Curly girl method for wavy hair

PurpleBucket · 23/08/2013 09:34

Hello Grin

I haven't posted on mumsnet for years and never in the beauty section so this is all new for me!

I have fine, long hair and a lot of it. Used to be curly (loose big curls) and basically could wash and go - just adding some product and straightening it a bit at the front) (why oh why didn't I appreciate my hair then?!!!). Now after three babies and all the hormone changes etc and probably age too, my hair is crazy, frizzy and more wavy (don't mind waves instead of curls though) and nothing seems to help so have decided to try the Curly Girl method. Waiting for my book to arrive now!

Wondering what silicone-free products (particularly styling products) you use if you have similar hair type to me. Would you recommend them? I know there have been some threads on this but all the ones I found are a few years old and thought there might be some new products about now.

Thank you!

I used to do this and then stopped. I alternate between straight and curly.

I don't know if I was doing it properly but L'Oreal had a shampoo that had no sulphates in it, i will try and link to it now in a second, and I used that sometimes, and the rest of the time I used conditioner with lemon juice to 'wash' my hair. I told the hairdresser about it and he nearly keeled over backwards in horror so sometimes people involved in the sale of shampoos, conditioners, serums etc, you can expect them to 'poo' the idea. ha ha.

I guess I was half poo rather than no poo.

EaudeChl0e · 24/08/2013 18:54

I used to use L'Oreal new "Ever sleek" no sulphates smoothing hair care system.

It says in small writing at the bottom 'controls frizz no silicone'

PurpleBucket · 25/08/2013 14:24

Thank you! I'll have a look at those l'oreal ones.

Why did you stop using the no 'poo method?

Wow! That's fantastic jetjungle - thank you!

I saw the boots curl cream and was wondering as it looks cheap and hate paying loads for a product and it turning out to be rubbish.

Do you have any particular favourites? Because my hair is quite fine, I do have to be careful not to use products which are too heavy or greasy.

I use Umberto Giannini Curl Friends Scrunching Jelly and Boots pink curl creme (in tiny amounts). BTW You can get Umberto Giannini in a tiny tube from Boots, so you can give it a try and see how you get on with it.

nocarsgo · 25/08/2013 19:08

Reading with interest. Pre-pregnancy, my hair was straight, but pregnancy sent it crazy and it's now wavy. I just don't know what to do with it! I'd love to accentuate the waves, rather than the frizzy mess it is now.

PurpleBucket · 29/08/2013 22:50

My curly girl book arrived today and I followed it exactly for wavy hair and got lots of compliments when out tonight. Trouble is that I didn't think my hair looked as good as other people thought!!!! Perhaps I just need to get used to it. Definitely not as frizzy though and much less work.

Hi JetJungle!

Just wondering what hair type you have. I want to try the umberto giannini but will have to order on line as live overseas and the people who reviewed it seem to have thick hair. As mine is fine, wondering if perhaps it wouldn't be as good for me.

Thank you!!

I bought the boots pink curl creme and it's fab. I have curly/wavy fine chin length hair.
I'm really impressed with it..my hair looks good for 2 days using this stuff. It gets too greasy at the roots to ever last longer than 2 days.

LakeFlyPie · 16/11/2013 12:38

I find best way to use Boots curl cream is to rub a tiny blob vigorously between your palms and then scrunch the resulting white paste into very wet hair. I sometimes add a dash of UG curly gel stuff into the mix if I want a bit more definition.
I do think the key is applying product to really wet hair. I sometimes put a microfibre turban on for a while if it's still dripping wet after scrunching in product.
I thought the John Frieda stuff was laden with silicones?

Scarletohello · 16/11/2013 12:45

Hi I went to a hairdresser who specialises in curly hair this week and he recommended the Body Shop Rainforest shampoo and conditioner as there are no sulphates or silicones in them.

Patilla · 16/11/2013 12:48

I was going to say the same about the frizz ease mousse. I've been after a mousse as its the only thing that means I don't have to wash my hair each day.

I've been scouring the Internet looking for a cg friendly mousse with no success

PurpleBucket · 16/11/2013 13:46

Thanks for all the replies and info!

Yes my hair is definitely best if I put the product into soaking wet hair but the problem is that it takes AGES to dry....

I live overseas so think I will have to order the boots stuff online. Impressed by the price and that it really seems to work.

Yes I also thought frizz ease products had loads of silicone. Never did think the frizz ease serum was much good. They had a nice finishing spray but that definitely had silicone.

We do have a body shop here though so can get the shampoo you said Scarlett. Thanks!

Did the curly-expert hairdresser have any other good tips?

Scarletohello · 16/11/2013 14:18

Why not try leave in conditioner? Bumble and Bumble do one without silicones. Not cheap tho!

Scarletohello · 16/11/2013 14:21

This is the link to the thread I wrote earlier about the curly girl hairdresser...

HTH

PurpleBucket · 16/11/2013 15:46

Thank you Scarlet! Will def have a good read of that (just can't right now as the DCs are all over me.....Grin).

I have ordered the boots pink curl cream, the umberto scrunching jelly and another (cheap) gel so looking forward to those arriving!!

I had thought about leave-in conditioner but it tends to make my hair heavy. Will try these new products and if I still need something more then I'll try the leave-in.

Just read your thread Scarlett. The guy sounds amazing. Wish I could get him to cut my hair!!
