Dress for 4 year old to wear to a funeral

I need help finding a really special dress for dd to wear to my Dads funeral. She wants sparkles (obviously) and I want subtle. I've tried I Love Gorgeous, but there's not much in her size, nothing interesting in Boden, J Lewis etc - where else can I try?

Hi
Whilst I understand your wanting subtle, for such a little one, I'd go with something smart and pretty....

My DD was about 6 at my DF's funeral, and she wore a cream dream with a red rose design and a simple cardigan .... She knew it was a sombre occasion and was a bit tearful but she looked lovely and wore her "special dress" many more times too....

Nobody expects DC to be in black etc

Really sorry for your loss. Debenhams often have nice dresses?

MooseyMoo · 21/08/2013 14:53

How about Autograph at M&S. here's a sweet pink dress

Sorry for your loss

The best dress for a small girl to wear at a grandparent's funeral is, IMO, one which reminds people of the joy of the next generation. One which your dad would have liked seeing her in.

GrimmaTheNome · 21/08/2013 14:58

Oh, monsoon might have something - they aren't all sparkly, we had a lovely one for a wedding in quite a subtle print when DD was small.

MarianForrester · 21/08/2013 15:02

Could this be both?

Lots of nice ones in Zara.

Onesleeptillwembley · 21/08/2013 15:02

There's no right or wrong here. Would your Dad have liked to see her in sparkles? If so, let her dress up to say goodbye to her Granddad.
Maybe I'm too far at the other end of the scale - at my fathers funeral we had four superheroes and a female pirate. My great nephew is autistic, he was at that time almost living in a spiderman outfit (hello sil on here). So everyone just said to let the littlies wear whatever they chose, and it was nice as he loved to play daft games with them. And we all had a smile at them.

HandMini · 21/08/2013 15:09

I would avoid black or even navy or anything too somber - it's (IMO) too adult for a small girl. I would just go with her favourite colour / favourite print.

HootShoot · 21/08/2013 15:10

I'm so sorry to hear about your dad. This one is sparkly but smart also

monsoon

more subtle

spotty

PrettyFlyForAWifi · 21/08/2013 15:14

I should probably clarify - she's leaning towards neon hello kitty tulle and glitter. I'm more inclined towards chiffon and the odd sequin :)
He used to buy her some beautiful dresses and she is super girly so I'm wanting something special.

Oh, and she's got unusual colouring - auburn/gold hair and very pale skin, brown eyes

Sorry to hear about your dad.

Have a look in the party section on he monsoon website, there is one called elizabeth which is a grey/purple colour with sequins, it is sparkly enough to meet your dd's requirements without a hint of neon or hello kitty!

Spirael · 21/08/2013 15:24

I had this issue recently for DD (3 YO) attending my grandmother's funeral. In the end she wore a black, school uniform, pinafore dress (easy to acquire at the moment) with a white shirt and black sparkly shoes. Pretty, but suitably sombre.

Might be too sombre for some, but in my case it was appropriate as my DGM had been a teacher. :)

Thanks all

This one might work

Also this one but is it a bit bridesmaidy?

I like the Elizabeth one but she's too pale for the mauve.
And maybe this for over the dress, in white or cream

hmm, I think they are all very bridesmaidy, and also a bit old? (but I dress DD very 'young', I'm gathering, so maybe not!). I think the second one HootShoot linked to is good.

GrimmaTheNome · 21/08/2013 15:43

He used to buy her some beautiful dresses

If any of those still fit, I'd use one of those. A dress bought by granddad would be the most 'special' I could imagine. Smile

MollyBerry · 21/08/2013 15:44

The first one is lovely

OldRoan · 21/08/2013 15:46

Baker by Ted Baker at Debenhams have some nice dresses - this may be a bad shade of pink (and too puffy?) but I think this pleated chiffon is very sweet.

PrettyFlyForAWifi · 21/08/2013 18:27

I'm going to see if I can squeeze her into any of the frocks he bought her but she's really shot up this summer. I'm going to take her to Monsoon tomorrow and try some on - also Zara (depending how patient she can be!)

The next challenge is for me...I'll be 32 weeks pregnant on the day. No idea what I can wear, I'll be massive :(
