Cosy alternative to leggings?

I have been pretty much living in comfy leggins combined with tunics or dresses since being pregnant with dc1. I had dc2 a few months ago and still carry excess weight so am not able to fit in jeans without looking like a Heffalump. I went through the summer in washed out leggings and black dresses Blush and I am fed up with looking frumpy!

So I would like to splash out on a couple of nice (breastfeeding facilitating) dresses for example.

Are there any tights out there that are warm, soft, comfy, prefarably natural fibres and look reasonably grooming?

I am probably looking for the impossible and have to succumb to a life lived in baggy leggings.

...or can anyone recommend really good quality (more groomed looking?) leggings that would work with dresses like the one linked to above? I buy mine from h&m and find that after just a few washes they are grey and baggy sound the knees Hmm.

Last year I bought the black fleece tights from M&S, they are very warm and cosy!

feelthis · 24/08/2013 22:09

Primark "Cosy tights" aka fleece lined - about a fiver. Won't be in store yet but sure to be again this winter I reckon. Are great - very toasty in those and a short denim skirt and boots in deepest winter.

Dawndonnaagain · 24/08/2013 22:25

Boden leggings are the best. I rarely get anything else there. Their leggings never go baggy, change shape, lose colour. They also seem to last forever!

cloutiedumpling · 24/08/2013 22:41

Primark have the tights in. I've bought three pairs.

Thick woolly tights, no contest

polyhymnia · 25/08/2013 00:16

I recommend Boden's Ponte Roma trousers - somewhere between thick leggings and skinny trousers. Good with tunics.

Curleyhazel · 25/08/2013 07:08

Grin FF.

I'll check boden and primary out.

if you do need some new leggings i would recommend Asda ones. they have worn so well. much better than some much more expensive ones i had.Smile

LadyMilfordHaven · 25/08/2013 07:45

Don't! Lose the weight instead. Bin the tunic shit

HotCrossBunsForAll · 25/08/2013 07:52

Sainsburys 2 for £10 leggings are brilliant, stay black and hold their shape much better than lots of others I've bought. If you want tights though, M&S always have brilliant ones, I got some beautiful grey from there last year. Also another vote for the Primark tights, I have burgundy and they are the warmest thing ever!

Spookey80 · 25/08/2013 08:14

My dsis sounds like you, wears leggings all the time because she wants to lose weigh and thinks jeans make her look bigger.
I recently persuaded her into a nice pair of slim leg jeans and they look much better than her usual leggings garb, she now has a pair of slim trousers too, so I reccomend binning the leggings and just trying some slim fit trousers or jeans. Also gives you more options for tops.

polyhymnia · 25/08/2013 10:07

Actually must admit I only wear leggings round the house and for short supermarket trips in warm weather. Otherwise, skinny jeans or, in winter, for cassual wear, the Boden Roma trousers I mentioned.

I don't think there's anything wrong with tunics in general - I just think of them as long tops. They don't have to be baggy or frumpy. But, as with everything else, you do need to look around to find stylish ones.

AnythingNotEverything · 25/08/2013 10:30

Everyone can fit in jeans. They're too much of a staple to remove from your wardrobe entirely.

Breastfeeding will be easier in tops and trousers than dresses. You don't say what size you are but gap do jeans for every shape up to about a 16.

Jeggings are also a great alternative - a dark grey, indigo or black are very flattering. Use the length of your top, neckline or a belt to balance out your shape.

And to answer your actual question, I like H&M's woolly tights. Lots if colours and designs and nice quality.

LadyMilfordHaven · 25/08/2013 10:43

I do think stretch waistbands let you out on weight though

noddyholder · 25/08/2013 10:53

Tights with that dress?

polyhymnia · 25/08/2013 10:57

PS - with a dress, rather than a long top, I too would only wear opaque/woolly tights, never leggings or the Boden trousers.

Deathbyladybirds · 25/08/2013 11:14

LadyMilfordHaven the OP only had her second baby a few months ago. Give her a break.

goodasitgets · 25/08/2013 14:51

I wear Falke or Wolford leggings. They're more like footless tights really so only for under dresses but they look smarter than leggings

goodasitgets · 25/08/2013 14:52

Oh I forgot about Maidenform, my friend wears their shaping leggings and swears by them

deborahlogan · 25/08/2013 15:08

For winter coming up I would recommend cotton tights. BHS do some great ones for £6.50 a pair which I have bought the last 3 years in different colours like black, burgundy, navy, grey.

AuntySib · 26/08/2013 23:38

Just mentioned on another thread, Falke soft touch cotton tights. They are opaque, really comfy, don't bag and last for ages. Expensive ( £20 or so) but worth it.
