes you are mad! Librarian chic always looks like a good idea at the end of August/September as it acts as a subtle counterpoint to the golden afterglow of the summer holidays. Fast forward a month when you have to wear tights, it is too chilly for see through blouses and your sun tan has faded and there is no chic left at all - just librarian.

Have a look at Marni for inspiration.

BTW when / if you become a grandmother will you expect to look "like someone's gran" or just like yourself?

CharlotteBr0nteSaurus · 28/08/2013 11:33

sadly i think age and size is a factor for this one.
i could do librarian chic really well when 27 and a size 10-12

although i still love the look, nowadays at 35 and a size 14 I just look like a librarian, without the chic.

buttercrumble · 28/08/2013 11:53

Oooh love that look, my dd wears this style a lot and looks great Smile

jimjamspam · 28/08/2013 13:59

I have some red or dead glasses my DH calls my "sexy librarian glasses" - works for me Grin

I'm going to be rockin' this look again for Autumn / Winter I'm 31 (though look young) and a size 10 - 12 (want to lose half a stone to be honest - hoping weight will 'drop off' when I go back to work next wee). I like a mix of Hobbs NW3, Monsoon, Warehouse, Joules (lovely tweed jacket in new season) and M&S do very good value cashmere cardigans. I wear a lot of jewel colours too

I think that luxurious fabrics stop it being frumpy so cashmere and silk mixes. I do still wear jeans at the weekend though ...

Another one who says brogues over Mary Jane's (which are a bit 90s)

MyGoldenNotebook · 28/08/2013 15:02
  • week, obviously
CambridgeBlue · 28/08/2013 16:35

Despite being neither young (I'm 40) or particularly thin (size 12ish with big boobs) I think I am going to give it a go. I like the idea of jewel colours, lovely fabrics and a slightly foxy edge.

I agree that I'm probably attracted to this look at the moment as a contrast to the summery stuff I've been wearing for the past few months but I do fancy a change from my usual winter wardrobe and I've been promising myself I will wear more dresses.

Thanks all :)
