Is it important to put some kind of cream on face before make up?

up till now I've just slapped on a bit of baby oil before applying make up, but now I can see the dreaded wrinkles becoming more visible and so I'm thinking do I need to invest in some good quality moisturiser? if so which would you recommend? I have normal skin. Thanks Smile

I'm no expert but use Clinique Dramatically Different moisturiser, then Elemis flash balm (which I love) then make up on top. I'm early 40s and the lines are starting to appear too.

urmydarlings · 26/08/2013 23:26

thanks suze, but one more question is it really expensive ?

The Clinique is around £28 (large size) and I've used just under half a bottle since Feb so I think good value for money (Debenhams often have 10% off promotions).
The Elemis I got as a mag freebie sample which has lasted ages, much longer than I thought it would. I've found it on a beauty website for £25, RRP is £32.

I've no idea re wrinkles and lines but I doubt it. I've only started using the more expensive skin care stuff again in the last year. I used to use Simple or Avon moisturisers.

urmydarlings · 26/08/2013 23:34

thanks alot just googled them and maybe I'll get one on amazon. x

I can link to the site I found for the Elemis when I'm back on the laptop if you'd like (don't know how to link on my phone!)
A lot of ladies I know think the flash balm is amazing. You might get some more replies recommending other moisturisers tomorrow. Bump the thread if need be.

I second Aldi, excellent moisturiser for £1.99!

ithaka · 27/08/2013 07:25

According to dermatologists, most over the counter creams contain only trace elements of anything that would make much difference to your skin and you are wasting your money.

The only thing that really works is prevention - use a sun block at all times, even in winter.

But no matter what you do, we will all get wrinkles in the end. You can't stop time.

valiumredhead · 27/08/2013 09:07

Better to use something with an spf in and baby oil won't help make your make up last.

MissDD1971 · 27/08/2013 12:14

baby oil?! eeek. there is a new anti-wrinkle cream apparently proven with Resveratrol called Prototype on sale in Boots later this month for £39.99.

Personally I'd work out which SPF you need to use (some prefer 30 some prefer 50) - I like now a moisturiser which is plain (Bobbi brown hydrating etc) and Nuxe SPF30 which is sunscreen you can put on over moisturiser.

How much you wrinkle apparently is down to genes/time in sun without protection. I'd strongly advise protection from now on especially when on holidays.

missmartha · 27/08/2013 12:18

Yes to Aldi, as good if not better than any £££ creams I've used

MissDD1971 · 27/08/2013 12:21

I would point out the Aldi might be great value but it only has SPF6 in it.

You really need at LEAST SPF15 minimum (and I use more than that) for every day.

ta for all your replies ladies Smile gonna go have a good old smooch round a few beauty counters in town next week and check out some of your suggestions. some of you will probably faint from horror but I must afmit to never using sun protection creams etc on my face. But am going to now. Grin
